Abyssinian Lullaby feat. St. Michael’s day | Lalibela, Ethiopia
Abyssinian Lullaby feat. St. Michael’s day | Lalibela, Ethiopia
**Lalibela is located in the heart of Abyssinian Highlands**, on the side of mountain range culminating at 4284 mtrs. Its 2500 meter altitude provides a climate with daily temperatures 20-15C. The world recognized glory of the city comes from the **churches curved in monolithic rocks, concept similar to Petra or Ellora** gained Lalibela a spot not only on UNESCO World Heritage list but also on many travel connoisseurs bucket lists. We will discover this 7th or perhaps 8th world's wonder over an extended weekend trip. [https://vimeo.com/297861237](https://vimeo.com/297861237) [https://vimeo.com/329506645](https://vimeo.com/329506645) Although date of churches creation is speculated to be around **12th to 13th century**, it has been widely attributed to King Lalibela 24 years' project, at the time when city was called Roha. The legend says the King was born surrounded by the bees, and it became the sign of his future reign. The name also relates to this event – Lalibela origin in ancient Amharic means **“The one who eats honey”**. Its only **in 1950s when the first road** to Lalibela was finally constructed and so the former dwellings started being replaced with houses and corrugated iron sheet roofs. Until then it took forty to fifty hours on mule to reach the city. With **8 rock hewn churches and 2 rock hewn palaces** Lalibela contains a number of courts, tunnels, pools and was significant achievement of architecture of its times. City quickly became political and religious center, putting Aksum, capitol city on secondary position. Moreover, due to its remote location it is only Lalibela who survived religious wars ravaging Ethiopia over centuries, other places including Aksum were completely destroyed. No wonder the presence of churches is considered as holy protection to the northern Abyssinian plateaus. Our plan is to visit this soaked with history UNESCO site but also spend some time outside to stretch the legs. We ll take the opportunity to see St. Michael’s day, which makes Lalibela a vibrant place and observe very unique celebrations. **Commemorating the anniversary of the pass away of Saint-King Lalibela**, St Michael’s day is filled with white-robed pilgrims and high priests surrounding the churches in procession. Even the **Ark of the Covenant** is removed from it’s hiding place and carried through the cobble-stone streets, although it’s carefully covered in red to prevent anyone from looking at it directly, according to Old Testament tradition, and of course **we know from Indiana Jones what happens if you do!** **Lets go!!** **DAY 1** Meeting at Dubai Terminal 1 for a flight to Addis and connecting flight to Lalibela. Check in to our comfy lodge, lunch. Spend rest of the day discovering 3 church complexes: the most famous group of George, Royal and Ecclesiastical. In the evening we will witness night mass and pilgrims watch, part of St. Michael's celebration. **DAY 2** Early wake up call to observe St. Michael's processions. After hearty breakfast, we will start the day with the hike to Ashetom Maryam - a church hidden on a cliff with spectacular 360 degree view of the city. Visit to open market and the township, continue to churches for yet another spectacular discoveries. **DAY 3** Continue to discover treasures of Lalibela, drive to yet another spooky location - church carved into a natural cave and surrounded by rugged mountain scenery. Inside, we will discover a dimly lit sanctuary where holy water continuously drips from the cave ceiling into stone basins, believed by pilgrims to possess healing powers. Monastery is also famous for its collection of ancient treasures, including crafted processional crosses, centuries old icons, manuscripts, and ceremonial artifacts. **DAY 4** Free time at leisure, souvenir shopping. Flight to Addis and quick look at bustling metropolis, visit Lucy and further fly back home. **Level:** Easy- two short but steep in places hikes. Available for beginners. **Activities:** sightseeing, trekking, celebrations. **Accommodation & meals** \- all included: comfortable ROCK HEWN lodge \(sharing rooms\)\. **Single room / upgrades** to traditional TUKUL subject of availability at the time of booking. **Cost:** **2980 AED** excluding flights, **6820 AED** all inclusive of flights, Cost valid until **JUNE 14.** Past this date please inquire about cost and availability. **Specifically excluded:** visas, all kind of entry or photography fees or other tips, meals and entry fees in Addis, if any. Barbecue at Doors to Hell | Journey Across Turkmenistan
Barbecue at Doors to Hell | Journey Across Turkmenistan
[https://vimeo.com/183429568](https://vimeo.com/183429568) **Most mysterious and the least explored of Central Asia \~stans**, this country has been difficult to approach for a long time. Bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north and east, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south and southwest, and the Caspian Sea to the west. **Turkmenistan has been at the crossroads of civilizations for centuries**. In medieval times, Merv was one of the great cities of the Islamic world and an important stop on the Silk Road, a caravan route used for trade with China until the mid-15th century. Annexed by the Russian Empire in 1881, Turkmenistan later figured prominently in the anti-Bolshevik movement in Central Asia. In 1924, Turkmenistan became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic **became independent in 1991**. The country became famous for the dictatorship of Saparmyrat Niyazov, who ruled as ‘**Turkmenbashi**’ (‘leader of the Turkmen’) until his death in 2006. He covered this desert republic with golden statues of himself and monuments to the achievements of his ‘golden age’. **The full Turkmen experience** is ultimately about mingling with the warm and fascinating Turkmen people themselves, whose hospitality is legendary. **Ashgabat is a capital designed at the cost of billions of dollars showing off the world glory and accomplishments of the Turkmen**. A thoroughly artificial collection of white marble buildings across a long, dry valley. At sunrise or sunset, there's a beauty to this uniform, resembling more of a science-fiction film than actual human settlement. **Visit to the Köw Ata Underground Lake is a unique experience**. You ll enter a cave at the base of a mountain and walk down a staircase, **65m underground**, which takes you into a wonderfully sulphurous subterranean world. At the bottom awaits a superb lake of clear water naturally heated to about 36°C where you can have a dip. **Turkmenistan doors to hell…** The village of Darvaza is centrally located in Turkmenistan, its 350 tribal residents braving the inhospitable conditions of the desert for hundreds of years. Nothing could interrupt the peaceful and quiet lifestyle of the nomadic tribe, aside from sitting on a valuable cache of natural resources. Initial estimations of the site’s reserves were extremely low; when the soviet scientists lit the gas, it erupted and **never stopped burning. Over forty years later locals call it the Doors to Hell.** **Lets go!** **DAY 0 :: JUNE 17 // Departure** Meeting on JUNE 17th at 22:00 at Terminal 2 for a flight on JUNE 18th at 00:10. **DAY 1 :: JUNE 18 // Ashgabat** Arrival, immigration procedure, check in and short rest. Foreign passport registration procedure. Quick look at majestic statues of Ashgabat and few other landmarks of the city, including Tolkuchka Sunday Market, largest in Turkmenistan. Dinner and overnight in your lavish hotel Turkmen style! **DAY 2 :: JUNE 19 // Ashgabat – Nohur** In the morning departure to Kopet Dag, aka “hilly mountains” towards Nokhur village. Return towards Ashgabat, swim at volcanic **underground lake of Kow-Ata.** Come back to sci-fi scenery and indulge into neon lit up streets with white marble decorations. Check up on local nightlife. **DAY 3 :: JUNE 20 // Darvaza** Morning souvenir shopping. After local lunch, departure to Darvaza. On the way stop at two other craters with water and sulfur mud, both seeping with gas from the underground. In the evening **"A little party never killed nobody" themed barbecue** dinner near the main crater. Unforgettable sunset over the gas burning spectacle (camping). **DAY 4 :: JUNE 21 // Ashgabat** In the morning return to Ashgabat, refresh in the hotel and lunch. Afternoon tour of parks and remaining sites of Ashgabat, that will still surprise you with forms and decoration styles. Overnight in the hotel. **DAY 5 :: JUNE 22 // Departure** Early morning transfer to the airport for return flight to Dubai. Back home at 7am. **Activities:** trekking, swimming, sightseeing, getting amazed with burning gas crater! **Accommodation & meals:** 4 star hotel double sharing + 1 night camping, local meals included. **Cost: 7,980 AED all incl. flights and visa pre-approval.** **Cost valid** **until MAY 18th. Past this date cost will change.** **Visa:** payable on arrival, approx. 100 USD. In case of pre-approval denial, processing fee of 50 USD is deductible. **RSVP:** To reassure enough time for visa processing and eventual re-applying in case of denial, we recommend to join this trip within 30 days before travel date. Standard cancellation policy applies for anyone joining later. ⎡An artist of the Floating World⎦Book Discussion over Bites & Bev
I started this group to bring together Dubai readers who enjoy Buffy’s (IG @buffys__) picks. As I will be travelling over Eid al-Adha, I won’t be able to host a discussion for Buffy’s May selection. However, a few of us had a blast at the last event and decided to read *An Artist of the Floating World* by Kazuo Ishiguro as a bonus discussion for when I return. We'll chat about the book, meet fellow readers, and just have a chill time! It’s free to join, and I’ll confirm a café once numbers are final. Just a quick note: * It's a small group. If you sign up, please do your best to attend * Try to finish the book beforehand so everyone can fully join the discussion Kazuo Ishiguro is one of my favorite authors. Can't wait to read and discuss it with you all!

Drunken Philosophy: Where Is Everybody? The Fermi Paradox and the Great Filter
Drunken Philosophy: Where Is Everybody? The Fermi Paradox and the Great Filter
Welcome to Drunken Philosophy, a casual, curious, social discussion club. Come grab a drink and a seat at The Oracle. **Optional topic for this meetup: Where is everybody?** In 1950 the physicist Enrico Fermi was talking about aliens over lunch and asked a question that still has not gone away: if the universe is so vast and so old, and even a fraction of those billions of stars have planets, where is everyone? By the numbers the galaxy should be crowded with civilizations. Instead we look up and hear silence. That gap between "they should be everywhere" and "we see no one" is the Fermi Paradox. One of the most unsettling answers is the idea of a **Great Filter**: somewhere on the road from dead chemistry to a galaxy-spanning civilization, there is at least one step that is almost impossible to get past. Maybe the filter is behind us. Maybe life starting at all, or simple cells becoming complex, or intelligence ever evolving, is the freak accident, and we already cleared the hard part. Or maybe the filter is ahead of us, and advanced civilizations reliably wipe themselves out before they spread. Here is the part that messes with people. If we ever found life somewhere else, even pond scum on Mars, most people would call it the greatest discovery in history. But it might be the worst possible news. It would mean life is common, the early steps are easy, and the hard step is still in front of us. So the eerie silence overhead might actually be the best sign we could ask for. **Questions to wrestle with:** * Is it better to be alone? Would you rather we find alien life and learn we are not special, or find nothing and quietly improve our odds of surviving? * Where do you bet the filter sits, behind us or ahead of us, and why? * If it is ahead of us, what is it? Nuclear war, climate collapse, AI, something we cannot even picture yet? And can we do anything about a filter we cannot see coming? * Does any of this change how you live, or how humanity should be spending its time and money right now? As always the prompt is optional. Come for the conversation, stay for the drinks, and bring your own questions.
