POSTPONED-Profs & Pints DC: Wink, Nod, Kill
**This talk has been postponed to March 9th in response to a winter storm. Tickets for the March 9th staging of it are available at** [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-wink-nod-kill ](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-wink-nod-kill )**Anyone who had purchased a ticket for January 26th will be getting a refund.**
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **âWink, Nod, Kill,â** a look at implicit calls for violence and other speech that leads to bloodshed and threatens democracy, with Kurt Braddock, assistant professor of communications at American University and expert on terrorism.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/wink-nod-kill](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/wink-nod-kill) .[
Over the last decade, President Donald Trump and many of his allies have used language that implicitly advocates for the use of violence without directing it outright. From telling the Proud Boys to âstand back and stand byâ to suggesting that legal acts of Democratic lawmakers should be âpunishable by death,â Trump has consistently suggested that violence is a viable means of addressing political grievances.
Support for political violenceâimplicit or explicitâgoes beyond the sort of spirited debate and disagreement upon which the American experiment was founded. It represents a gray area in the connection between violent language and violent acts, an area that Kurt Braddock has spent years studying.
Learn about research on the connection between real bloodshed and coded language, dogwhistles, and implicit calls for violence with Dr. Braddock, who has conducted research on communication and terrorism for several national and international organizations, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of State, and the United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism.
Professor Braddock will give his audience a firm grounding in the concept of âstochastic terrorism,â or political violence spawned by vague calls to violent action. Tapping into decades of research on communication and decision-making and accounts of specific violent acts inspired by implicit orders, heâll show us that the threat posed by implicit calls to violence is real.
Heâll discuss whether implicit calls for violence represent a ânewâ form of political communication protected by the First Amendment, and heâll describe the real-world dangers posed by these kinds of statements.
Among the questions Dr. Braddock will tackle: Why do politicians use this language if they can reasonably assume that someone may be motivated by it to hurt someone else? Perhaps most importantly, what can we do about it, especially given the sacrosanctity of the First Amendment?
His talk promises to give you a much more sophisticated understanding of recent events and a clearer sense of what might lie ahead. (Door: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

This Is Not Precious: How I use Design Thinking to Create Bestselling Games
**\*This is an in-person event\***
Most people hold their ideas too tightly. They refine too early, hesitate to share half-formed concepts, and wait for âperfectâ before putting anything in front of a user. Frankie Abralind works the opposite way and that mindset is a big part of why his projects succeed.
In this session, Frankie walks you through his real creative process: messy drafts, discarded versions, surprising user reactions, and the moments when he threw out something he loved because the evidence pushed him in a new direction. Youâll see firsthand how treating ideas as *disposable, not precious* accelerates learning and leads to better outcomes.
Youâll also get to examine real artifacts from the development of his games **BrainSpin**, **DIEKY**, and **eckso**. Explore prototypes, dive into design dilemmas, and hear candid stories of iteration, failure, and breakthrough that have earned former DT:DC director Frankie Abralind a reputation as an âentrepreneur who ships.â
**What you'll learn**
⢠What you need to test an idea quickly
⢠Where to find real users (beyond friends and family)
⢠How to ask non-leading, non-biasing questions
⢠User-testing methods that uncover meaningful insights
⢠Best practices for rapid iteration
⢠How to log feedback, share modifications, and track updates
⢠How to receive feedback with openness and use it productively
⢠How to build, and reward, a network of testers and supporters
**Agenda**
**6:00pm** â Snacks & connection
**6:30pm** â Case Study 1: *BrainSpin* â finding user testers
**6:50pm** â Case Study 2: *DIEKY* â play tester appreciation
**7:10pm** â Case Study 3: *eckso* â rapid prototyping
**7:30pm** â *Zenmo* â live user testing
**8:00pm** â Debrief & questions
**8:30pm** â Adjourn
