Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky
Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky
This time we'll be reading Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Here's the blurb: Red Schuhart is a stalker, one of those young rebels who are compelled, in spite of extreme danger, to venture illegally into the Zone to collect the mysterious artifacts that the alien visitors left scattered around. His life is dominated by the place and the thriving black market in the alien products. But when he and his friend Kirill go into the Zone together to pick up a “full empty,” something goes wrong. And the news he gets from his girlfriend upon his return makes it inevitable that he’ll keep going back to the Zone, again and again, until he finds the answer to all his problems. First published in 1972, *Roadside Picnic* is still widely regarded as one of the greatest science fiction novels. The book is available here: Amazon- Paperback, eBook, Audiobook: https://www.amazon.ca/Roadside-Picnic-Arkady-Strugatsky/dp/1613743416/ref=sr_1_1?crid=4CF8Z2KM9FR5&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.OkKU7AC1WfScTlwfheDPnXc6RoH27bTDKMyfAgC_JANost0NCKJUcjZqbrLEile8IathzFMmAmFe9oXiUWLxKh0sg2kayNmgEhJeLKnThaxDk_9Nmn1yHf77Bct23OqBlVzxGEpNppD1tjZHWL0s7jQ4OA2YCoqJ5wL-eUmc8we34pauk-oG5kcohPzDgi_je8CjkyuMZtBD9FL-ijN8lzwv7OthBw_4PRiTvvZPAoimmLqGW3osojbapjD2J2EwKkDSsW8nh6xzHTdnXuVZKsuwVD2Pb6_99nT4Yqhn-WU.W4eSQPh8pV3pjNwYowMlY_NWsCM75jm2_aqs1Z4WAl0&dib_tag=se&keywords=roadside+picnic&qid=1768352378&sprefix=roadside+picnic%2Caps%2C138&sr=8-1 Indigo- Paperback: https://www.indigo.ca/en-ca/roadside-picnic/9781613743416.html Kobo- eBook: https://www.kobo.com/ca/en/ebook/roadside-picnic-1?sId=a2633ff7-55e3-4248-88ad-9f7fedb4c18f&ssId=1AYtAyk0vt3KTVdGTn8zv&cPos=1 Toronto Public Library: https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM2898868&R=2898868 Toronto Public Library- eBook https://toronto.overdrive.com/media/1075415
Bigger, Better, Bolder Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa
Bigger, Better, Bolder Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa
**Welcome to Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa!** **Spring is in the air, and with it comes the promise of new beginnings, fresh energy, and the joy of connection!** As the season of renewal unfolds, we invite you to step into the rhythm of community, dance, and celebration at Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa. My objective has always been to create a different kind of social gathering—one that is open, non-judgmental, and safe. A place where you can meet people just like you, where socializing and dancing come together to help build community and tear down the walls that separate us. Here, we make new friends, feel a sense of belonging, and enjoy the calmness that comes from knowing we are in a safe and welcoming space. Many times, I have been asked, “Why host an event on Monday night?” Many people escape on the weekend and dread Mondays when they return to work. I believe that if you dance and socialize on a Monday, you infuse your week with joy and positive energy, giving your life balance and helping you face your challenges with enthusiasm and confidence. We’re also thrilled to announce that our trial of advanced Bachata lessons, which began last September, has been a resounding success! Building on this momentum, we’re excited to offer an enhanced schedule for 2026. Our dance evenings will now feature three hours of classes: one hour of beginner to intermediate Bachata, one hour of advanced Bachata, and one hour of beginner to intermediate Salsa. As always, the entrance fee remains $15 for a night of 2 lessons and social dancing. For those interested in the advanced Bachata lessons, there will be an additional $5 fee. Here’s our updated schedule: **Miss Bachata – Main Ballroom** 🕖 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm: Beginner to Intermediate Bachata Lesson (No partner required) 🕗 8:00 pm – 12:00 am: Social Dancing **Miss Salsa – Round Room** 🕖 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm: Advanced Bachata Lesson (+$5) **NEW** 🕗 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm: Beginner to Intermediate Salsa Lesson 🕘 9:00 pm – 12:00 am: Social Dancing ✨ **Additional Details:** ✔️ Free Parking ✔️ Full Bar (Free Water, Beer: $5.75) Over the past decade, organizing Latin dancing events in Mississauga has been a labor of love. Our mission has always been to foster a sense of community, proving that the connections we share are far stronger than the differences that divide us. Loneliness is a growing concern, with over half of U.S. adults and many Canadians experiencing its effects. The COVID-19 pandemic has only heightened this issue. Harvard University's long-term study on happiness, which began in 1938, highlights the detrimental impact of loneliness on health. People with strong social connections experience slower mental and physical decline and greater overall happiness compared to those who are isolated. Here are some key findings from the study: 🌿 Close ties help delay mental and physical decline more than money, fame, social class, IQ, or genetics. 🌿 Relationship satisfaction is a better predictor of aging well than cholesterol levels in middle age. 🌿 A strong sense of community improves memory function. 🌿 Loneliness can be as harmful to health as smoking or alcoholism. And there’s hope! Strengthening our relationships and supporting community initiatives can combat loneliness and build healthier, happier lives. Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa provides a wonderful opportunity to make new friends, expand your social circle, and enjoy a safe, welcoming, authentic environment. Bring your open heart and a smile, and we’ll take care of the rest. 🌸 **Cheers to a season of renewal, joy, and community!** 🌸 **Anna G.** https://www.meetup.com/LatinDanceMeetup https://www.facebook.com/groups/1871491806494168/ https://www.facebook.com/EventsByAnnaG

6% Cap Toronto 5plex – Best Deal in 20yrs (Part 2): What Almost Killed It
6% Cap Toronto 5plex – Best Deal in 20yrs (Part 2): What Almost Killed It
At our last April Meetup ([https://www.meetup.com/volition/events/313622208](https://www.meetup.com/volition/events/313622208)), we broke down what we called: **👉 “The best deal we’ve seen in Toronto in 20 years”** \~6% cap \~$11,000/month rent \~$2,500/month cashflow We didn’t finish. We stopped the presentation short. And, in fact… This is where the deal started to fall apart. **👉 We didn’t even get to the part where the real decisions had to be made.** Instead of people immediately leaving after the presentation was done: 👉 they stayed 👉 they kept asking questions 👉 and the #1 question was: **“When’s Part 2?”** **So here it is – Dead Reckoning: Part 2** (In true Mission Impossible style…) **No clean path forward. Just decisions under pressure.** If Part 1 was identifying the problem… **Part 2 is where we had to execute.** Where we left off: * Power of Sale (seller = lender, not owner) * No protections (Schedule C overrides) * Open permits with real risk * Legally a duplex… not a 5plex * Potential $250K HST exposure **Most investors would walk away here. But we didn’t.** In Part 2, we go into what happened next: * Financing starts to break down * The deal has to be restructured under pressure * Assignment is used to keep control * Appraisal isn’t ready… but a decision still has to be made * The buyer is forced to consider going firm without full certainty At multiple points, this could have: * collapsed entirely * failed financing at the last minute * or left the buyer exposed to problems they couldn’t unwind **This wasn’t a clean process.** It was a series of decisions made under pressure – where getting it wrong could have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. **And most of what mattered… wasn’t obvious.** **This is the part most people never see.** We aren’t talking about the numbers. We’re talking about: 👉 The decisions 👉 The pressure 👉 The execution when things aren’t clean We had to figure out how to move forward – without exposing the buyer to unnecessary risk. **Why this matters:** Most people don’t lose money on obvious bad deals. They lose money when: **“Something feels off… and they don’t know how to navigate it”** The biggest risks aren’t always the ones that look scary – they’re the ones people assume are fine. If you’re actively investing – or planning to – this is the part you need to understand. **You’ll leave with a very different lens on how to evaluate – and execute – deals like this.** Part 1 was about: 👉 Identifying risk Part 2 is about: 👉 What to do when everything starts breaking **Bottom line:** Anyone can analyze a deal. **Very few know how to execute when it gets messy.** We didn’t get through this last time – and we’re picking up exactly where the real execution began. **👉 Come see how this actually played out – and how deals like this get done in the real world.** **Note:** If you came to Part 1 – this is the continuation. If you didn’t – you can still attend… we will be doing a short recap of Part 1. **👉 Just know: this is where the real execution begins.** *** **Schedule:** **Monday, May 25, 2026, 6:00-9:00 pm** * 6:00 pm - 6:30 pm: Check-in and Networking (remember that your network is your net worth!) * 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm: Presentations from the Volition team **Location:** Suite#803, 105 Gordon Baker Road, North York, ON, M2H 3P8. On this day the Christ stands before God as the representative of humanity, the “eldest in a great family of brothers,” and focalises the united aspiration of humanity into an invocative demand for more Light and Love. Through Christ, the response of deity pours forth into humanity, uplifting human consciousness and establishing a culture of goodwill and right human relations on earth. The Gemini path is one of bridge-building: learning to hold opposing poles in creative tension until duality resolves into unity. **Communication, the Messenger, and the Mind** Ruled by Mercury, Gemini governs the mind, language, and the transmission of ideas. Mercury in the Ageless Wisdom is the divine Messenger — the intermediary through which soul impression reaches the personality. **The Will-to-Good and Right Human Relations** At the Festival of Goodwill, Gemini becomes the vessel through which Love-Wisdom flows into the world as the will-to-good — active, intelligent love expressing itself through right relationship between all peoples and nations. *** ## **Planetary Rulers** **Exoteric Ruler: Mercury ☿ —** The divine Messenger, governing the lower mind as a responsive instrument for soul impression — the very faculty the disciple uses to build the bridge between higher and lower. **Esoteric Ruler: Venus ♀ —** At the soul level, Venus illumines the deeper truth of Gemini's duality: that the two poles are complementary aspects of one Life drawn together through love-wisdom. **Hierarchical Ruler: Earth 🜨︎ -** At the highest level of initiation, Earth as ruler points to Gemini's intimate relationship with planetary service — the work of bringing spiritual reality into tangible manifestation. *** ### **Positive Qualities** Capacity for Synthesis and Bridging Versatility and Adaptability Brilliant Communication and Teaching Love-Wisdom in Relationship Capacity to Hold Duality in Balance ### **Negative Qualities** Restlessness and Inconsistency Superficiality and Dispersion of Energy Duality Without Resolution Intellectual Cleverness Without Depth Gossip and Misuse of the Word *** ## \~ The Labour of Hercules \~ ## The Gathering of the Golden Apples of the Hesperides Hercules is sent to gather the golden apples of wisdom from the garden of the Hesperides — but no one will tell him where the garden is. He wanders through the world asking for directions, falling into traps and distractions. One of the traps is the most Geminian of all: a false teacher named Busiris who captures him through the very gift of eloquence and the promise of wisdom. This is the shadow side of Mercury — the power of the word turned away from the soul, used to bind rather than to liberate. The Gemini disciple must learn to discriminate between the voice of the true teacher and the voice of glamour. Eventually freed, Hercules makes his way north — the direction of spirit — and there encounters Atlas, who bears the weight of the world upon his shoulders. In an act of pure service, Hercules takes on that burden so that Atlas may retrieve the apples. This, too, is a Gemini teaching: that wisdom is not won through seeking alone, but through the willingness to bear the world's burden — to step outside the personal quest and serve. The apples come not to the one who grasps, but to the one who gives. This labour teaches the Gemini disciple that wisdom cannot be seized or hoarded — it must be lived in relationship. The golden apples represent the fruits of the spirit, the gifts of the soul, available only when the personal self steps aside and the soul is free to express through all encounters and exchanges. True communication is not the transmission of information but the transmission of light — and the Gemini initiate learns that every relationship is an opportunity for this sacred exchange. ABCD Reads AND Watches "Train Dreams"
ABCD Reads AND Watches "Train Dreams"
[[RESULTS](https://opavote.com/results/4829900303499264) of the poll for this event] ABCD Reads AND Watches "**Train Dreams**", a [novella](https://tpl.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S234C2792355) written by Denis Johnson, and a [film](https://www.justwatch.com/ca/movie/train-dreams) directed by Clint Bentley. **:: ABOUT THE BOOK ::** "Suffused with the history and landscapes of the American West—its otherworldly flora and fauna, its rugged loggers and bridge builders—this extraordinary novella poignantly captures the disappearance of a distinctly American way of life. Train Dreams tells the story of Robert Grainer, a day laborer in the American West at the start of the twentieth century—an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Buffeted by the loss of his family, Grainer struggles to make sense of this strange new world. As his story unfolds, we witness both his shocking personal defeats and the radical changes that transform America in his lifetime." (from [Goodreads](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12991188-train-dreams)) **:: ABOUT THE MOVIE ::** "Train Dreams is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier (Golden Globe-nominee Joel Edgerton), whose life unfolds during an era of unprecedented change in early 20th century America. Orphaned at a young age, Robert grows into adulthood among the towering forests of the Pacific Northwest, where he helps expand the nation's railroad empire alongside men as unforgettable as the landscapes they inhabit. After a tender courtship, he marries Gladys (Academy Award-nominee Felicity Jones) and they build a home together, though his work often takes him far from her and their young daughter. When his life takes an unexpected turn, Robert finds beauty, brutality and newfound meaning for the forests and trees he has felled." (from [Rotten Tomatoes](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/train_dreams)) **:: ABOUT THE EVENT ::** Instead of just reading the book as usual, this time we're asking that you also watch the movie adaptation. During our discussion, we'll explore the strengths of both the book and the movie, evaluate the adaptation's effectiveness, and touch on any other topics that arise. You are welcome to arrive 30 minutes before the event and stay 30 minutes or longer afterward to connect with other attendees outside the book talk. Please ensure you have read the book and watched the movie before attending (though finishing either is not a barrier to participating, as long as you don't mind spoilers). First-time attendees can join for free. If the event is full, we maintain an unofficial waitlist. Please send [Michael](https://www.meetup.com/members/55295192/) a direct message for more information, in either case. We request a $3 contribution from regular attendees to help cover our monthly meetup costs. **:: ABOUT OUR NEXT READ&WATCH ::** At the end of each event, we will ask for nominees for our next Read & Watch (date TBA). If you have a good pairing in mind, please ensure that the book is between 200-400 pages long, available from the Toronto Public Library, and counts as contemporary literary fiction (though these are not hard and fast rules), and that the movie or TV-series is readily available. When enough nominees are collected, Michael will send the members a direct message with a link where you can vote.

[In-person] Curiosity Café – Work and Identity
[In-person] Curiosity Café – Work and Identity
The average Canadian who is working a full time, paid job spends 1,750 hours a year working – almost one-third of their waking hours. With so much of our time spent doing paid and unpaid labour, it’s difficult not to identify ourselves by the very thing that we spend much of our time doing. We often ask children “What do you want to be when you grow up?" and adults "What do you do?" at dinner parties, as a way to get to know others. The unspoken expectation is for that answer to be about work and professional occupations rather than other aspects of our lives. We regularly make assumptions about who a person is based on their answers to those questions: the argumentative lawyer, the boring accountant, the patient pre-school teacher. Work and identity conflate in our day-to-day lives. But what does it mean to work? Is the value of work dependent on its utility, or is it possible to truly enjoy what we do just for the sake of doing it? Can we live a full and happy life while also working a job we don't connect with in an emotional or spiritual way? How does work conflict with our personal values or make us question who we are? Are you the same person when you're working as you are when you’re at home or with friends? Put another way, are we "bringing our whole selves to work" or do we find value in holding some of ourselves back? Join returning guest moderator Minami Alguire and our very own Sophia Whicher, at our next Curiosity Café where we will explore the dynamics between work and self. **Space is limited!** **Please obtain a “Pay-What-You-Can” ticket from Curiosity Café at [this link (click here)](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/curiosity-cafe-revisited-work-and-identity-tickets-1989183990864) to attend this event. You need a ticket to be admitted.** See the above link for more info about tickets and other options including a limited number of free tickets. Come and hang out with us, grab food, and read through our handout from 6-6:30pm. Our structured discussion will run from 6:30-8:30pm with a 10 minute break in the middle. Hope to see you there! ***__________________________________________________________________*** This event is brought to you by [Being and Becoming](https://beingnbecoming.org/), a Toronto based non-profit. We aim to create community around exploring everyday concepts and experiences so that we may live more intentional, thoughtful, and meaningful lives. We use philosophy as a tool with which we can come to a richer understanding of the world around us. By offering activities, spaces, and other opportunities for conversation and co-exploration, we hope to enable the meeting and fusion of individuals and their ideas. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background: indeed, we believe the journey is best undertaken alongside explorers from a variety of disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. Find out more about Being and Becoming [here](https://beingnbecoming.org/). About the Curiosity Café Series: For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to join us at our Curiosity Cafés and are wondering what they’re all about: every two weeks, we invite members of our community to come out to the Madison Avenue Pub to engage in a collaborative exploration of our chosen topic. Through these events, we aim to build our community of people who like to think deeply about life’s big questions, and provide each other with some philosophical tools to dig deeper into whatever it is we are most curious about.

🏡🌿 THE BRIDLE PATH (DRAKE’S MANSION) & EDWARDS GARDENS WALK 🌿🏡
🏡🌿 **THE BRIDLE PATH (DRAKE’S MANSION) & EDWARDS GARDENS WALK** 🌿🏡 Luxury Streets, Hidden Trails & A Garden Escape Some parts of Toronto feel like a completely different world — and this walk takes you right through them. Join us for a social walk through The Bridle Path, one of the most exclusive and wealthiest neighbourhoods in the city — known for its massive estates, gated homes, and quiet, tree-lined streets. This is where celebrities and icons have lived, including Drake and the late Gordon Lightfoot. It’s the kind of area where the houses don’t just impress — they *shock*. From there, we’ll shift into nature and make our way toward Edwards Gardens, where things slow down with flowers, pathways, and a peaceful break in the middle of the walk. This is not a formal tour. Judgement of Paris - House Wine
Judgement of Paris - House Wine
This is the 50th Anniversary of the Judgment of Paris. Significantly, in 1976, California wines unexpectedly outperformed French wines in a blind tasting with nine French judges, challenging the perception that only French wines were of the highest quality. This event helped elevate the status of California wines on the global stage and is considered a pivotal moment in wine history. House Wine, in Worthington, modestly, recreates that moment in history with a tasting both American and French wines in a fun, casual atmosphere. Come at 6:45, pay your fee at the register and join your friends for this "Judgey" tasting. https://www.wineenthusiast.com/culture/wine/the-judgment-of-paris-turns-40/ Arrive when you can and we'll have a table for gathering. Feel free to bring your own food as it is welcomed at this local gem or order from the newly opened Worthington Inn, or local favorites such as Dewey's, Everest, Jet, Worthington Tavern and The Whitney. Each person pays their tasting fee, typically $15, and gets their wine glass, then approximately five pours of the wines being served. **Parking is tough**. Try the second lot behind House Wine accessed by the land by the back parking lot or the municipal lot one block north of House Wine. **Waiver and Liability and Attendance Policy.** Participation by you and your guests means you agree to the Waiver of Liability and Attendance Policies on our Group Page. People who have two more or Attendance policy violations are subject to removal from the group.
