Data products are not a new concept. For years, organisations have talked about treating data as a product โ with clear ownership, well-defined interfaces, and measurable business value. And yet, many teams continue to struggle with fragmented dashboards, inconsistent metrics, and slow, reactive delivery.
So why is this still so difficult?
In this meetup, weโll unpack why data products remain hard in practice โ not because teams lack tools or frameworks, but because meaning, ownership, and operating models are often misunderstood or only partially implemented.
Through in-depth practitioner talks and discussion, weโll explore:
* Why data initiatives often slip back into project mode
* Where ownership breaks down across domains and platforms
* How weak semantics and unclear definitions erode trust
* What changes when data products are treated as long-lived products rather than delivery artefacts
* Why AI and advanced analytics amplify these challenges instead of solving them
The conversation is grounded in real delivery experience across engineering, architecture, and data strategy. It also features insights from Amy Raygadaโs newly released book, which captures lessons learned from years of hands-on work helping organisations move from intent to execution.
Expect practical perspectives, honest trade-offs, and an open discussion โ not hype, not vendor pitches, and no one-size-fits-all answers.
**About the speakers**
**Amy Raygada**
Principal Data & AI Strategist at Thoughtworks \| Author
Amy Raygada is a Principal Data & AI Strategist at Thoughtworks, with over a decade of experience helping organisations design and govern data products that deliver real business impact. Her work spans data product strategy, governance, operating models, and AI readiness, with a strong focus on aligning technical capabilities with decision-making.
This meetup marks the release of her new book on Data Products, bringing together lessons from years of real-world delivery across industries.
**Kiran Prakash**
Director, Data & AI at Thoughtworks
Kiran Prakash is a Director in the Data & AI service line at Thoughtworks, working with organisations to design and scale data-driven systems. In his talk *โWhat We Talk About When We Talk About Data Products,โ* Kiran presents a practical approach to designing, implementing, and governing data products. Drawing on real-world experience, he clarifies what data products are โ and what they are not โ and explores how teams can work backwards from use cases, apply adaptable implementation patterns, and use governance mechanisms such as fitness functions to keep data products aligned over time.
**Carsten Fritsch**
Principal Data Engineer at Thoughtworks
Carsten Fritsch is a Principal Data Engineer at Thoughtworks in Berlin, with deep experience in data engineering, analytics architecture, and data modelling at scale. His work focuses on semantic layers, shared metrics, and the practical challenges of operationalising meaning across organisations. Carsten brings a grounded perspective on why semantics are foundational to trustworthy data products โ especially as organisations move toward AI-driven use cases.

Co-Working Session (Deep Work, all types of work welcome)
Hello! Iโm organising a coworking + socialising session for all of us who are working on projects (e.g. our own creations, freelance or remote work) but don't feel like sitting alone at home. ๐
To ensure that we have time for both socialising AND working, we will be using the so-called โPomodoroโ technique:
**50 mins deep work** (silent), followed by **10 mins break** to socialise. And then repeat!
You are welcome to join whatever your personal background is, and whatever project you are working on.
I (the host) speak English and German, so either language is fine.
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ-
AGENDA:
* **Short Intro**
Tell us who you are and share something about what you will be working on today
* **Pomodoro Session** \- 3x \(3h\)
Each Pomodoro session consists of 50 mins focused โdeep workโ (no talking, no interruptions, **phones on silent mode**)
-> then 10 mins break: a chance to share your progress with others
-> Repeat
* **15 mins Wrap Up**
Celebrate what you achieved and get to know others ๐
โโโโ
The location is **Espresso House near Checkpoint Charlie** (they have multiple outlets - so be sure to go to the correct one!)
Wifi + power plugs are available - but best to bring a fully charged laptop, just in case ๐
You **do not** have to pay anything. But since we are using the cafรฉ space, it is common courtesy to buy at least one drink (coffee costs roughly **4 Euros**).

Come make soundโcome be heard.
The new product skill is not prompting. It's taste.
**Here's what nobody tells you about the AI age in product work: it didn't solve our hardest problem. It actually made it worse.** When execution was expensive, bad ideas died naturally through friction. We couldn't explore every direction, so we got really good at being ruthless about what actually deserved to get built. But now? AI has made execution ridiculously cheap. You can write specs in minutes, spin up prototypes in hours, and often code practically writes itself. No question that you can produce 10x more output than you could before. But here's the thing: in our craft, **producing 10x more doesn't mean you're creating 10x more value.**
Most conversations about AI and product management obsess over tactics - how can you prompt better? What AI features could you ship? How can you ship faster? But the truth is that speed isn't the competitive advantage in our industry anymore. Judgment is. **The product builders who'll define the next decade aren't the ones generating more output or ideas - they're the ones who can stand in front of infinite plausible options and point to the one that matters.**
Join us on February 5th as Akash Kedia takes a fresh look at what AI really changes in product work. Building is indeed easier than ever, which means judgment matters more than ever, too. When everything is fast, bad decisions ship just as easily as good ones. If you've felt the discomfort of infinite options but zero clarity, and you're ready to think harder about what good judgment actually looks like, this one's for you!
Thank you to our host **N26** for making this event possible.

music therapy (psychotherapy) sessions
**Music Therapy & Systemic Psychotherapy**
My approach integrates music therapy and systemic psychotherapy to support emotional expression, connection, and transformation.
Through sound, improvisation, and dialogue, we explore inner experiences, family dynamics, and relational patterns in a safe and creative space.
The sessions invite awareness, playfulness, and presence โ allowing music to become both mirror and bridge between what is felt and what can be spoken.
Whether through active musicking, deep listening, or verbal reflection, the process unfolds at your own pace, weaving together body, voice, and relationships as pathways to healing and growth.

Shut Up & Write!ยฎ East Side Columbus
Join us for an hour of writing! Weโve discovered that itโs strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if itโs true for you at 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 11 at Streetlight Guild.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
**SCHEDULE:**
6:45ish - Quick introductions
7:00 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
8:00 - The End
**OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING** happens before and after the writing hour. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.

Contra dance with Big Scioty on Feb. 7 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Dan Kappus**
**Band: Trillium**
**Big Scioty Contra Dance**
**temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like youโve seen in period films such as โPride and Prejudiceโ, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. Thatโs English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like โswing your partnerโ and โdo-si-do,โ like youโve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alรก โRiverdance.โ Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THATโs Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/)
Please bring your own refillable water bottle. Snacks to share are always welcome!
