The Blazing World: A New History of Revolutionary England, 1603-1689
Join us over food and drinks to discuss the book, āThe Blazing World: A New History of Revolutionary England, 1603-1689.ā
Description of book:
**The seventeenth century was a revolutionary age for the English. It started as they suddenly found themselves ruled by a Scotsman, and it ended in the shadow of an invasion by the Dutch. Under James I, England suffered terrorism and witch panics. Under his son Charles, state and society collapsed into civil war, to be followed by an army coup and regicide. For a short timeāfor the only time in historyāEngland was a republic. There were bitter struggles over faith and Parliament asserted itself like never before. There were no boundaries to politics. In fiery, plague-ridden London, in coffee shops and alehouses, new ideas were forged that were angry, populist, and almost impossible for monarchs to control. But the story of this century is less well known than it should be. Myths have grown around key figures. People may know about the Gunpowder Plot and the Great Fire of London, but the Civil War is a half-remembered mystery to many. And yet the seventeenth century has never seemed more relevant. The British constitution is once again being bent and contorted, and there is a clash of ideologies reminiscent of when Roundhead fought Cavalier. The Blazing World is the story of this strange, twisting, fascinating century. It shows a society in sparkling detail. It was a new world of wealth, creativity, and daring curiosity, but also of greed, pugnacious arrogance, and colonial violence.**

Weekly Meet Up Friendship Brunch for non-Religious Progressives.
We are meeting at a restaurant this week. Near Anderson Mill and 183.
We have been meeting weekly for 4 years. We meet in Cedar Park or Leander every Sunday and sometimes get together mid-week. We are progressive, non-religious people. Attendance is about 6-10. We generally discuss what is going on in our lives, not as much religion and politics. Most of us deal with religious and conservative folks all week so this is OUR space to be OURSELVES. There are other atheist groups that discuss religion, some discuss politics and some forbid it. If you think our group fits you, text301-213-9533. Location hidden until then.

Living Waters Fly Fishing103 North Brown StreetRound Rock, TX, 78664United States (map)
We are excited to host an event years in the making: A Brushy Creek Watershed Protection Plan Meeting!
A Watershed Protection Plan (WPP) is a voluntary, community-driven framework designed to improve water quality in a specific watershed by identifying pollution sources, establishing goals, and outlining management strategies. It brings together stakeholdersāsuch as anglers, landowners, and community membersāto create a science-based, actionable plan that protects local waterways.
At this meeting, guest speaker Sarah Stannard, Program Specialist with Texas Water Resources Institute, will share updates on watershed conditions and local projects. Attendees are encouraged to provide feedback and discussion on priorities and the development of the watershed protection plan.
As part of the fly fishing community, your input is critical to guide future watershed conservation initiatives for Brushy Creek!

Sunday Brunch
Sleep in on Sundays. When you've had your fill of pajama-time, roll out and have some tasty brunch with your fellow Humanists!
Drunken
This month's prompt concerns the idea of the āwarrior philosopherā (seemed appropriate in these times)--that is someone whose understanding of violence, power, and justice is forged through direct experience of war. We are looking at Major General Smedley D. Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine raised in a Quaker (pacifist) tradition who later became a prominent critic of American militarism (there is a wonderful biography of Gen. Butler called "Gangsters of Capitalism")
Butler's argument in *War Is a Racket* (1935): that many U.S. interventions were driven less by national defense than by corporate and financial interests, with Butler portraying himself as an enforcer for business and Wall Street. We can consider the moral ambiguity of his insider critiqueāwhether complicity strengthens or undermines credibility and also consider some of the concrete reforms he proposed (e.g., āconscriptā capital before soldiers, restrict the military to coastal defense, and have only those who fight decide on war).
Butlerās life arc clearly changed from pacifist upbringing to warrior to antiwar crusaderāand asks whether true understanding of peace requires firsthand knowledge of war, and what that implies about the cost of suffering. So do we need to suffer to understand suffering? Do we have to experience war to appreciate peace? As one more question: in the movie "A Few Good Men" Jack Nicholson's character says that "you have the luxury of not knowing what I know" so do most of us go through life oblivious to real violence and suffering? See you at Drunken Philosophy!
