**Talk Abstracts:**
**Beyond the Alert: Scaling Incident Response with Elastic, PagerDuty, and MCP**
In this session, we will dive into the next generation of the Elastic and PagerDuty integration. Discover how to leverage Model Context Protocol (MCP) and advanced automation workflows to ingest telemetry, contextualize alerts, and trigger automated remediations. Learn how to reduce MTTR and eliminate alert fatigue, turning your incident management framework into a scalable operation.
****
**Observability AI Agents - Behind the Scenes**
In the age of AI, nearly every observability platform offers some form of intelligent assistance — from automated root cause analysis and incident triage to query generation and dashboard creation. Yet for most users, these AI agents remain black boxes: powerful, but opaque.
What principles guide their design? How do they reason over telemetry data? And what if you need to customize, extend, or build agents tailored to your organization’s workflows? In this talk, we’ll peel back the curtain on observability AI agents. We’ll explore the reasoning strategies, and orchestration tools that power them. Finally, we’ll dive into how Elastic’s AgentBuilder and Workflow ecosystem enable teams to move beyond out-of-the-box automation - empowering you to shape and build the agent experience your operations demand.
**Parking:**
* The building’s parking garage is operated by Colonial Parking and is located off N. Randolph Street

IO/VMO Colorado Trail Thru-hike
This trip is a fastpack thru-hike of the Colorado Trail, starting at Waterton Canyon (near Denver) on June 29 and finishing in Durango around July 18–19 (ignore the meetup end date, meetup wouldnt allow the event to have a 3 week duration), in time for a July 20 flight from Denver. The route follows the Colorado Trail mainline end-to-end, covering approximately 486 miles across Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.
The hike is planned assuming the ongoing low-snow year forecasts and is a fast paced, UL backpacking style hike with an average moving speed of 2.5–3.0 mph, hiking from early morning to dark, with pauses only to wait out storms. Daily mileage averages 20–30 miles, with longer days in lower terrain and shorter, conservative days in exposed alpine sections. Average daily elevation gain is 4,000–4,500 feet, with multiple days above 12,000 feet and a maximum elevation near 13,100 feet in the San Juan Mountains.
Resupply is intentionally minimal to maintain momentum. Planned resupply stops are Breckenridge, Twin Lakes (quick stop), Monarch Pass, Molas campground and Lake City, with overnights in Breckenridge, Lake City, and Durango.
Camping is primarily on trail, below treeline and well off high passes, with conservative camp placement during lightning-prone periods. The final stretch from Lake City to Durango (~125 miles) is treated as a single committed push with no intermediate town stops.
No permits are required anywhere along the route; however, standard wilderness regulations, LNT and seasonal fire restrictions apply. Success depends on early starts, disciplined storm management, efficient town time, and steady pacing.

Nat Geo CT north and south are recommended.

You are officially on the trip if you both RSVP on Meetup, we engage by email, text, or the app, and you meet me at the airport or trailhead. Otherwise, you are doing your own trip until you make physical contact with me and I recognize you as a co-participant.
By RSVPing to this trip or any other DC UL trip, you agree to DC UL's liability waiver terms. (https://dculbackpacking.com/about/liability-waiver)
If you are a member, don't forget to pay your annual $10 dues. You can check to see if you need to pay dues by seeing if the current year is listed next to your name in your DC UL profile. 1. Attendance: We’ve noticed that the waitlist is growing, so please make sure your name is on the Going list if you plan to play. Our number of nets is limited so this helps avoid too many rotations. If your name is on the list but you don’t show up, it will count as an absence according to Smiley Social rules. Please update your RSVP at least 12 hours in advance if your plans change.
2. Waitlist: The waitlist is not first come first serve. We prioritize regular attendees, and will fill empty spots with new faces closer to the event date.
3. Injuries: Play safely and be mindful of others on the court. Respect positions and avoid risky moves that could lead to injury. If you’re not sure the ball is yours, call it before going for it to avoid collisions.
4. Game Rules: Let’s follow the basic volleyball rules, especially the three-touch rule so we can play properly and improve as a team!

The Completely Series
These meetings will be a building block approach to learning photographic mastery over three disciplines:
Mechanical Mastery (MM) - 13 weeks of the series
Exposure Mastery (EM) - 26 weeks of the series
Composition Mastery (CM) - A 52 week series
All three series will run concurrently and will dovetail as follows:
Q3/26 - MM (Iter 1), EM (Iter 1, Pt 1), CM (Iter 1, Pt1)
Q4/26 - MM (Iter 2), EM (Iter 1, Pt 2), CM (Iter 1, Pt2)
Q1/27 - MM (Iter 3), EM (Iter 2, Pt 1), CM (Iter 1, Pt3)
Q2/27 - MM (Iter 4), EM (Iter 2, Pt 2), CM (Iter 1, Pt4)
That's likely confusing, but essentially, MM offered 4 times in that period, EM offered 2 times, and CM offered 1 time.
**TO BE CLEAR - THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THESE CLASSES.**
This is an aggressive series, with presentations, homework, group shoots to be added in, likely at LEAST twice a month, image critiques, and an expectation that you are willing to put in the work to elevate your photography significantly. Open to all levels and all equipment levels. Don't let hesitation about your skillset and/or gear keep you from a one-time opportunity.
The group will meet every Monday, with periodic exceptions, and we will try to keep as close as possible to the original plan. Obviously, more data to come, and will be published as this is further developed, but now is the time to decide if you want to be a part of this.
Stop Guessing: How to Measure and Improve LLM Outputs
Most people use LLMs by feel: ask a question, read the answer, decide whether it “seems good,” and move on.
That works for casual use. It does not work when you are building software, automating workflows, writing important documents, or relying on AI for anything that needs to be repeatable.
In this talk, we’ll look at how to improve and evaluate the inputs and outputs of LLMs using practical measurement techniques. We’ll cover how prompt changes affect results, how to compare outputs, how to build simple evaluation sets, and how math-based methods like similarity scoring can help you move beyond guesswork.
This will be beginner-friendly, so even if you don't know anything about AI, you should get something out of it. However, this will be a little more technical than our intro talks. You do not need to be an AI researcher, but programmers and technically curious attendees will get a lot out of it.
We’ll cover:
* Why “it looks good” is not enough
* How to improve prompts by changing the input, context, and constraints
* How to compare LLM outputs more systematically
* Basic evaluation techniques for accuracy, consistency, and usefulness
* How embeddings, cosine similarity, and scoring can help evaluate results
* Where automated evaluation works — and where humans still need to stay in the loop
By the end, you’ll have a practical mental model for treating LLMs less like magic and more like systems you can test, measure, and improve.
LOGISTICS AND PARKING:
The talk starts at 7:00 PM. The first half hour is reserved for everyone to get set up and mingle. Free pizza and drinks!
The cheapest parking option is to find street parking, which will only cost you a few bucks. Otherwise, park in the nearby veteran's museum lot for $8. It's highly recommended you avoid the nearby $15 garage parking.
