Python Meetup May
For this month's Meetup, we are partnering with **ERNI** to offer two sessions about: **Scaling Python Analysis with Apache Airflow** and **Stopping an Epidemic using the Atomica package**.
\-\-\-
Schedule:
* 18:30: Welcome
* ️ 18:45: Talks
* **&** 19:45: Networking, food and drinks!
* 21:00: Bye!
\-\-\-
* ➡️ **What:** From Scripts to Systems: Scaling Your Python Analysis with Apache Airflow
* **Who**: Marc Gonzalez Planas
* ⏱ **Duration**: 30 minutes
* **Language**: English
* **Abstract**: Data Analysts often face a "production wall" where local Python scripts struggle to meet the demands of a live environment. Moving from ad-hoc analysis to scalable data products requires a shift in focus toward governance, observability, and idempotency. Without proper orchestration, we can fail.
Let's learn how to bridge that gap by refactoring standard Python scripts into automated pipelines using Apache Airflow. We will explore the transition to an "orchestration" mindset, focusing on how to use Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) and the TaskFlow API to transform modular Python functions into a an automatic system.
\-\-\-\-
* ➡️ **What:** How to Stop an Epidemic using the Atomica Package
* **Who**: Eloisa Pérez Bennetts
* ⏱ **Duration**: 30 minutes
* **Language**: English
* **Abstract**: Infectious diseases are a major global health challenge, claiming over 13 million lives each year. Despite the availability of interventions – such as vaccination, testing and treatment – determining the most effective strategy can be challenging, as this depends on complex factors like outbreak severity, funding limitations and sociopolitical influences. Computational modelling offers a powerful tool to assess the potential outcomes of different public health responses, but the difficulty of building fit-for-purpose epidemiological models from scratch is a barrier to widespread use.
Atomica, a Python-based open source simulation engine, addresses this challenge by simplifying the development of epidemiological models. It allows users to create highly configurable data-driven simulations that incorporate disease transmission, intervention strategies and budget constraints. With its user-friendly design and robust capabilities, Atomica allows us to forecast the potential consequences of public health strategies in specific settings. This insight enables policymakers and health organisations to make evidence-based choices, ultimately improving intervention effectiveness and saving lives.

Clay & Create - taller de ceramica/ceramics/pottery
Ever want to try ceramics or build on your skills? Then this would be the perfect opportunity. The main technique used during the session is hand-building giving you the option to make so many different things for yourself, friends or family - bowls, plates, sushi dishes, plants pots and much more. Beginners will be guided through the process of making things using techniques such as slab building, coiling, pinching, texturing, under-glazing and glazing. The more advanced will be free to create and those with experience throwing would be welcome to use my wheel (to be reserved in advance).
Those of you who would like to learn about glazing would need to book 2 workshops.
The workshops are run in English but I do speak Catalan and Spanish. They also provide a great opportunity for non-native speakers to chat and learn.
They last 2.5 hours and basic materials are provided. Your pieces will be fired and ready for pick up around 10 days after.
Cost: 37.50€/person. Bizum: 35€ (647911448) Block of 4 workshops 135€
Connecting the World: Scalable Geospatial Pipelines with GigaSpatial
Speaker: Utku Can Ozturk, Data Scientist and main developer of the Gigaspatial project
Geospatial data is critical for global development, but practitioners constantly battle fragmented data, scaling issues, and complex integrations across vector and raster formats. Enter GigaSpatial, an open-source Python library built by UNICEF’s Giga initiative to help connect every school in the world to the internet.
In this talk, we will explore the architecture behind GigaSpatial and how it replaces the need to stitch together a dozen different tools to answer a single spatial question. We will dive into how the library orchestrates data collection, transformation, and standardisation pipelines at scale. By leveraging strict configuration validation, object-oriented data connectors, and seamless multi-store management, GigaSpatial provides a unified API to wrangle spatial data. Finally, we’ll look at real-world applications across 30 countries, from validating point-of-interest data against multiple global building footprints to running zonal aggregations using different grid systems.
Whether you are a data engineer, a GIS professional, or a Python developer interested in open-source architecture, you might find this talk an interesting look into how we build robust spatial pipelines; and we would love to explore ways you can contribute to this global mission.

Into the Fairytale — Portrait Workshop
Hello, dear photo enthusiasts! :)
Let's use this beautiful springtime and transform a wall of wild vine leaves into an enchanting natural set where light, texture, styling, and imagination come together to create beautiful imagery filled with nature's mystery and wonder.
In this workshop, I invite you to draw inspiration from the work of Kirsty Mitchel and her Wonderland series:
[https://www.kirstymitchell.art/wonderland/](https://www.kirstymitchell.art/wonderland/)
This workshop is about learning how to create extraordinary images from simple surroundings by using nature, flowers, leaves, colour, to create emotion and a story.
Working with a styled model in a styled nature setting, you’ll explore how to turn an ordinary park into something that feels timeless, painterly, and a little bit surreal.
You will be able to:
📸 Create nature-inspired portraits using natural surroundings
🌿 Learn how to build visual magic from simple organic elements
✨ Use light, colour, texture, and composition to create a painterly feel
💡 Direct a model to evoke emotion, softness, mystery, and presence
🍃 See how nature itself can become part of the costume, mood, and narrative.
Perfect for photographers of **all levels**, who love portraits, visual storytelling, and fantasy aesthetics.

1️⃣ **Navigating the Pitfalls of 3rd Party API Integrations (Charla en inglés)**
🎙️ [Pola Gershon](https://www.linkedin.com/in/polagershon/).
Integrating with 3rd party APIs is rarely as smooth as the documentation suggests. From unexpected timeouts and rate limits to silent failures and breaking schema changes, external dependencies are a primary source of system instability. In this session, we will dive into the most common failure modes when connecting to external services and discuss architectural patterns to build resilient, fault-tolerant systems that protect your core logic from the chaos of the outside world.
2️⃣ **Pensar como Product Engineer: más allá de escribir código (Charla en español)**
🎙️ [Iciar Puigpelat](https://www.linkedin.com/in/iciar-puigpelat/), Head of Engineering & Product Manager en [Edpuzzle](https://edpuzzle.com/).

Ensuring Software Quality in the world of AI Developers - Matt Eland
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you.
The building address is 4450 Bridge Park
The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400
You will need to scan your ID at the door to get a visitor badge.
**Abstract**
Like it or not, AI agents are now capable of turning a quickly written paragraph of requirements into a pull request that is ready to be integrated into real-world production applications and it's now our responsibility to make sure AI doesn't go rogue and take down prod - or corrupt our data by misunderstanding the requirements or our existing schemas. In this session we'll explore strategies to protect our codebases through unit and integration testing, documentation, and code review along with additional ways of providing context and guard rails to our AI agents as they carry out the work we've assigned them to do. By the time we're done, you'll have a firm grasp of the problem and understand some helpful options for protecting your codebase from vibe coding mishaps getting YOLOed into prod.

Prompting Is Not Magic: How to Give AI Better Context
Most people use AI like a search box: they type one sentence, hope for the best, and get frustrated when the answer is generic, wrong, or useless.
But getting better results from tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and other AI systems is not about memorizing magic prompts. It is about learning how to give the AI better context.
In this beginner-friendly session, we’ll break down how to make AI dramatically more useful by improving the way you communicate with it. You’ll learn how to give clearer instructions, provide examples, set constraints, ask for better output formats, and use follow-up questions to turn a mediocre answer into a genuinely useful one.
We’ll cover practical techniques you can use immediately for work, learning, writing, coding, planning, research, and everyday problem solving. We’ll also touch on why these same ideas show up in more advanced AI systems, including RAG, agents, evaluations, and AI workflows.
No technical background required. Bring your curiosity, your questions, and maybe one real task you wish AI was better at helping you with.
**What you’ll learn:**
* Why “better prompting” is really about better context
* How to structure requests so AI gives more useful answers
* How to use examples, constraints, and output formats
* How to iterate when the first answer is not good enough
* How these skills connect to more advanced AI workflows
This meetup is for anyone who wants to move beyond basic ChatGPT usage and start getting more practical value out of AI.
LOGISTICS AND PARKING:
The talk starts at 7:00 PM. The first half hour is reserved for everyone to get set up and mingle. Free pizza and drinks!
The cheapest parking option is to find street parking, which will only cost you a few bucks. Otherwise, park in the nearby veteran's museum lot for $8. It's highly recommended you avoid the nearby $15 garage parking.
