Hi and welcome to our next Socrates Café philosophy meetup! Do you have a hunger for deeper understanding of yourself and the world? Do you value deep, honest and respectful dialogue? If yes, then this meetup will be very interesting for you. • WHAT IS A MEETUP ABOUT? At every meetup we have a discussion using Socratic method: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socratic_method](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socratic_method) We ask, answer and discuss questions and ideas to stimulate critical thinking and to widen our perspectives with new concepts and thoughts. The main purpose of these meetups is to enrich ourselves with the perspectives of others, not to convince others about our own perspectives. Our meetups are about our own philosophies of life and not necessarily what the great philosophers and academics have said or written. It is not a debating club or a platform for proselytizing. Instead, we place the emphasis on questioning, open mindedness and challenging our own assumptions while listening to and respecting the views shared by others. A Socrates Café meetup is considered a success when participants leave a discussion with many more questions than they had at the beginning. • WHAT TOPIC IS DISCUSSED AT THE MEETUP? Participants suggest topics at the beginning of each meeting. We then vote and choose that event's most popular topic for discussion. No academic training in philosophy necessary; just enthusiasm for exchanging ideas and points of view. Some examples of subjects chosen on previous meetups: * What ideals are worth dying for? * Why are we never satisfied? * Why is it that human beings know that the society is going wrong, leaders are well informed about it and things continue as is? * Is identity necessary? * How can it be that people in democratic societies are so obsessed with power? (Desire to be different, better, stronger than others) * What is friendship? • WHO PARTICIPATES AT THIS MEETUP? Anybody is more than welcome to join our meetups. Our events gather people from different backgrounds, different cultures, while no philosophical background is mandatory. Our usual participants are people that have a hunger for deeper understanding of themselves and the world. People that value deep, honest and respectful dialogue. The inspiration for Socrates Cafe originates with the book of the same name, written by the philosopher Christopher Phillips. (Socrates Cafe: A Fresh Taste of Philosophy, 2002). Phillips felt that the Socratic method of dialogue and discussion should be practiced not just in academic settings, but among everyday people interested in examining deep questions together. ¿Qué hacemos? A las 20:00h tenemos una meditación budista guiada. La meditación tiene una duración de unos 25 minutos y es accesible y beneficiosa para personas de todos los niveles de experiencia. ¡AVISO! Si es tu primer dia te esperamos 10 minutos antes. ¡Estaremos encatados de recibirte! ¿Qué es el Camino del Diamante? El Buda dio instrucciones a tres clases de personas. Las primeras que deseaban evitar el sufrimiento recibieron las enseñanzas sobre Causa y Efecto, llamadas Camino Angosto (Hinayana). El segundo tipo de personas sentía la necesidad de beneficiar a los demás, por lo que les dio enseñanzas sobre compasión y sabiduría, llamadas Gran Camino (Mahayana). Finalmente a las personas que tenían una confianza sólida en su propio potencial y en de los demás, el Buda explicó enseñanzas del Camino del Diamante (Vajrayana). En este último nivel utilizamos métodos de identificación con la meta y actuamos como un Buda hasta que llegamos a ser como él. En el nivel más elevado, la meta, es el completo desarrollo de la mente, a lo cual denominó el Gran Sello (Mahamudra). ¿Quiénes somos? El Centro Budista Camino del Diamante de Barcelona forma parte de los más de 700 centros de meditación a nivel internacional de la tradición Karma Kagyu del Budismo Tibetano. Estos centros han sido fundados y guiados por Lama Ole Nydahl y su esposa Hannah Nydahl, de acuerdo con los deseos de H. H. XVI Karmapa. Ahora están bajo la guía espiritual de H.H. XVII Gyalwa Karmapa, Trinley Thaye Dorje. Nuestro centro está formado por personas que tienen sus propios trabajos e incorporan las enseñanzas y las meditaciones del Camino del Diamante en sus vidas cotidianas. Nuestros miembros comparten la responsabilidad de guiar meditaciones, contestar preguntas y dar explicaciones sobre budismo. Nuestro trabajo no es remunerado y se basa en el idealismo y la amistad. Formem un grup de gent molt diversa, compartim una vegada al mes (el segon de dissabte de cada mes) un diàleg amb la ment oberta a on explorem que és el "jo" i si realment existeix o és un altre pensament, i que és la consciència en majúscules. Formamos un grupo de gente muy diversa, compartimos una vez al mes (el segundo del sábado de cada mes) un diálogo con la mente abierta en el que exploramos que es el "yo" y si realmente existe o es otro pensamiento, y que es la conciencia en mayúsculas. We form a very diverse group of people, we share once a month (the second Saturday of each month) an open-minded dialogue where we explore what the "I" is and whether it really exists or is it another thought, and what consciousness is in capital letters.

Propongo una primera quedada pequeña entre personas que acompañan procesos personales, relacionales, terapéuticos, corporales, creativos o comunitarios. La idea es encontrarnos entre pares y ver si hay afinidad para hablar de práctica, vínculos, límites, comunicación, coherencia, cansancio, exposición, dinero y soledad profesional; pero también de algo más de fondo: qué implica intentar cuidar la forma en que nos relacionamos con los demás y con nosotros mismos, y qué consecuencias concretas tiene vivir y acompañar desde un lugar más honesto. No está pensado como una formación, una supervisión formal ni un grupo terapéutico. Tampoco como una tribu cerrada, un espacio donde todo el mundo hable igual o un encuentro de networking vacío. Está pensado para personas que ya acompañan o tienen experiencia en relación de ayuda, terapia, educación social, mediación, cuerpo, procesos grupales, creatividad o acompañamiento comunitario, y que echen de menos espacios más horizontales donde poder pensar, contrastar y compartir desde la práctica y desde lo que implica intentar vivir con más honestidad y cuidado en la forma de relacionarse. Esta primera quedada será simplemente una mesa tranquila para conocernos y ver si aparece resonancia. Si hay afinidad, me gustaría que pudiera nacer algo con continuidad; una mesa mensual de apoyo/intervisión entre pares y también una pequeña red viva desde la que puedan surgir otros planes y formas de compartir más allá del contexto puramente profesional. Si no, simplemente habrá sido un café y una conversación :) Pd: Esta convocatoria forma parte de una primera fase de prueba del grupo. Habrá una mesa presencial de domingo y una mesa presencial entre semana. La idea es ver dónde aparece afinidad y, más adelante, si tiene sentido crear algo con continuidad.

Otras veces, el progreso surge al conectar ideas: Einstein reinterpretó el universo y Schrödinger, en ¿Qué es la vida?, contribuyó a conocimientos que llevaron al descubrimiento del ADN. La analogía también juega un papel clave, como muestran los trabajos iniciales de Hofstadter. Emily Brontë's classic novel Wuthering Heights is generally considered a romantic portrayal of undying love. Yet, when first published most readers were appalled by its transgressive nature, "unfeminine" characters and insinuations of taboo topics. In this session we will discuss the historical and social context in which the novel was written and some of those transgressive features that continue to make it a hugely enjoyable and wild ride to read. Hi and welcome to our next Socrates Café philosophy meetup! Do you have a hunger for deeper understanding of yourself and the world? Do you value deep, honest and respectful dialogue? If yes, then this meetup will be very interesting for you. • WHAT IS A MEETUP ABOUT? At every meetup we have a discussion using Socratic method: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socratic_method We ask, answer and discuss questions and ideas to stimulate critical thinking and to widen our perspectives with new concepts and thoughts. The main purpose of these meetups is to enrich ourselves with the perspectives of others, not to convince others about our own perspectives. Our meetups are about our own philosophies of life and not necessarily what the great philosophers and academics have said or written. It is not a debating club or a platform for proselytizing. Instead, we place the emphasis on questioning, open mindedness and challenging our own assumptions while listening to and respecting the views shared by others. Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above. There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change. The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM.
