!!NEW LOCATION!! Datamonster Berlin - Janek Fellien: Projekt Drasi
... english version below
Liebe Datamonster und Freunde des gepflegten Datenstroms.
Alles neu macht 2026...
Markus & Ben

Dear data monsters and friends of well-crafted data streams,
Everything is new in 2026… and we’re starting the new year with a bang: from now on, we have a **new location**!
Our friends at b.telligent have kindly connected us with **Berlin Bytes**, who will be welcoming us from now on at their office in the Backfabrik in Prenzlauer Berg.
And of course, the first event at the new location calls for an outstanding speaker—and we’ve found one in Janek Fellien. His topic is the Drasi project.
Project Drasi is a very new open-source project from Microsoft that revisits the idea of Complex Event Processing. At its core, it is about detecting data changes in software systems and being able to react to them accordingly. In newly developed systems, this would typically be implemented using event sourcing or technical solutions built “from scratch.” But what about existing systems? How can changes be captured there—and, more importantly, why would you want to react to them?
In this talk, I want to demonstrate how Drasi can be used to embed or transform a monolithic legacy system into a microservices system.
You can join online via the following [link](https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/34859473575613?p=dZmKkYBDnMGEltFDhK), but of course we warmly recommend that you celebrate the inauguration of the new location for the Berlin Data Monsters with us in person.
Looking forward to it,
Markus & Ben

Talk & Play #54
**RSVP via Meetup is mandatory to attend the event, due to limited capacity.**
Talk & Play is a free event that provides the opportunity to game enthusiasts, players and makers to meet in a friendly, relaxed and safe environment. Everybody's welcome, regardless of their background and knowledge level: if you've got any interest in games, we'll make sure you have a good time! This is NOT an event only aimed at developers.
The event series is funded by [Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg](https://www.medienboard.de/) and sponsored by [Happy Broccoli](https://www.happybroccoligames.com/), the Berlin indie game studio behind the Duck Detective series. A huge thank you to both for their support!
• • • • •
**HOW IT WORKS**
The event is made of 2 parts:
* TALK: Game-related presentations + announcements from the community
* PLAY: All participants are welcome to exhibit projects they've made
• • • • •
**AGENDA**
* **18:30** Doors open, project showcase starts
* **19:30 to 20:30** Talks & community announcements
* **22:00** Event ends
• • • • •
**THE TALK PART (PRESENTATIONS)**
**Sebastian Möring: Precarious Pixels. Artistic Computer Game Photographs as Media of Care**
Many artistic computer game photographs address the presence and absence of care. I would like to show in this talk that they themselves become describable as media of care. The notion of care offers a possibility to view the multitude of artistic in-game photographic works through the lens of one theme and thereby bring them into a coherent context.
*Sebastian Möring is a professor of game design at Macromedia University and a media and culture scholar with a PhD in game studies focusing on game aesthetics and philosophy, in-game photography, and green game studies.*
[sebastianmoering.com](https://sebastianmoering.com/) // [Macromedia University](https://www.macromedia-fachhochschule.de/de/menschen/sebastian-moering/)
After the talk(s) there will be a section dedicated to short announcements from the community, get in touch to reserve a spot: info@berlingamescene.com — same goes if your company is hiring or wants to announce something and you'd like to get a sponsored slot!

**ADDITIONAL INFO**
Since restarting the event in 2023 we have asked attendees to wear a face mask. This requirement feels incredibly anachronistic these days so at the end of 2025 we decided to drop the requirement. That being said, **we ask everyone showing any signs of illness to be considerate and refrain from attending the event**. FFP2 masks will continue to be available at the door and we support anyone who feels like wearing one to protect themselves and others 💜
Are you attending the event for the first time, or are you coming on your own? The Talk & Play Ambassadors will be there to assist and answers any questions you have.

**💡 Speaker & Workshop Details:**
Olena Kutsenko, Staff Developer Advocate, Confluent
**Hands-on workshop: real-time flight data streaming, anomalies, predictions, and visualizations**
**Workshop Overview**
In this hands-on session, we'll build a real-time analytics pipeline using flight data and modern streaming tools — step by step, and without hand-waving.
We'll start by streaming data into Apache Kafka using Confluent Cloud, process it with Apache Flink, and land it in Apache Iceberg using Tableflow. From there, we'll query the data with Trino and turn it into dashboards using Superset. Everything runs in a practical setup you can reproduce later, including Docker and cloud-managed services.
Along the way, we'll also look at anomaly detection and simple predictions using built-in functions, so you can see how real-time insights can be added without building custom ML pipelines or complex models.
This session is all about doing, not slides. You'll see how the pieces actually fit together, what decisions matter in practice (regions, credentials, formats), and how to go from streaming data to analytics in a way that scales.
If you're curious about real-time analytics, Kafka + Flink in the cloud, or how streaming, analytics, and lightweight predictive use cases come together in the same pipeline, this workshop will give you a clear, working mental model — and code you can take home.
No prior experience with Kafka, Flink, or Iceberg required! Just bring your curiosity and a laptop!
**Technical Prerequisites:**
To make sure you can get hands on during this workshop, please make sure the following are installed on your system (**Make sure your bring your laptops!)**
**1\. GitHub Account**
* **Zero Install (Recommended)**: Use GitHub Codespaces or open in Dev Container - everything pre-installed!
**2\. Local Setup: Install the tools below on your machine \(takes \~10 minutes\)**

* [Install DuckDB:](https://duckdb.org/docs/installation/) For querying Tableflow Iceberg tables.
**3\. Correctly setting up your Confluent Cloud account**
#####
**This step is optional, as we will go through how to set up Confluent Cloud during the event. However, if you want to get ahead, make sure you sign up, as so, to make sure you don't have to input your Credit Card:**

We’ll share the exact location of the upcoming meetup the night before only if you have bought a ticket or membership plan.
**Why this works:**
\* Smaller groups make real conversations easier.
\* Discover new restaurants in your city, together.
\* Curated lunch venues with good food and vibe.
\* If you hit it off with your group, there’s plenty of time to hang out afterwards.
**Note:**
RSVPs on Meetup don’t reflect total attendance. Many attendees register directly via our website. The event on [Meetup.com](http://meetup.com/) is only a placeholder.
This meetup is organized by Groupvibe, a small team passionate about helping people form meaningful friendships offline.

**Abstract**
*Spec-Driven Development with GitHub Spec-Kit: From Intent to Implementation*
Spec-driven development flips the traditional workflow on its head: instead of code being the source of truth, the specification becomes the backbone of design, collaboration, and delivery. In this session, we’ll explore how GitHub Spec-Kit enables teams to treat specifications as first-class artifacts—living documents that drive architecture, implementation, and verification.
You’ll learn how Spec-Kit helps teams clearly express intent using structured, version-controlled specs that live alongside code. We’ll walk through a practical workflow that starts with defining system behavior and constraints, then progressively refines those specs into testable, automatable outcomes. Along the way, we’ll show how specs can reduce ambiguity, improve cross-functional collaboration, and make design decisions explicit before a single line of production code is written.
This talk will cover:
--What spec-driven development is (and what it isn’t)
--How GitHub Spec-Kit fits into modern developer workflows
--Using specs to align product, engineering, and AI-assisted development
--Real-world examples of turning specs into implementations with confidence
Whether you’re building greenfield systems, integrating AI into your stack, or trying to reduce costly rework, spec-driven development offers a scalable way to move faster without sacrificing clarity. Attendees will leave with concrete patterns and a clear mental model for adopting GitHub Spec-Kit in their own projects.

Wine Tasting - Newcomers Night
This is "***New Members Night***." If you are one of the many folks on the fence about coming to your first wine tasting with the *Hilliard Wine Club*, this is the night to come. There will be many other new people, so you won't be alone. And the regulars will be there to help make you feel welcome. We're a relaxed and warm group. We hope to see you.
**SIDE NOTE:** New members are welcome to ALL our Friday night wine tastings, but this night is a special overture to those who don't want to feel that they are the only new person in the room. Don't worry. You won't be. And don't hesitate to RSVP to other events.
**OLD MEMBERS NOTE**: Hey Old Members! You're not excluded from this event. We expect to see you there to help make the new members feel welcome.
**Sample 4 different wines** this Friday for $15 (*Cash or Venmo only please*). Glasses are provided. Bring a snack to share. Bring a bottle to share if you care to. See all the details below for the Hilliard Wine Club Wine Tasting. In Person. In Real Life. Actual Wine from glass bottles with corks and everything.
**Wine**: Tastings will be $15 for four samples as always. And you are welcome to bring a bottle of your favorite wine to share with others. Participation in the wine tastings is optional. But since you’re going, I will buy enough wine to cover you. If you bring your own wine and do not participate in the tasting you will only pay $10 to cover the door charge.
**Parking**: There are several public parking lots near the Alive614 hall. Please be careful to NOT park in private parking lots. They do tow. Check Google maps to scope out your space. Anyone who is early could easily find a parking space on the street nearby.
**Glasses**: …will be provided. Please note that after the wine tasting, the glasses need to be returned to the boxes at the service table. Please be gentle, our glasses are fragile. Uh, they are made of glass!
**Food**: You are welcome to bring a snack to share. It is not required. Most people do though. If no one brings anything, there will be nothing.
**Code of Conduct**: Though mostly understood, it’s still worth mentioning. We don’t have rules per se, but we highly discourage the following topics of discussion because they are likely to incite anti-social responses - Sex, Politics, Religion. Please don’t mistake this as an attempt to limit your free speech rights but rather a guide to a place and time for appropriate discussions.
**Extra Wine**: After everyone has had their samples, we remove the pouring spouts and any remaining wine is poured freely to whomever wants it. I hate having leftover wine.
**Queen of Hearts**: The Queen of Hearts raffle is a fundraiser for the club and a Barnum and Bailey type extravaganza - minus the dancing ponies, clowns, and actual circus. Bring your ***cash*** as the Queen does not accept American Express or other plastic.
**After the lights go out**: After the last sip of wine, when we clean up and turn the lights out, if you still haven’t had enough of us, it is typical for a group to get together and go to a local eatery for food and/or drinks or coffee.
Again, We look forward to meeting new members and reuniting with old friends.
Sincerely, ***Paul Uttermohlen***,
**Red 1 Realty**
