**About the Speaker** **Simon Ritter** With over a decade of experience as Deputy CTO at Azul Systems, our speaker has helped shape the adoption of Java and JVM technologies across the global developer community. A recognized expert in Java and open source, he is passionate about advancing developer productivity, application performance, and innovation throughout the software ecosystem. **Agenda** **Keeping Your Java Hot by Solving the JVM Startup and Warmup Problem** Java bytecodes and class files deliver on the original vision of “write once, run anywhere”. Using a Just-in-Time (JIT) compiler allows JVM-based applications to compile only the code that’s used frequently and optimise it precisely for how it's used. Using techniques like speculative optimisation can often deliver better performance than static, Ahead-of-Time (AOT) compiled code. However, this flexibility and performance come at a cost. Each time the JVM starts an application, it must perform the same analysis to identify hot spots in the code and compile them. This is referred to as the application warmup time. In this session, we’ll look at several approaches to alleviating or even eliminating this problem. Specifically: · Static compilation of Java code ahead-of-time (AOT). Specifically, the Graal native image approach · Generating a JIT compiler profile of a running, warmed-up application that can be reused when the same application is restarted, eliminating the need for much of the JIT compilation. This will include details of the work of the OpenJDK Project Leyden. · Decoupling the JIT compiler from the JVM for a Cloud environment. Providing a centralised JIT-as-a-Service allows caching of compiled code and offloading the compilation work when new code must be compiled. · Creating a checkpoint of a running application. This includes all application state (heap, stack, etc.) in addition to the JIT-compiled code. Project CRaC will be used as an example. At the end of the session, you’ll be all set to keep your Java hot! **Modern Java Puzzlers** Since JDK 9, Java, as a language, has evolved faster than at any point in its 30-year history. For developers, this is great, as it means we get more new features that make our code more concise and, hopefully, easier to read and understand. All new language features also bring their quirks and possibly unseen consequences. In this fun interactive session, we’ll examine a range of recent language features and pose questions to the audience about how the code works and what it does. We’ll cover many of the new language features from recent releases, including switch expressions, sealed classes and pattern matching. We’ll even look at some curious ways special characters can be used in unexpected ways. The answers will most definitely not always be as you expect!

**For ages 13 and above.** Systema is a Russian Martial Art founded by the late Colonel Mikhail Ryabko and Vladimir Vasiliev. Systema was designed to develop individuals in a combative style which upholds the intrinsic value of all human life. This is why it is non-destructive – even of one’s enemies. Through the use of simple exercises, breathing techniques and massage work, Systema helps you to build a strong mind and body. Here is what you can expect: **Warm ups** Class begins with warming up each of the systems of the body – from the breathing, muscular and nervous system, each component needs to be properly engaged. **Thematic studies** Fetching from a huge pool of drills and sometimes even crafting specialized ones, our instructors format a logical progression of the concept being shared. Depending on the ability of the class, the drills are modified to be at the optimal level for learning, with suitable modifications given to students based on their individual performance. **Application of concepts** After the thematic studies, some time is given for the students to apply the training – the intensity is decided upon by the students under the supervision of the instructor. At times, the instructor will request for the students to push themselves, while at other times they are there to taper in the sparring to a productive level. **Cool downs** The cooldowns are usually done in a way both the help the class recover from the higher intensity application section as well as to revisit the concepts again in a calmer manner. This helps to ensure everyone is reminded of the key points. Sometimes we do a little massage. **Training circles** At the end of every training session, we circle up to share a few words about the training. DateColumbus Pickleball League **8 Weeks of Singles Pickleball - you joining us?!** Summer is calling, and we've got better plans for you than swiping right. DateColumbus's Pickleball League is back — 8 weeks of casual open play, rotating partners, new connections, and honestly? A really good time. Whether you've never held a paddle in your life or you've been playing for years, this league was built for you to show up, get moving, and meet people IRL. **Never played before? You're in the right place.** For the first three weeks, we'll have on-site instructors ready to walk you through the basics in the first 30 minutes — no experience needed, no pressure, just good vibes and a little coaching. Our volunteers are also on-site every Monday to get you settled on the courts, introduce you around, and make sure you leave with at least a few new faces in your contacts. **How it works:** We run open play — meaning you'll rotate courts AND partners throughout the night. Winners stay for one round before rotating, so there's always someone new to meet, rally with, and maybe grab a drink with after. Maximum mingling.
