Photo Class: Photo Basics – Getting Off Auto
THIS CLASS IS OFFERED THROUGH CAPITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER
**PRE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED**. PLEASE REGISTER WITH CAPITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER:
https://capitalphotographycenter.com/classes/class/2026-3-7-photo-basics-getting-off-auto
**This class is also offered on 3/15, 4/11, 4/26, 5/2, 5/17 & 6/13.**
Whether you want to capture cherished moments with loved ones, document game-winning action, or preserve the beauty of your travels, this beginner photography basics class provides the tools you need with hands-on practice.
Learn how YOU, not the camera, can control the ‘look’ of an image by choosing the appropriate settings. Understand which tools you can use to freeze or blur motion, and how to beautifully blur backgrounds to make your subject stand out.
This class is designed for those who want to learn more about photo basics to comfortably get off the Auto mode.
Topics Include:
* Camera Controls – Learn the most important settings that affect exposure
* ISO Settings
* Shutter Speeds – Control motion to add emphasis
* Aperture Settings – To affect the ‘Depth of Field’ (the amount of blurring in the background)
* Manual Shooting Modes
* Focus Settings – Learn how to get tack-sharp focus in your photos.
* Resolution & Compression – Set your camera to capture the best quality images
* White Balance – Capture accurate and vibrant colors
* Fill Flash
* Lenses – Understand your lens options
* Composition – Learn tips for captivating photographs
Students are encouraged to bring their cameras. As we discuss camera features and menu settings, you can follow along and learn how to adjust them. An extra battery, memory card, and your instruction manual are also very helpful to have on hand at the class.
People who like this class might also enjoy the In-the-Field-Photography classes, especially the FIELDWORK classes, as a way to reinforce the material covered in the classroom.
Appropriate for DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras with manual exposure controls.

Monuments and Memorials Photo Safari
• What we'll do
Learn how to take great pictures BEFORE you go on that expensive trip! And we will teach you how to use your camera IN THE FIELD, not in a classroom! Join our standard Monuments and Memorials workshop, offered Wednesdays and Saturdays, in which the instructor takes you to some of DC’s most popular attractions: White House, Lafayette Park, the Einstein, Lincoln, Korea, and Vietnam Three Servicemen Memorials, and finally to Union Station, where you learn to make all the moving people DISAPPEAR! Remember, it was Confucius who said: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do, and I understand." At Washington Photo Safari, we help you "do " and understand! That is why our motto is "See. Click. Learn."
This $71 Safari (a 20% discount from the regular $89 price) begins with a 45-minute travel photography orientation, giving you basic tips in composition, F-stops and shutter speeds, portraiture, and interior photography. While you are taking pictures, you receive hands-on guidance on how to make those images even better! Advanced and smartphone photographers will appreciate the instructor’s extensive knowledge of the best camera angles in DC. This is suggested as a preliminary course before taking special safaris. Open to any photographers at any skill level with any camera, phone, or tablet. Transportation from site to site is provided by the instructor.

Birding with Special Guest at the Dyke Marsh Wildlife Reserve
This Saturday I've invited Sandy F. to help co-host this event. She is an experienced birder with years of experience in finding and identifying birds in our area.
The Group gathers in the parking lot between 6:00 AM and 6:30 AM to catch the sunrise over the Potomac River.
Google Maps: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/hCUuoxUPKhRbLLZn9](https://maps.app.goo.gl/hCUuoxUPKhRbLLZn9)
Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve is known as a top regional birding spot, over **300 species** have been recorded here, including nesting bald eagles and ospreys.
Bring your longest telephoto lens and binoculars. I can help you with camera settings so you can capture sharper images of both perched birds and birds in flight.
I randomly drop by this afternoon before the snow and saw many amazing birds. I posted a few already.
Note: I set the meetup for 6:30am to capture the sunrise. It's supposed to be partly cloudy which should make for amazing skies. I suggest you arrive at 6:00 AM to capture the glow of twilight hour. It is thrilling to capture the amazing orange and red colors that are only available at that time in the morning.
Share only your very best, most interesting shots after the field trip, and keep it down to between 5 and 10 photos.
Bring water, comfortable shoes, a tripod, fully charged batteries, and empty memory cards...

MO W1: Catoctin Highlight Reel
This route takes us by many scenic landmarks in northern Maryland: Annapolis Rocks, Black Rock, Raven Rock, Cunningham Falls, Cat Rock, Chimney Rock, and Wolf Rock. The splits will be 13.75/19.75
We will meet at the Grovesnor-Strathmore kiss and ride at 7:30am, and carpool to the trailhead about an hour away, I will arrange to set up the shuttle either beforehand or on our way. We will start from the Annapolis Rocks trailhead and hike north on the AT to raven Rock shelter, stopping to see Annapolis, Black, and Raven Rocks on our way. We will settle in a Raven Rocks shelter for the night. The shelter is quite large, and there are campsites available. The next morning, we will retrace our steps back to the last road and roadwalk 2.5 miles to make the jump from the AT to the Catoctin Mountain Trail. Once there, we will hike several miles to route 77, where our cars will be, and pass them to hike the loop to Cunningham Falls, Cat Rock, Chimney Rock, Wolf Rock, and Thurmont Vista, before returning to our shuttle vehicle back near the falls. For any members who are looking to become veteran members, day two is long enough for you to graduate! Anyone looking for a shorter second day may stop at the cars when we pass on route 77, making it a less than 10 mile day.
This is a W1 trip, so be prepared for winter conditions. We will monitor the weather as it gets closer.

Hike Turkey Run Park (Easy/Moderate) – Pho Lunch
ike Turkey Run Park- Pho Lunch, VA Sunday March 8
With winter weather receding, this is a great way to fight cabin fever and head back outside with views of the Potomac. This is a 3 to 4 mile loop hike along the Potomac River just below the American Legion bridge off the GW parkway. The trail is mostly easy and flat, but there are some slightly rocky areas. Be aware that this time of year where segments along the river can be muddy and there are some rocky areas we must maneuver around.
Bring a mascot! The park is dog-friendly, but must be on a leash.

· Drones · by Benson & Busch @ Beatley Library
Many popular movies about flying machines bear the title “Drones,” but this isn’t one of them. No, this is a little-known gem about love in the workplace possibly leading to the destruction of planet Earth. Witty writing, solid acting, and slick direction all work together in this movie like bees in a hive, which coincidentally is the point of the title. The cubicle-bound employees of a vast corporation attend to their various tasks, each contributing to the productivity of the whole. But wait – is one of these workers not like the others? And if so, what is this person’s true agenda? When the answers to these questions arrive, the story gets hilariously crazy. The R rating is earned strictly by occasional rude language in this dialogue-driven production, and bluntly your host thinks PG-13 would have been sufficient.
■ Title — *Drones*
■ Director — Amber Benson, Adam Busch
■ Cast — Angela Bettis, Jonathan M. Woodward, Samm Levine
