Workshop; The Mysteries of Consciousness and the search for depth
This is a ticketed event and purchases can be made [here via eventbrite. ](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/workshop-the-mysteries-of-consciousness-and-the-search-for-depth-tickets-1983730926602?aff=oddtdtcreator&_gl=1%2A3hpw60%2A_up%2AMQ..%2A_ga%2AMjQ5MDU0MjgzLjE3NzE3OTgwNDc.%2A_ga_TQVES5V6SH%2AczE3NzE3OTgwNDYkbzEkZzAkdDE3NzE3OTgwNDYkajYwJGwwJGgw)
*Where our capacity to measure is limited, philosophy can help us to approach mystery and the unknown.*
‘What is consciousness?’ is perhaps the greatest anomaly of science but moving closer to understanding this and searching for greater depth in life has always been the goal of the philosophers. Where our capacity to quantify and measure is limited, philosophy can help us to approach mystery and harmonise our relationship with the unknown, acting as a bridge between different aspects of ourselves and of our reality. This workshop will consist of three parts with some practical exercises.
**Part 1: Consciousness** **and Science** \- an overview of ‘consciousness anomalies’ considering ways to dialogue more openly and about what we don’t understand\.
**Part 2: Life on Many Levels** \- from the Celts to the Egyptians\, life was traditionally considered to exist on many levels both visible and invisible\. Using symbol and philosophy we will explore and how we might better relate to different levels of life\.
**Part 3: Seeing** **and Experiencing** \- Neoplatonist philosophers presented a simple structure for entering more deeply into reality which we will learn and practice during the session\, with further suggestions for deepening our experience of life and expanding consciousness\.
London Society BOOKSHOP CRAWL - Bloomsbury

Philosophy in the Park 134 (in The Barbican)
Philosophy in the Park is a philosophical discussion group. Open to all. No previous philosophical experience necessary.
We will meet in the Barbican Centre on Level Minus 1. Outside The Hall.
Here's how it works:
* At the start of each hour vote on which questions to discuss. You can vote for more than one question if you'd like. The questions with the most votes are the questions we discuss.
* We then break up into groups and each group does a different question. The question is just a starting point and it's cool if you go on tangents and up end talking about different things. You're welcome to join in and participate or if you'd prefer you're welcome to sit back and enjoy the conversation.
After an hour we all come back together, take a quick break and then repeat all over again. So in 3 hours we go around 3 times.
The aim is to have fun, meet new people, generate interesting and thought-provoking conversations, have your horizons expanded, challenge your preconceptions and who knows - you might even learn something?
In order to make the conversations as fun, interesting and productive for everyone as possible please follow these simple guidelines:
1. Keep it Philosophical
(No Science, no History, no Evolutionary Psychology, no contestable facts, personal anecdotes etc).
2. Think for Yourself
(No phones, no looking up definitions, no name dropping Philosophers / books you've read).
3. Tangents are Cool
(Don't worry too much if the subject drifts and you don't answer the question).
4. Keep it Succinct
(Like this).
5. Be Excellent to Each Other
(But of course).
Philosophy is about conceptual analysis. It's thinking about thinking. It's not about empiricism or the real world. It's about abstractions, concepts and ideas.
To terms of the right attitude: It's not about debating and trying to win - it's about listening to people and working collaboratively to increase our collective understanding.
No homework or prior knowledge or reading is necessary - simply come and enjoy the discussions.
After the event finishes we have an area reserved in The Shakespeare pub which is just around the corner from the Barbican. You are very welcome to join us if you'd like.
If you would like to submit a question please join the Whatsapp group. Question submissions take place on the Thursday before the meeting.
We hope to see you there.
Nice one.

Book Club Meeting - Spirituality Before Religions by Prof Kaba Hiawatha Kamen
**Association of Black Humanists Book Club Meeting**
We are delighted to invite members to our next Book Club gathering, where we’ll be discussing ***Spirituality Before Religions: Unseen Science and Seen Spirituality*** by **Prof. Kaba Hiawatha Kamene**.
This book challenges us to explore African-centred understandings of spirituality, science, consciousness, and human meaning. It’s a powerful invitation to interrogate what spirituality can look like outside dogma—and what it has meant for Black people historically and today. As Black humanists, this conversation sits right at the intersection of culture, reason, history, and liberation. Expect a rich, respectful discussion, critical reflection, and space for diverse perspectives.
The book confronts one of the most enduring legacies of colonial domination: the erasure and distortion of African knowledge systems. Long before imposed religions, our ancestors engaged deeply with science, consciousness, spirituality, and the natural world—without dogma, without fear, and without submission.

The Mental Health Zoo🦧🦌
'A sane person to an insane society must appear insane.' - Kurt Vonnegut
'Insanity is the only sane reaction to an insane society.' - Thomas Szasz
'Madness is a perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world.' - R. D. Laing
Imagine if everyone in the world except you suddenly got antisocial personality disorder or some other. Committing crimes and manipulating people became the new normal. You try to fit in but you can't help but feel bad every time you manipulate someone. How long would you last in such a world? What if people with personality disorders just have different personalities? Why is it that some people with personality disorders don't think there's anything wrong with them?
Have you been diagnosed with a personality disorder or some other mental condition?
Is everyone urging you to change even though you feel like there's nothing wrong with you and everyone else is in the wrong?
Does therapy just feel like gaslighting?
Then let's talk about the philosophy behind personality disorders.
The Art of Choosing by Sheena Iyengar
In this event, we will discuss about a science or philosophy book chosen by London Science and Philosophy Book Club. The attendees will be divided into groups and each of them will focus on a chapter in the book. This month we will discuss about a fascinating book called The Art of Choosing by Sheena Iyengar. If you haven't read the book, it's no problem. I will bring you up to speed with the discussion materials.
We will meet in a nice lounge area at 6 p.m for introductions. Please come on time so you will not miss out on valuable discussion midway. If you end up in the waitlist, feel free to show up.
Book Description:
Every day we make choices. Coke or Pepsi? Save or spend? Stay or go?
Whether mundane or life-altering, these choices define us and shape our lives. Sheena Iyengar asks the difficult questions about how and why we choose: Is the desire for choice innate or bound by culture? Why do we sometimes choose against our best interests? How much control do we really have over what we choose? Her award-winning research reveals that the answers are surprising and profound. In our world of shifting political and cultural forces, technological revolution, and interconnected commerce, our decisions have far-reaching consequences. Use this book as your companion and guide for the many challenges ahead.
Agenda:
6 p.m to 6:30 p.m: Introduction and Socializing
6:30 p.m to 9:30 p.m: Book Discussion
9:30 p.m to late night: Drinks, Dinner or Feel free to go home.
Krishnamurti Inspired Sunday Dialogue
**🌿 We meet up in a beautiful room at the Tibetan Buddhist Centre in London. The quiet venue is perhaps conducive for a deep dive inquiry and careful attention to our topics.**
Together we shall be exploring some of the themes that Krishnamurti is proposing but - more importantly - that we ourselves are facing in everyday life. This is not an intellectual or philosophical debate but a heartfelt investigation into the art of living itself.
Please feel welcome even if you are still unfamiliar with K's insights. We meet as friends and everyone collaborates in the inquiry on an equal footing. There is no group leader or teaching to be learnt or followed: *here we value listening, thinking and exploring for ourselves above all.*
**☕️ Refreshments Before the Dialogue 🥮**
We meet before the dialogue as friends or to get to know each other: do come early if you can and have a cup of tea and delicious home made cakes at the *Tibetan Buddhist Cafe* on the premises.
You can also go and sit in the little garden outside, the Meditation halls or relax in the lovely library to spend time alone or inquire more privately with a friend.
I will be present at the premises cafe for pre-dialogue meetup and refreshment together.
*(please contact me if you want to see me for a private meetup at a specific time...)*
**🌼 Contribution Price for the Dialogue**
There will be a cost of £10 per dialogue per person to cover the hiring of the room. Thank you 🙏

LCC RUNNERS: Hyde Park Foundation Session [~1km] BEGINNERS
**Welcome back to LCC's Trail Running Club! This is our beginners' session in which we'll be training from the ground up, building strength and endurance in line with the NHS-approved [Couch to 5k programme.](https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/get-active/get-running-with-couch-to-5k/)**
Beginners' training sessions are all about what's right for you, so we won't be following a fixed route or a set pace. We'll aim to do around 1km, alternatively jogging and walking, based on how we feel. Everyone is welcome no matter how little running you've done in your life so do come along and invite your friends, we'll be making sure no one gets left behind.
There are [toilet facilities in Hyde Park](https://www.royalparks.org.uk/visit/parks/hyde-park/faqs) which cost 20 pence (£0.20) to access; contactless payment cards are accepted but cash is not. If you haven't got a card but need the loo, don't worry, we got you.
I'll also be bringing plenty of water along with me, so if you forget yours, fear not. I've got a few spare bits of kit as well - if you would like a running sleeve to put your phone in or a pouch belt for keys and things, just shoot me a message on here ahead of time!
Our standard bit of info about our running group and why it's good is provided below:
\-\-\-\-\-
Humans evolved to run and sprint; no wonder then that when we do it regularly (within moderation and with plenty of rest days), our brains as well as bodies thank us. Running has recently been shown to [improve neuroplasticity,](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6148340/) heal [brain damage](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6148340/) in affected individuals, and foster [better mental health](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/the-truth-behind-runners-high-and-other-mental-benefits-of-running) including elevated mood at rest and enhanced task-switching ability. Doing all this in nature, as opposed to busy London roads dodging commuters and street cleaners, also helps deliver the well-known [benefits](https://mcpress.mayoclinic.org/mental-health/the-mental-health-benefits-of-nature-spending-time-outdoors-to-refresh-your-mind/) of time spent in nature to mood, anxiety levels, cognition and memory. All these things matter a great deal in an age where burnout and exhaustion are a constant presence either in our own lives or those of the people we care about [who you should totally invite along]. It matters especially for people trying to eke out a percentage of their time and mental capacity for transformative social and political organising: the better we feel, the more we'll be able to do.
In a nutshell, running is great for you and you should do it. Trail running is even better. Best of all is doing all this with a supportive group of comrades, especially one which includes knowledgeable folks who can provide some structure to what can be a puzzling sport to get started with if building up to something, like a 10k or half marathon, is your goal. Part of our running group's programming will be building a series of events aimed at building people up, slowly but surely, towards specific goals, using progressive programmes similar to the [NHS's Couch to 5k](https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/get-active/get-running-with-couch-to-5k/) system.
\-\-\-\-\-
Take care and see you on the trails!
LET'S PLAY: ZARNITSA Sports Megagame [It's like Russian Capture the Flag]
**Join LCC Sunday, March 8th at the Hackney Marshes playing field as we make another attempt at playing the Soviet Union's very own *Zarnitsa,* a capture-the-flag alternative with a small twist.**
**WHAT IS ZARNITSA?**
Zarnitsa (Зарница), or heat-lightning, officially known as the All-Union Young Pioneer military sports game "Zarnitsa", is a massive multi-player physical sports game developed and practiced by the Young Pioneers communist youth organisation during the Soviet era. The game provides a simulation of military actions such as reconnaissance, co-ordinated offensives, giving chase, etc. Popular once again in modern Russia, this is a simple game designed for children and young people in military/cadet organisations, but great fun for active people of all ages.
The rules of Zarnitsa are based on the classic capture the flag concept. Two teams each have a "base area" with a flag contained within, concealed or otherwise. Each team's goal is to protect their own flag and seize the other team's and bring it back to the base area. Players can walk, run, sneak, hide, create diversions and use any means short of physical violence to achieve their objectives.
What makes Zarnitsa different from classic CTF is simply this: every player has two velcro-attached shoulder straps that serve as health indicators and can be torn off by the opponents. Losing one indicates "wounded", losing two indicates "dead". The "wounded" players cannot run and should only walk. The "dead" players return to a respawn point or leave the game in some modes.
Why are we doing this? Capture the flag is simply top fun and anyone who says otherwise is joking themselves. Zarnitsa's slightly elevated level of complexity should give us just that extra challenge needed to really make it interesting. That said, this is our first go with organising multiplayer sports games, so we'll see what the results are! As always comments, questions, suggestions and concerns are more than welcome - just contact an organiser.
Sports games are a great way to get and stay active, meet new people, and break the monotony of everyday life under British capitalism. Let's get out there!
For our first attempt at organising a little Zarnitsa league here in London, we'll hit up Hackney Marshes and Wick Woodland. We'll divide into two teams; each will receive coloured vests or other garments to which the health indicator strips are attached. Then we'll take up our places, count down from 60 seconds, and let the games begin!
**Note: we'll want at least five people per team for this to really work right, so we'll cancel or reschedule if this one gets less than 9 RSVPs.** There's no limit to how big our group can be of course, so please do join us! Just be sure to either turn up on the day or change your RSVP if you can't make it in the end, just so we know what to expect.
Take care and see you on the pitch!

In-Person Event: The Answers to Depression & Anxiety
This is an in-person meeting. At this meeting you will get answers to depression and anxiety. Find out the source of them and how to get rid of them.
Did you know that unwanted emotions like anxiety, depression, unhappiness, loneliness, hopelessness, anger, fear, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not due to a chemical imbalance in your brain from some nebulous chemical reaction "by chance".
Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you.
The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life.
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life.
Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there.

Central Ohio Mens Group - Currently Accepting New Members
This is not an event, but an announcement that we are accepting new members. Bowling and Drinks
Let’s knock down some pins and knock back a few drinks while we’re at it.
Bowling is one of the best stress relievers out there, so bring your A game and let’s see what you’ve got.
It’s $20 per person, which includes free shoe rental and two hours of open bowling.
We’ll start with six people per lane. Once we have six, we’ll grab our lane and get rolling. If more people show up after that, we’ll snag the lane right next to us and keep the party going.
Come ready to have some fun.
Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association:
They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other church–state issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEA’s early wins and hard lessons, what we’re seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape — and practical ways to get involved.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
