*** 🥢 **A Farewell Feast: Mandarin Memories Lunch Meetup** 🥢 **Sunday, January 4, 2026** Join us for a truly special and nostalgic lunch as we gather at a Toronto classic that’s about to say goodbye. The **Mandarin at Yonge & Eglinton** has been part of so many celebrations, traditions, and “just because” meals over the years — and with the restaurant **closing for good on January 18**, this is our chance to enjoy it one last time together. Whether you remember family dinners, post-movie feasts, birthday lunches, or piling plates impossibly high (and going back for more), this Meetup is about **sharing memories, good food, and great company** as we toast an iconic spot. 🍽 **The Plan** * **What:** Lunch at Mandarin AYCE Buffet * **Where:** 2200 Yonge Street * **Meet Time:** **11:15 AM** * **Restaurant Opens:** 11:30 AM * **Cost:** **$32.99** for lunch * *Prices do not include beverages, tax, or gratuities* * All attendees are responsible for their own bills /meals 📍 **Meeting Details** * Look for **Nick and the Meetup sign** * All registered attendees will have Nick’s phone number * Please **respect your RSVP** — this helps the group and the restaurant 📰 **Why This One Matters** This location has been part of the neighbourhood for decades, and its closure marks the end of an era at Yonge & Eglinton. You can read more about the news here: 👉 [https://toronto.citynews.ca/2026/01/02/toronto-mandarin-yonge-eglinton-closing-january-2026/](https://toronto.citynews.ca/2026/01/02/toronto-mandarin-yonge-eglinton-closing-january-2026/) Come hungry, bring your stories, and let’s give this beloved Mandarin the send-off it deserves — one last buffet, one last fortune cookie, and lots of laughs along the way. 🥠✨ See you there!

Our January program is privileged to have Kristen Tregar as our speaker. Ms. Tregar is the co-author with John de Lancie (the actor who portrayed the character Q on Star Trek next generation) of a radio play depicting the events surrounding the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial. The trial decided the issue of some of the Dover school district board members attempting to insert creationism disguised as "intelligent design" into the 9th grade biology curriculum. She will discuss the trial and the process of writing the play. (Bob Leonhard has seen the play and it is riveting and tense). Ms. Tregar's bio is below: Kristen Tregar is a dramaturg, director, playwright, and theatre teacher. She earned her Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre from the UC San Diego and UC Irvine joint program. In addition, she has a MS in Forensic Science from City University of New York- John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a MA in Educational Theatre from New York University- Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. In 2013, in collaboration with Irish colleagues, she founded *The Ireland Project*, an intercontinental devised theatre work with high school students in New York and Tallaght, Ireland. Her original short story "Far From Here" was recently published in *Stay Awhile Longer: More Scenes From Temecula Valley*. She has two rescued dogs (Kira and Harry) and she rides, competes, and foxhunts with her horses, Andromache and Baker Street Irregular. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Jimmy V's Grill & Pub in Grandview Heights. You are responsible for your own meal/drinks. We usually don't have any agenda other than eat, drink and talk. :) If the weather is nice we will be on the back patio, otherwise we are in the cigar room. We'd love to have you join us. COTA bus #5 comes to W. 5th and Wyandotte Rd. And it's a minute walk to the restaurant. *** Did you know that there are atheists everywhere?!?! You may not know it, but we are! We're in your schools, diners, police force, military, government, and some are even still in your churches! So come and join us and meet other local atheists, along with agnostics, heathens, humanists, skeptics, and anyone else who's 'hell bound'! Vision: a Central Ohio that accepts atheism as a viable alternative in all areas of public and private life. Mission: grow, support, and provide community for atheists in Central Ohio. Social meetings held most Tuesdays at a local pub/restaurant at 7:00 PM (and often into the wee hours). Attendees call themselves agnostics, skeptics, humanists, non-theists, deists or even theists. Celebrate National Popcorn Day! (And lunch)
I've supported this local popcorn business for 30 years. It is my pleasure to introduce you to this family-owned, made in house, gourmet popcorn! (note: the official nat'l popcorn day is the 19th but this store is bombarded that day, lol) **TASTING:** The staff can answer every question you have about popcorn. They have a tremendous assortment of 65 sweet and savory flavors, including their classic Columbus Mix (white cheddar/vanilla butternut mix), Pizza, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Buckeye, Buffalo Ranch, and Green Apple. I challenge kids to not try to blow a bubble when they taste the Bubble Gum flavor! ***The owner knows we're coming by and offers complimentary taste testing! BRING YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS!*** **AFTERNOON SNACK**: Bring along $**5.00** cash for a variety of pizza slices to munch on next door at Grandads Pizza. While we wait on our pizzas, we can share Popcorn we purchased at Al's. ## HISTORY OF NATIONAL POPCORN DAY Did you know that the corn we eat and the corn we pop are two different varieties of maize? In fact, the corn you’d find on your dinner table is most likely unable to pop at all! Only one variety of corn is able to become popcorn: Zea mays everta. This particular corn variety has small ears, and the kernels burst when exposed to dry heat. **[Al’s Delicious Popcorn](https://alspopcorn.com)** is a family owned and operated business located in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1985, we have over 30 years of popping experience! During the past 3 decades, we’ve worked hard to perfect our popping techniques and recipes. Our dedication has paid off and today we are proud to offer popcorn lovers over 65 varieties of delectable gourmet popcorn! Being a small, family run operation, we put our heart and soul into what we do. Each and every order is hand prepared, right in our own store, not in some remote processing facility.
