The People's Republic of China has risen from one of the world's poorest countries to an economic powerhouse. While China is still not at the level of wealth that Western countries are, its power and global presence are greater than anytime in the last two centuries. In 2026, China controls most of the world's manufacturing, and is expanding its economic reach throughout the world. Long associated with simpler industry, these days, China is a force to be reckoned with in advanced manufacturing, competing with Western companies in sectors like cars, electronics, and information technology. With the Belt & Road Initiative, Confucius institutes, and intensifying global trade, China is seeking to spread its economic and cultural influence worldwide. Much discussion around the rise of China focuses on what the West should do in response. This time at Brussels Debaters, we're going to go in a different direction. After all, the world is a big place, and the West and China aren't the only important locations to keep in mind. Come join us for what should be an interesting debate about China: the world's second superpower, the historical hegemon of humanity, and the nation that wishes to reclaim the mantle it once wore. This debate will follow a British Parliamentary format with eight debaters split into four teams of two. Participants who wish to speak are highly encouraged to bring a paper and pen. Through a series of collaborative writing and drawing activities, we will explore ways to dust off the winter cobwebs and map out our intentions. Then, we'll get practical. We’ll be decorating plant pots with personal intentions, before filling them with soil and planting real plants. You'll leave the bookshop with a tangible, living reminder of what you’re choosing to grow this season. Whether you want to dive a bit deeper or just have some fun—all are welcome.
