Intégrée au domaine royal en 1314, cette forêt giboyeuse fut aménagée pour la chasse au cerf et au loup à partir du XVIe siècle. A la Révolution, elle devient propriété de l'Etat (domaniale). Ses grandes allées forestières, dessinées pour les chasses royales, traversent de vieilles futaies de chênes auxquels se mêlent châtaigniers, pins sylvestre ou laricio. Avec ses 3 000 hectares de verdures et ses 145 km de routes, elle offre un accès privilégié à la nature à une population urbaine avide de loisirs et détente. Ce qui en fait le « monument » le plus visité de l’Essonne. Entourée par les villes, Sénart bénéficie depuis 1995 du statut de « Forêt de protection » ce qui la met à l’abri de toutes velléités foncières.
