TOPHATs Places of Pride, The ArQuives, and a bit of the Hair of the Dog
Join Lawrence, you top hatted host, as we discover some of the key locations of our 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Toronto. As a queer ally, I have wanted to include a walk that covers some of the historic location in our Gay Village. We will begin our adventure at The ArQuives, to see an exhibit The Wild and The Weeds, about Hanlan’s Point Beach is positioned as more than the site of the 1971 Gay Day Picnic. https://arquives.ca/event/the-wild-and-the-weeds/ 34 Isabella St, Toronto, ON M4Y 1N1 Then we will head over to the Foy House, a queer art gallery, owned by Georgia W. This heritage building, has survived the wrecking ball of gentrification, and hosts a monthly gayming event. https://www.tagvenue.com/ca/rooms/toronto/67586/foy-house/first-floor 92 Isabella St, Toronto, ON M4Y 1N4 Our walk continues past the The Home Children Plaque Beginning in 1869, British charitable societies removed children from slums and orphanages in congested industrial cities and brought them to Canada to serve as cheap farm and domestic labour. Dr. Barnardo arranged for many *children* to be sent to *Toronto*, where they were sent to work on farms or serve as domestic help. https://www.heritagetoronto.org/explore/barnardo-emigration-home-children/ Our next stop is the AIDS memorial in Barbara Hall Park. Here we will stop for a moment of silence for those who died from this terrible illness. https://www.theaidsmemorial.ca/ Next stop is the 519 Community Centre. For fifty years, The 519 has been a place where community gathers, organizes, celebrates, and shows up for one another. It’s a place to imagine something better. August 15-22, they will host an exhibition of their fifty years of caring for this community. https://www.the519.org/support-the-519/50th/ 519 Church St, Toronto, ON M4Y 2C9 Then we will head past the former location of Glad Day Bookshop. Opened in 1970 by [Jearld Moldenhauer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jearld_Moldenhauer "Jearld Moldenhauer"), it was the city's and Canada's first bookstore targeted to the [gay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay "Gay") community. If you need some Queer literature, they have relocated to 32 Lisgar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glad_Day_Bookshop No queer walk is complete without going to City Park Apartments, the apartment complex was vital to the development of the Church–Wellesley Village in the 1950s. https://www.heritagetoronto.org/explore/city-park-apartments-lgbtq/ Then it's time for some beer and social time at the Hair of the Dog Pub. https://hairofthedogpub.ca/ 425 Church St, Toronto, ON M4Y 2C3

🍔🍦 DANFORTH BURGER & ICE CREAM WALK! 🍦🍔 A Summer Evening Stroll, One of Toronto's Most Underrated Burgers & Giant Ice Cream Scoops Sometimes the best events are the simplest ones. Join us for a relaxed summer evening walk along the Danforth as we make our way from Main Street Station to Broadview Station, enjoying one of Toronto's most vibrant neighbourhoods along the way. This isn't about rushing from place to place. It's about getting outside, enjoying the evening, meeting new people, and sharing a couple of local favourites that many Torontonians still haven't discovered. Our first stop will be Square Boy, a true Danforth institution that serves some of the most underrated burgers in Toronto. No fancy gimmicks. No social media hype. If you've never been before, prepare yourself. The scoops are legendary. Seriously. # In Search of the Kirtland's Warbler **Friday, July 3** **Time:** 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. **Cost:** $99 per person Join me for a special birding adventure in search of one of North America's rarest and most sought-after songbirds, the **Kirtland's Warbler**. Once on the brink of extinction, this remarkable warbler has made an incredible comeback thanks to decades of conservation efforts. Today, a small breeding population can be found just over an hour north of the city, giving Ontario birders a unique opportunity to see this legendary species without travelling to Michigan. Our morning will be dedicated to searching for Kirtland's Warblers, while also enjoying many of the other birds that call this unique habitat home. July is an excellent time to find singing males, and we'll take our time exploring the area while enjoying whatever nature has to offer. Along the way we may also encounter species such as Clay-colored Sparrow, Brown Thrasher, Eastern Towhee, and several warbler species. This outing is suitable for birders of all experience levels. Whether you're hoping to add a lifer to your list or simply enjoy a relaxing day outdoors with fellow nature enthusiasts, this promises to be a memorable adventure. **What's Included** * Transportation from our meeting location * Guided birding throughout the day * Small group experience * Plenty of opportunities for photography and learning **Please Bring** * Binoculars (if you have them) * Camera (optional) * Lunch and snacks * Water * Sunscreen, insect repellent, and weather-appropriate clothing * Comfortable walking shoes As always, wildlife can never be guaranteed, but we'll be visiting one of the best locations in Ontario for this rare and beautiful bird. I look forward to sharing another great day in nature with you! **Murray**

You can e-transfer to the following email at:** **torontohistorywalks@gmail.com** Get your history fix with this special double tour. It combines both U of T and historic Yorkville in one shot. On March 15, 1827, a royal charter was issued by King George IV, for the establishment of King's College. The charter was the result of the efforts of John Strachan, the Anglican Bishop of Toronto, the College's first president. King's College was a religious institution tied to the Church of England and the Family Compact. In 1849, the newly elected government of Canada voted to rename the College, University of Toronto and broke with the church. Strachan resigned to open Trinity College as a private seminary. University College was created as a branch of University of Toronto. During the American Civil War, the threat of Union blockade prompted the creation of the University Rifle Corps, which saw action against the Fenians on the Niagara border in 1866. Founded in 1830 by Joseph Bloor, and William Botsford Jarvis, the Village of Yorkville was muddy York's northern residential suburb. With historic establishments like The Red Lion Inn, Yorkville Town Hall or even the fierce political radical William Lyon Mackenzie, it was here that notoriety was achieved, in Yorkville itself. Omnibus horse drawn streetcar service started in 1849 to connect the old St. Lawrence Market in Toronto with Yorkville, and by 1853, the population of the village had reached 1,000 residents. By the 1870s, Potter's Field, a cemetery stretching west of Yonge Street at Bloor Street was closed, and the remains moved to other area cemeteries. Yorkville was growing fast, and soon Toronto was ready to pull the neighbourhood into its orbit. On February 1, 1883, Yorkville's name changed officially. It was now known as St. Paul's Ward! This walking tour is for all fitness levels and skills. Please dress for the weather. The extensive walking tour begins at the Queen's Park SUBWAY Station at the **southwest corner** of University Avenue and College Street adjacent to the Tim Horton's at the corner. The walk ends at the Toronto Reference Library at Yonge Street and Asquith. This tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person! \*\* **Please note: Please e-transfer the ticket price when booking your space for this tour!
