Iran's Grand Strategy, by Vali Nasr
*From the [publisher's website](https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9780691268927/irans-grand-strategy):*
Iran presents one of the most significant foreign policy challenges for America and the West, yet very little is known about what the country’s goals really are. Vali Nasr examines Iran’s political history in new ways to explain its actions and ambitions on the world stage, showing how, behind the veneer of theocracy and Islamic ideology, today’s Iran is pursuing a grand strategy aimed at securing the country internally and asserting its place in the region and the world.
Drawing on memoirs, oral histories, and original in-depth interviews with Iranian decision makers, Nasr brings to light facts and events in Iran’s political history that have been overlooked until now. He traces the roots of Iran’s strategic outlook to its experiences over the past four decades of war with Iraq in the 1980s and the subsequent American containment of Iran, invasion of Iraq in 2003, and posture toward Iran thereafter. Nasr reveals how these experiences have shaped a geopolitical outlook driven by pervasive fear of America and its plans for the Middle East.
Challenging the notion that Iran’s foreign policy simply reflects its revolutionary values or theocratic government, *Iran’s Grand Strategy* provides invaluable new insights into what Iran wants and why, explaining the country’s resistance to the United States, its nuclear ambitions, and its pursuit of influence and proxies across the Middle East.

LIVESTREAM | Two Trips, Two Strategies: When a JGOOTer Masters the Skillset
Click here to attend: [https://www.jgoot.com/livestreams](https://www.jgoot.com/livestreams)
Some trips are fixed.
Some trips are flexible.
Some are mostly cash.
Some are almost entirely points.
The mistake is thinking those are different games.
They’re not.
In this special session, JGOOT Advisor Ajay breaks down two completely different trips booked back-to-back:
• A fixed-date Hawaii family trip for five
• A three-month Asia adventure starting in late February
One required specific dates and limited flexibility.
The other leaned heavily into optionality and points.
One used a mix of cash and over 90,000 points.
The other unlocked nearly $18,000 in travel for around $1,000 out of pocket.
Different constraints.
Different strategy.
Same skillset.
It’s time for:
**Two Trips, Two Strategies: See What’s Possible When a JGOOTer Masters the Skillset.**
Ajay will walk through how he thinks about flexibility, how he chooses when to use cash versus points, and why there’s no such thing as “a points trip” or “a cash trip” inside JGOOT.
Inside this session, you’ll learn:
• How to approach fixed-date travel without abandoning strategy
• How flexibility dramatically increases leverage
• How to decide when to deploy points and when to preserve them
• How JGOOT becomes a skill you use on every trip, not a tactic you turn on and off
This isn’t about showing off a big redemption.
It’s not about extremes.
It’s about understanding that once you master the skill, every trip becomes an opportunity.
Whether you’re planning a family vacation with fixed dates or dreaming about a long-term adventure, you’ll walk away seeing exactly what’s possible when strategy compounds over time.

Tuesday Night Skate (TNS)
Hi everyone! Tuesday Night Skates are in full effect! Meet every Tuesday outside of the NOMA-Galladudet U Station at the North entrance (1305 2nd St NE). We will head out at 7pm sharp for an 8 mile skate followed by pizza! We'll skate up the Metropolitan Branch Trail to the Ft. Totten Metro station and back down the trail to M St NE for pizza at Andy's. See ya there! This skate is led by Asher and myself. 🛼
This ride is BEGINNER FRIENDLY! While the full ride is 8 miles long, you have the option to tap out at one of the three red line metro stations along the route in both directions. You'll also have an opportunity to learn new skills and practice drills with the skate leaders at our regroupping spots along the route. The tap out points are as follows:
2 miles: Rhode Island Ave Metro
2.5 miles: Brookland Metro
4 miles: Ft Totten Metro
6 miles: Brookland Metro (on the way back)
7 miles: Rhode Island Ave Metro (on the way back)
8 miles: Andy's Pizza
This is a great way to test and build up your endurance while skating! At least one of the skate leaders will skate at your pace, so you'll never be left behind.
Join us at Andy's Pizza afterwards for a FREE slice of pizza with the purchase of any alcoholic beverage or N/A lemonade!
Route Map: https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=7752153
If we need to cancel one week due to weather or other reasons, we'll update the event page in advance.
Friday Night Fitness Skate
Join us for the Friday Night Fitness Skate! A 12 or 8 mile fitness skate that skates the same route each week so you will know the route and pavement hazards (since it is dark) and be able to work on form, endurance or speed as the cold wind is pushing against you! ;) The route has nice long stretches of uninterrupted skating, open roads with very few cars and the regroups are short and infrequent.
We will meet at Freedom Plaza at 7pm as long as it is not raining, snowing and the pavement is not wet or icy. We’ll warm up with a skate to the Capital and then skate along the mall and museums to the National Monument. We will then head to the Lincoln Memorial through the World War II Memorial.
From the Lincoln we will proceed to Haynes Point down Ohio Drive with the option to take the 3 mile Haynes Point loop (12 mile total skate) or practice stops or stunts at the regroup spot while others skate the loop (8.5 mile total skate.)
The skate is mostly flat on good pavement with a small slope coming down from the Washington Monument and a 40 yard small slop from the Lincoln to Ohio Drive and a couple patches here and there.
The wind can be very strong and cold especially on Ohio Drive and Haynes Point as we skate adjacent to the water.
Please feel free to jazz up your gear with lights, I wear a helmet bike light (since it is pretty dark) and a set of body lights. Most of the regulars skate with lighted wheels for fun! Wear your lights so you have fun, can see and be seen!
In case of bad weather, I will update this post via the comment section around 6pm on Friday.
Of course, all skating is at your own risk.
Hope you will come join us!
