England are up again, this time the opponents are Ghana for each team's second World Cup 2026 game on Tuesday at Gillette Stadium in Boston. The Three Lions', first game saw a 4-2 success in a dream start in Texas. The result has England sitting atop Group L on goal difference over today's opponents. Realistically, another win will guarantee progression to the Round of 32. Ghana were also victorious in their opening game, scoring a late 1-0 victory over Panama, leaving today's two teams side by side at the summit, with any victor this afternoon progressing into the Round of 32. This will be the first competitive match between these two having only met once before, a 1-1 draw in an exhibition friendly match at Wembley back in 2011. We're going back to Hawk & Griffin again for this one. Regulars might point out that the venue is usually closed on Tuesday, but not for the World Cup!! They're mostly beautiful, with wild hair and blazing eyes, and they’re more than happy to drag smitten young men to watery graves. Join Philippa Rappoport, an expert on Slavic folklore and rituals, for a discussion of the water spirits of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia and the traditions centered around them. She'll describe how rusalki were both revered and feared by people who would sing songs in their honor while carrying protective charms. You'll learn how East Slavic mermaid lore permeated wedding rituals and parades, inspired the construction of effigies, and reflected beliefs about women that, throughout the world, have translated into a lot of concern over how women wear their hair and cover their heads. Philippa has wowed crowds with fascinating talks on East Slavic nature spirits and folktales related to the underworld and winter. Her accounts of mermaids promise to be equally entertaining. The Big Slackwater section of the C&O Canal south of Williamsport, MD was completely closed for more than 20 years because the towpath, squeezed into an incredibly narrow corridor between the Potomac on one side and high cliffs on the other, got flooded out once too often. This section has reopened after a $15 million restoration project that should solve the flooding problem. Starting from the Canal's Dam #4, we will head upstream and soon reach the inlet lock that marks the lower end of the Big Slackwater section. The next few miles should be both unusually scenic and unusually interesting as we admire the sturdily-rebuilt towpath beneath our feet. We continue past quaint McMahon Mill and Howell Cave (no relation that we know of) to Lock 41, where the Canal as we usually think of it resumes, with a prism and berm as well as the towpath. Total length of our easy stroll is about 8 miles. Bring beverages, lunch, and about $15 for transportation and trip fees. We'll meet and form carpools from the Grosvenor-Strathmore metro station at 9am. RSVPs close at 8pm the day before to allow for logistical planning.
