Creative Writing Budapest
Creative Writing Budapest
**This week's venue: Beer People \| LĂĄzĂĄr utca 7\, Budapest 1065** We hold a bi-weekly workshop to encourage creative writing where we share pieces of creative writing and solicit feedback from the other attendees. Some members also use the forum to find others with whom to collaborate, edit work, and/or brainstorm plot, themes, settings, and so forth. And from time to time, we participate in competitions, recite and/or offer material for events organized by other groups. At the moment there is no prompt for this particular meetup. Instead, writers are invited to submit something they have (or are working on) or to craft a short story specifically for the event. Of course, there's no pressure to submit something. Many participants are interested in hearing ideas, questioning the authors, and examining style and technique. Often, we explore other published works as well. The submission guidelines are as follows: 1. limit the piece to 850 words (to give enough time for any other submissions being read at the event); 2. make the text available (though you can read it aloud) for the other attendees. Many authors bring a few printed copies, but one can also pre-post the item on [bpcw.slack.com](http://bpcw.slack.com) in the "_NextMeetup" channel (write me at eahofer (at) gmail if you aren't a member already); 3. have a question in mind for the group about the submission; and, 4. If offering something from a longer work, be prepared to give a little bit of background first.

A Night With
Apollo & Artemis : Exploring the Myth and Its Echoes
A Night With
Apollo & Artemis : Exploring the Myth and Its Echoes
Join us for the first session of our new discussion series **“A Night With
”**, where we dive into timeless myths and their universal messages. This evening is dedicated to **Apollo & Artemis**, the divine twins, born from Zeus, king of the gods, and Leto, a Titaness. They share a strong sibling connection and often act together in myths, such as punishing those who insult their mother or aiding mortals who honour them, however they embody opposite entities and forces. * **Artemis:** Goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and protector of young women. She is often associated with chastity and the moon. * **Apollo:** God of music, prophecy, healing, and the sun. He became associated with harmony, reason, and the arts. **What to expect:** * I will open the meetup with a short introduction to Apollo & Artemis’s myth and share a few possible interpretations and connections. * After that, the floor is yours! Bring your thoughts, reflections, and any links you see between this myth and other domains, e.g. literature, art, philosophy, psychology, history or even your own creative work. * If you’re an artist and your work resonates with the divine twins' story, feel free to share it with the group. **Before the event:** Take 5 minutes to read the quick snippet of Apollo & Artemis’s myth (provided belowđŸ‘‡đŸœ) and think of: * A book, artwork, or personal reflection that relates to her story. * Any modern parallels or insights you’d like to discuss. This is a space for **open dialogue, creativity, and shared exploration**. ### **đŸ«§Apollo & Artemis’ Myth in Brief** Apollo and Artemis, twin children of Zeus and Leto, were born on the island of Delos after Hera forbade Leto to give birth on solid land. Artemis arrived first and helped deliver Apollo. Apollo became god of music, prophecy, healing, and the sun, while Artemis ruled over the hunt, wilderness, and the moon. Together they symbolise harmony and balance: masculine and feminine, sun and moon. Fiercely protective of their mother, **they killed Niobe’s children** for mocking Leto and slew the giant Tityos for attacking her. Their bond also led to tragedy when **Apollo tricked Artemis into killing Orion**. United in justice and divine power, they embody strength, loyalty, and the duality of nature. *** ### **đŸ•”đŸœâ€â™€ïžMain Sources in Greek-Roman Literature** * **Homer,** ***Hymn to Apollo*** and ***Hymn to Artemis*:** describe their birth and divine roles. * **Homer**, ***Iliad*** and ***Odyssey*:** mention their attributes and actions in passing. * **Hesiod, *Theogony***: genealogical details about their parentage. * **Callimachus, *Hymn to Artemis***: focuses on Artemis’ character and myths. * **Apollodorus, *Library (Bibliotheca)***: episodes of Niobe and Tityos. * **Ovid, *Metamorphoses***: Niobe’s punishment and Orion’s death. * **Pindar, *Odes*** : occasional references to Apollo’s sanctuaries and Artemis’ role. * **Pausanias, *Description of Greece*:** Provides local cult traditions and myths.

Agenda: **5:00 PM EST**: Online and in-person meeting begins with a social hour. This is an unstructured hour where you can join us to catch up and meet other group members before the session starts. There will be food brought in for in-person attendees. **6:00 PM EST**: Updates and announcements, followed by our feature presentation. See below for presentation details. **7:30 PM EST**: Optionally after the main presentations, the in-person crowd may go out for snacks and drinks at a local establishment. We hope to see you there! Session Abstract **Data on Fire: A Hands-On Intro to Spark in Fabric** Curious about Apache Spark but not sure where to start? This hands-on session introduces you to Spark in Microsoft Fabric Notebooks—a powerful and accessible way to process and analyze big data using familiar tools in the Microsoft ecosystem. We’ll break down key Spark concepts like distributed computing, DataFrames, and lazy evaluation, then show how they come to life inside Fabric’s notebook experience. You’ll see practical demos that cover loading, transforming, and analyzing large datasets—while leveraging Fabric’s modern data stack, including OneLake, Dataflows, and Pipelines. You’ll also learn how to choose between Spark and pure Python notebooks in Fabric, based on execution needs, data integration, and use case fit. Whether you're a SQL pro, BI developer, or data engineer, this session will give you the tools and confidence to start using Spark in your own projects—no cluster management required. \*Please note, that we will be using Microsoft Teams for the online portion of this meeting. You may want to join a few minutes early to ensure you do not have any issues. If you are attending in person, there are large TVs at the office, and you do not need to bring a laptop or use Teams.

Ms. Tregar is the co-author with John de Lancie (the actor who portrayed the character Q on Star Trek next generation) of a radio play depicting the events surrounding the Kitzmiller v. The trial decided the issue of some of the Dover school district board members attempting to insert creationism disguised as "intelligent design" into the 9th grade biology curriculum. She will discuss the trial and the process of writing the play. (Bob Leonhard has seen the play and it is riveting and tense). Ms. Tregar's bio is below: Kristen Tregar is a dramaturg, director, playwright, and theatre teacher. She earned her Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre from the UC San Diego and UC Irvine joint program. In addition, she has a MS in Forensic Science from City University of New York- John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a MA in Educational Theatre from New York University- Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. In 2013, in collaboration with Irish colleagues, she founded *The Ireland Project*, an intercontinental devised theatre work with high school students in New York and Tallaght, Ireland. Her original short story "Far From Here" was recently published in *Stay Awhile Longer: More Scenes From Temecula Valley*. She has two rescued dogs (Kira and Harry) and she rides, competes, and foxhunts with her horses, Andromache and Baker Street Irregular. Food and drinks will be provided at the event.
