Algorithmic Racism: De-coding Bias in A.I. Facial Recognition Technology
Algorithmic Racism: De-coding Bias in A.I. Facial Recognition Technology
Facial recognition technology (FRT) is increasingly deployed across both public and private sectors – from policing, immigration, and administrative enforcement to loss-prevention in the retail industry – under claims of efficiency, objectivity, and technological neutrality. This presentation challenges those claims by advancing the concept of algorithmic racism: the structural embedding of racial hierarchy into ostensibly neutral algorithmic systems through biased data, design choices, institutional incentives, and opaque deployment practices. Drawing on documented wrongful arrests in the United States, Federal Court litigation in Canada involving refugee-status revocations, and the growing use of FRT in commercial settings, the presentation demonstrates how FRT disproportionately misidentifies Black individuals, particularly Black women. The presentation situates the well-documented racial bias in FRT within a longer historical arc, arguing that contemporary FRT mirrors the exclusionary logic of the Jim Crow era – reproducing systemic racial hierarchy through ostensibly neutral technological systems. Framed as a modern continuation of past forms of racialized control, FRT operates not through explicit racial classification but through code, data, and automated decision-making. The presentation contends that, absent robust legal safeguards, transparency, and meaningful accountability, the deployment of facial recognition technologies risks entrenching algorithmic racism across both state and market institutions, underscoring the need for urgent regulatory intervention. Gideon Christian https://profiles.ucalgary.ca/gideon-christian Associate Professor Faculty of Law University of Calgary About the Speaker: My primary research interest is specifically in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI) and law, and generally in law and technology. My research work sheds light on the intersection of AI and law, from identifying and addressing legal issues arising from the adoption of new and emerging technologies in the justice system to identifying and addressing issues relating to racial bias in AI systems. **\* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \*** This is a talk with audience Q&A presented by the University of Toronto's Centre for Ethics that is free to attend and open to the public. 🎬Movie: Crime 101 - Food & Drinks after the movie 🍿!
🎬 Let’s Go to the Movies (and Actually Talk… or Not) Whether you're a film nerd, popcorn enthusiast, or just looking for a chill night out with interesting people — this one's for you. We’re heading out to see a movie together, then grabbing food or drinks after. If the film's great (or terrible), we’ll probably talk about it forever. If it’s just okay, we’ll talk about it for 10 minutes and move on to everything else — books, dating apps, weird dreams, how Toronto keeps getting more expensive, etc. The vibe is relaxed, friendly, and not too serious. No film degree needed. No icebreakers. No pressure to “perform.” Just come enjoy the film, connect with some thoughtful people, and see where the night goes Click here to watch trailer! 🎞️ **Movie Title + Trailer:** [[Click here to watch trailer!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5y-cziwmMw)] 📖 **📖 Plot Summary:** Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, CRIME 101 weaves the tale of an elusive thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose high-stakes heists unfolding along the iconic 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime with hopes of this being his final job, his path collides with a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads, forcing the two to collaborate. Determined to crack the case, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) closes in on the operation, raising the stakes even higher. As the multimillion-dollar heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are forced to confront the cost of their choices–and the realization that there's no turning back. *** ### 🗓️ **Event Details** 📍 **Meetup Time:** 6:30 PM - I will only wait 5mins 🎬 **Movie Start Time:** 6:40pm ⏱️ **Runtime:** 2hrs12mins 📌 **Meetup Spot:** To be confirmed (based on theatre) 🎟️ **Cost:** I will be standing at the top of the escalator wearing my Moose Hat. * **$11.50** for *CineClub* members * **$16.00** regular admission 👉 You are responsible for buying your own ticket. **🪑 Reserved Seating:** I will be in ROW "J" SEAT "14" You must buy your ticket *before* signing up. Come in and get lost in the PATH (12 km)
Come in and get lost in the PATH (12 km)
**Attendance policy is enforced for this hike**. See below for details. Escape the Canadian winter by ducking into the PATH. One of the longest underground retail spaces in the world, the PATH is great for indoor walks, if you don't mind getting disoriented in its maze. This hike covers all major paths in the PATH and almost all minor ones. It's completely indoors, so there's no need for winter gear. The route is filled with sights as it goes through malls, office buildings, sporting venues, municipal buildings, theatres, and more. Unfortunately for foodies, there isn't a lot of great food inside the PATH. And most businesses are closed on weekends and at night. Nevertheless, we'll highlight the best of the lot so that you know where to go to the next time you find yourself underground. New for this year's hike: * Cluck'N Bowl * Jacobs and Co * Las Muns * Grandma Loves You **Highlights** 1. Miku (depart 1:30pm) 2. One York 3. Infinity condos 4. CIBC Square 5. Union Station: % Arabica (depart 2:15pm) 6. Skywalk to CN Tower 7. Royal Bank Plaza 8. Brookfield Place 9. Commerce Court 10. TD Centre / Design Exchange 11. TD Gallery of Indigenous Art (depart 3:20pm) 12. Metro Hall 13. Roy Thomson Hall 14. First Canadian Place 15. Bay-Adelaide Centre food court (depart 4:35pm) 16. Toronto Stock Exchange 17. Richmond-Adelaide Centre 18. Eaton Centre 19. Atrium on Bay 20. Some stairs. **How it works** Hike starts punctually. Late or can't do the whole route? Meet us at scheduled checkpoints. We'll browse many food places but won't linger long. See the route in advance, organize takeout, then pickup along the way. Not sure what to try? Join our omakase for $5, which gives a sample from different restaurants. Payment on the day of event by cash or e-transfer to globaltorontoeats@gmail.com. No refunds after orders are placed. Details of sampled food will be uploaded after the hike. Limited cutlery provided. Highly recommended to bring cutlery and containers for omakase and bringing back leftovers. If you can't keep up and get lost in the PATH, we'll probably never see you again. See our [About section](https://www.meetup.com/hike-to-eat/) to understand why we don't wait for people going below the target speed and what else to expect. **Attendance policy** Please check in with an organizer when you attend. 24 hours before the hike, we'll check who is on the confirmed list. Those that don't show up will be flagged. Repeat offenders will be banned. Please change your RSVP if you can no longer attend. If you made it off the waitlist less than 24 hours before the event, you won't be considered a no-show.

Work commenced in 1799 on Danforth's Road a hundred-mile route from Scarborough to the Trent River, and completed in 1801, but soon was replaced by the 1817 Kingston Road stagecoach route. Most early maps of Toronto referred to Danforth as a Concession Line Road. Originally Danforth Avenue connected Toronto to Danforth Road. It was built by the Don and Danforth Road Company in 1851 to Broadview Avenue, and Kingston Road. Danforth is home to Toronto's Greek community, known as Greektown or as it was once known - Little Athens.
