The Lost World of Socotra | NYE in Socotra, Yemen
Join us for adventure in Socotra, place like no other, where the **Dragon Bloods sway and the blue waters spray**.
Lying in turquoise seas between Arabia and Africa hundreds of kilometers off the coast of Yemen is one of the **worldâs most untouched archipelagos,** the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean, a treasure trove of biodiversity found nowhere else on Earth! From the umbrella-like Dragon Blood trees to the freshwater crabs scurrying across white sandy beaches, even the small population going about their lives unaffected by the world around them, youâll think youâve discovered a lost world on another planet.
Used since antiquity as a medicinal cure-all, the crimson-red resin of the **Dragon Blood tree** earned its name through legends of battles between dragons and elephants and withstood millennia on this island paradise since the dawn of humankind. Recognized for its strange appearance, like an upside-down umbrella, itâs found only on Socotra and cannot survive anywhere else on Earth.
Besides the Dragon Blood tree, Socotra is home to more than 300 species of flora and fauna endemic to the island, from tiny Socotri scorpions and terrestrial reptiles to countless birds, ghost crabs, bats, and chunky, pink-flowered bottle trees, **the entire island is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site!**
Life evolves on Socotra uninterrupted from the modern world, before the airport was built in 1999, the only way to see the island was on a cargo ship! When such paradise is in our own neighborhood, making extended weekend possible to a place where such beauty is not long for this world to the **Island of Happiness**.

Tagine with Tuaregs | NYE Journey Across Southern and Coastal Algeria
The **largest country in Africa**, imposing Algeria covers an area of almost two and a half million square kilometers. From the green and mountainous Mediterranean coast, where most of its population lives, Algeria sweeps southward into the heart of the Sahara Desert. **Nearly 90% of Algeria is uninhabited**, with most of the land being in the Sahara, a hot, dry and unforgiving region covering 80% of the country.
As a **gateway to North Africaâs mountains, beaches and deserts, Algeria is a melting pot of cultures** â having seen, over millennia, the Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, French and even pirates pass through it.
Algeriaâs history, like most of North Africa, is marked by warring tribes, Islamisation and the subsequent colonisation by European powers. The country was occupied by France for 132 years until 1962, when a brutal bloodbath saw it finally gain independence, only for the Algeria to plunge into civil war in the 1990s.
Though still scarred by the unrest of the past, today Algeria one of the most developed countries in Africa, and has **much to offer travelers, from magical summers on the Mediterranean coast to a vast desert, imposing Roman ruins and prehistoric art** â all infused with the depth of Arabic and Bedouin culture.
In the harsh and unforgiving Sahara, the everchanging desert terrain is a testament to the **eternal transformation of this region by the elements**. Ever so slowly, **rocks are whittled** **into sculptures of dramatic and extraordinary beauty**. The result is a near-indescribable landscape of vivid red dunes, formidable rock formations and twisting canyons that hide crystal-clear watering holes.
Aside from incredible beauty, there is a rich, fascinating and ancient history here, too, going back to the early days of humanity. **Unique, UNESCO-listed archaeological sites** house the remains of hominids and Homo Sapiens more than two million years old, and the concentration of **cave paintings and engravings** essentially make the area an open-air museum.
In this trip, we go off the beaten path to capture Algeriaâs two extremes, taking in the sparkling Mediterranean coast as well as the breathtaking desert dunes. Weâll move from the ancient port city of BĂŠjaĂŻa to the endless desert vistas of Djanet, discovering majestic landscapes, fascinating history, and age-old Berber traditions along the way.
**Letâs go!**
**Day 1 // Algiers & Flight to Tamanrasset**
Arrival in Algiers, immigration, coffee and head straight to the city. First we head up to the city's heights to discover **Makam Echahid, a monument in memory of Algerian fighters** who fell for the liberation of the country. Dominating the city from a height of 92 meters, it is composed of three concrete palm trees joined together, symbolizing the countryâs three revolutions. After lunch in the city center, weâll **explore the Kasbah**, meeting some of its artisans. Weâll then **tour the cityâs major landmarks**, including Sidi Ramdane Mosque, the Bir Chebana fountain, Princess Khedaoudj Palace, Mustapha Pasha Palace, the fishing district, the New Mosque, Church of the Sacred Heart, the famous Grande Poste, Basilica of Our Lady of Africa and more.
Weâll have dinner near the airport, then catch our domestic flight to Tamanrasset. Arrival, transfer to our camp for overnight.
**Day 2 // Hoggar and Assekrem**
Early departure for a full-day excursion to the heart of the Hoggar Mountains. Visit Assekrem, the highest point of the region, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Atakor Mountains, and the Hermitage of Father de Foucauld, built in 1910.
Enjoy a picnic lunch near the Afilal guelta, then hike to the summit. Overnight bivouac at the mountain refuge.
**Day 3 //** **Tagmart**
Wake up early to witness the spectacular sunrise from the plateau. After breakfast, set out for an excursion to the rock art site of Tagmart, where ancient engravings depict early human life and the origins of calligraphy.
Return to Tamanrasset by late afternoon for a city tour of this vibrant capital of the Ahaggar region. Dinner and overnight stay in a local guesthouse (gĂŽte).
**Day 4 // Tamanrasset- Algiers â BĂŠjaĂŻa**
Early start this morning, as we fly from Tamanrasset to Algiers, where weâll connect for a flight to **the port city of BĂŠjaĂŻa, located on one of the most beautiful bays of the Mediterranean coast** and backdropped by the Babors mountain range. BĂŠjaĂŻa has a deep history, standing on the site of the ancient Carthaginian city of Saldae, and occupied over the millennia by the Romans, Vandals, Spanish and Ottomans. For centuries, it was also a stronghold of the Barbary pirates who roamed the North African coast.
After checking into the hotel, weâll take a city tour, discovering monuments such as the 12th century casbah, rebuilt by the Spaniards when the city was taken in 1510, and historic Bab El Fouka fort.
**In the evening celebration of NYE Algerian style!**
**Day 5 // BĂŠjaĂŻa**
In the morning, weâll make our way into **Gouraya National Park, a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve**, trekking to the summit of Yemma Gouraya at an altitude of 660 meters. The mountain is the burial place of its namesake, and the city's patron saint, Yemma Gouraya. At the top weâll find a fort built by the Spanish in the 16th century, and enjoy sweeping views over the area and coastline.
Weâll return to town to refuel with some lunch, then head back to the park to for a **hike to Pic des Singes, or Peak of the Monkeys**, located in the Cap Carbon area very near to the coast. Weâll ascend 430 meters to this habitat for the endangered Barbary macaque, and hopefully enjoy some close encounters with these cute and mischievous creatures â the only African primate that survives north of the Sahara Desert.
**Day 6 // Coastal Drive & Departure**
This morning weâll make our way back to Algiers along the beautiful Mediterranean coast, making stops at **the port towns of Azzefoune and Tigzirt**, where Roman ruins have weathered the elements and stood the test of time.
Weâll have lunch near the airport in Algiers then catch our mid-afternoon flight.

Far Off the Map | NYE Journey to Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau via Senegal
**500 km west of Senegal lies Cape Verde**, the island chain of vertigo-inducing mountains, green valleys of flowers and sugar cane, crystal blue waters and white sandy beaches. Here, the music and rhythms of Creole West Africa are heard across quaint seaside villages, towering peaks and sparkling bays.
This island paradise was uninhabited until the 1500s, when it was discovered by Portuguese explorers who took advantage of its strategic location for cross-Atlantic trade. Cape Verde has remained something of a well-kept secret since; though centuries have passed, the **majority Creole population (European and West African descent)** has rarely exceeded 500,000 people.
The geologic origins of the island chain are **a volcanic hot spot deep in the Atlantic**, which over millennia created an otherworldly archipelago of steep craggy mountains and lush green landscapes. A stunning highlight is the **dizzying vertical island of Santo AntĂŁo**, **ruptured with canyons, deep gorges and valleys** home to sugar cane plantations and tropical flora and fauna.
**This time, we invite you to join us on an extended journey**. After NYE celebrations in Cape Verde, we will continue to the mainland of Mama Africa **to explore yet another hidden corner: Guinea-Bissau.**
This tiny West African country lies sandwiched between its larger neighbors Senegal and Guinea, on the wild Atlantic coast. This little-known treasure has it all â like **a microcosm of Africa**, it boasts tropical landscapes, white-sand beaches, an ethnically diverse population and abundant wildlife. Visitors will discover a nation where ancient traditions are kept alive, and the locals love a party.
Once part of the kingdom of Kaabu in the 16th and 17th centuries, **Portuguese colonial rule** took hold and spread its way across the country, until the land was formally colonised as Portuguese Guinea in the 19th century. After independence was declared in 1973, Guinea Bissau was hailed as a potential model for African development.
Today, however, the country is struggling. Its vital cashew nut crop provides a modest living for most farmers â in fact, the nation is **one of the worldâs top five cashew producers**. But decades of political unrest have led to of Guinea Bissau being ranked **one of the poorest countries in the world**.
The **capital city of Bissau** reflects the many years of Portuguese colonial rule, with a **vibrant and colorful Old Town** full of crumbling European-style architecture. After taking in landmarks such as the Cathedral of Our Lady of CandelĂĄria and the Presidential Palace, a visit to the chaotic Bandim Market is the perfect way to get a feel for day-to-day local life.
The countryâs crown jewel is the forested, sparsely populated **BijagĂłs Archipelago, a collection of 88 islands** located about 50 km off the mainland coast. Powdery beaches and turquoise waters beckon in **âthe Polynesia of West Africaâ**, and this protected biosphere reserve features thriving communities of saltwater hippos, monkeys, chimps, buffaloes, crocodiles, and sea turtles, as well as hundreds of species of birds.
These islands are known for their **unique blend of African and Portuguese cultures**, and are home to **the Bijagos people**, an ethnic group with distinct customs and language. Colorful traditional festivals and rituals include the Bafata Dance, a celebration of fertility and the harvest.
**Letâs go!**
**Day 1 // Connecting flight from Dakar to Praia**
Meeting at Dakar airport at 17:30 for connecting flight to Praia 19:30-20:30. Immigration clearance, overnight.
**Day 2 // Santiago - Cidade Velha & Praia City**
After breakfast transfer to Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the first European colonial outpost in the tropics. Walk through the historic Rua Banana, visit the Royal Fortress of SĂŁo Filipe, and learn about the townâs role in the transatlantic slave trade. Famous visitors include Vasco da Gama, Columbus and Magellan, as well as numerous pirates who continually plundered the place. We will enjoy a walk around the small town, visit the museum at the fort and take a seafood lunch in a small bar on the beach. Dinner at a restaurant at Prainha Beach in the evening. Possibility for a night walk to the Farol de Maria Lia lighthouse.
**DAY 3 // Sao Vicente - Mindelo**
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for a flight to SĂŁo Vicente Island. Upon arrival, weâll head directly to Mindelo, the islandâs cultural heart.
Check in the hotel in the charming colonial-style city, then set out to explore its colorful streets, bustling markets, art galleries, and music bars. Walk along the waterfront, visit the replica of Lisbonâs BelĂŠm Tower, and relax on Laginha Beach. Enjoy the rhythms of Cape Verdean music and savor delicious local dishes in the evening.
**DAY 4 // Santo AntĂŁo - Porto Novo to Paul**
Today begins with a scenic ferry ride to the lush and mountainous island of Santo AntĂŁo. After arriving in Porto Novo, we will drive along the dramatic Corda Road, one of the most beautiful roads in the country, offering panoramic views of deep valleys and towering peaks.
Weâll make several photo stops, including a visit to the breathtaking Cova Crater, a dormant volcano now filled with farmland. The journey continues to the verdant Paul Valley, considered the greenest and most fertile valley in Cabo Verde. Settle into our hotel and enjoy the peaceful rural ambiance.
**DAY 5 // Santo AntĂŁo - Paul Valley**
Wake up to the fresh mountain air and set out for a hike in the Paul Valley, a nature paradise. As we walk along cobbled paths and terraced fields, pass through traditional villages where locals still live in harmony with nature.
We will get introduce to the flora and fauna of the region, and we'll see how locals cultivate sugarcane, coffee, and tropical fruits. Enjoy spectacular views of towering peaks, waterfalls, and lush greenery. Weâll also have the chance to visit a local distillery and taste the famous grogue, a traditional sugarcane liquor.
**DAY 6 // Santo AntĂŁo - SĂŁo Vicente - Santiago**
After breakfast, we say goodbye to Santo AntĂŁo and transfer back to Porto Novo for the ferry ride to SĂŁo Vicente. Upon arrival in Mindelo, enjoy some final free time for shopping or relaxing before heading to the airport for your flight back to Santiago Island. Take in the last aerial views of the islands as you transition from the mountainous beauty of Santo AntĂŁo back to the vibrant rhythm of Santiago.
**DAY 7 // Guinea Bissau**
Airport transfer for a flight to Guinea Bissau 01:45-04:20 (or return flight to Dakar 15:20-18:20),
After breakfast, we set sail for Bolama Island, once the proud colonial capital of Portuguese Guinea. From 1879 until 1941, Bolama served as the administrative heart of the colony, before the capital was relocated to Bissau. Later, in 1951, the territory was officially reclassified as an âoverseas provinceâ of Portugal, remaining under colonial rule until Guinea-Bissauâs hard-fought independence in 1974.
Today, Bolama is a place where history lingers in silence. The town, once bustling with officials and traders, is now a quiet shadow of its former self. Its faded colonial architecture, old government buildings, wide avenues lined with mango trees, and decaying neoclassical façades that tell stories of grandeur that never quite matched the harsh realities of island life. The scarcity of fresh water made the administrationâs ambitions fragile, and with time, nature reclaimed the streets and plazas. Strolling through Bolama feels like stepping into a forgotten museum beneath the open sky, where walls crumble gracefully under the tropical sun.
We will enjoy lunch in one of Bolamaâs local restaurants, savoring freshly caught fish and seafood. In the afternoon, we sail onward to Rubane Island, part of the BijagĂłs Archipelago, where the rhythm of life is dictated by the sea and wind. Upon arrival, we check into the lodge, a serene retreat surrounded by palm trees and the gentle sound of waves. Buffet dinner and an overnight stay in this tropical paradise.
**Day 8 // Sacred Hippos of Orango National Park**
In the morning we set off for an excursion to Orango Island, one of the natural treasures of the BijagĂłs. The highlight of our visit is the chance to explore the saltwater lagoons, where we may encounter the rare West African saltwater hippos. Revered as sacred animals by the local BijagĂłs communities, these hippos connect the deep spiritual bond between people and nature.
Beyond the hippos, Orango is alive with biodiversity: monkeys darting between trees, gentle manatees gliding through the waters, and a vibrant bird population filling the skies with color and song. It is not only a sanctuary for wildlife but also a cultural landscape. The BijagĂłs people live in a unique matriarchal society, where women often lead villages and play central roles in community decision-making. Learning about their customs offers insight into one of West Africaâs most distinctive cultures.
Lunch will be served as part of the excursion, often prepared by local hosts or enjoyed as a picnic amidst nature. By afternoon, we return to Ponta Anchaca, where the rest of the evening is free to relax by the ocean and reflect on the dayâs encounters.
**Day 9 // Relax in BijagĂłs and Return to Bissau**
Our final morning in the BijagĂłs is dedicated to relaxation. You can choose to lounge on the golden sands, enjoy optional activities such as kayaking or snorkeling in the crystal clear waters, or take a walk to visit a nearby village.
Later, we sail back toward the mainland, returning to Bissau, the capital city. Upon arrival, weâll hit the streets to historic old quarter, where narrow streets are framed by colonial-era buildings, worn yet full of character.
Bissau is a city where Africa and Portugalâs legacies intertwine and tropical vibrancy meets faded European façades.
Presidential Palace, the grand yet timeworn Cathedral of Bissau, and the Fort of SĂŁo JosĂŠ da Amura, are stronghold whose origins date back to the early Portuguese colonial era. We also visit Che Guevara Square and the Monument to Independence, a structure built in the 20th century by the Portuguese. Remarkably, after independence it remained the only Portuguese monument left standing. Renamed the âMonument of the Heroes of Independence,â it was crowned with a star, symbolizing a new national identity. Today, the square is a popular gathering place for locals, a vibrant meeting ground that connects past and present. Overnight in Bissau.

The Matzah Ball by Jean Meltzer
I don't usually pick romance but I really wanted to do a Hanukkah book. It's a bit on the longer side but hopefully a quick read. The library only has 5 audiobooks so please try to remember to "release it" when you're done.

Book summary:
Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is a nice Jewish girl with a shameful secret: she loves Christmas. For a decade sheâs hidden her career as a Christmas romance novelist from her family. Her talent has made her a bestseller even as her chronic illness has always kept the kind of love she writes about out of reach.
But when her diversity-conscious publisher insists she write a Hanukkah romance, her well of inspiration suddenly runs dry. Hanukkahâs not magical. Itâs not merry. Itâs not *Christmas*. Desperate not to lose her contract, Rachelâs determined to find her muse at the Matzah Ball, a Jewish music celebration on the last night of Hanukkah, even if it means working with her summer camp archenemyâJacob Greenberg.
Though Rachel and Jacob havenât seen each other since they were kids, their grudge still glows brighter than a menorah. But as they spend more time together, Rachel finds herself drawn to Hanukkahâand Jacobâin a way she never expected. Maybe this holiday of lights will be the spark she needed to set her heart ablaze.
Free In-Person Meeting: Get Over Losses & Betrayals, Build Lasting Relationships
This is a free, in-person meeting on the subject of betrayals, losses and how to get over them so you can build lasting relationships.
Burdened by a stressful relationship? Unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of anger, despair or self-doubt. They can create dwindling spirals of fights and seeking to make-up, or trying to âpin the blameâ on someone or something. If you donât find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse.
Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well.
Whether you are suffering from a divorce, or a painful break-up, donât know who to trust (or who to CHOOSE) as a partner, friend, boss or employee - the anxiety of relationship troubles can really make a mess of things. Maybe youâve suffered a betrayal, or are dealing with hostility or criticalness or invalidation. Dwindling relationships can involve destructive behavior, where we hurt those we love, or start succumbing to self-destructive thoughts, attitudes or behaviors that spiral out of control and affect much more than our immediate relationship.
Past losses in love or life can affect how we act or react to new people and situations and hold us back from even starting to create new, possibly great relationships! How can one get back onto a saner course of action?
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life: human relationships!
Break free from self imposed limitations
Here we will discuss:
⢠How to âeraseâ the trauma of past hurts and betrayals so that one isnât always repeating past mistakes.
⢠Why and how do the negative emotions of others affect you?
⢠Why is my partner withdrawing and what can I do about it?
⢠Why do we sometimes feel compelled to hurt the ones we love?
⢠Fights & arguments - what's really behind them?
⢠What underlies âcorrosive criticismâ or the need to invalidate self or others?
⢠How one can stably change oneâs outlook on life so they can affect positive change?
⢠Where do compulsive destructive behaviors come from and what can be done about them?
⢠How to form closer bonds & keep growing the relationships with the people you care about?
⢠How to enhance oneâs own ability to survive and create positive healthy relationships whether in love, family & friendships or in work, business or oneâs career?
Relationships can be hard and life itself IS challenging. Why not arm yourself with the knowledge and breakthroughs that have been made about the mind, mental reactions & interpersonal relationships, so that one has better awareness and control over themselves and life in general.
Learn where painful experiences are âstoredâ and how they can unknowingly affect us. You will also find out how one can âeraseâ those past painful experiences so that one is free to move forward without being tripped up by the past. Learn too, about what can lead some people to become âtoxicâ personalities and how to identify those traits in others so you wonât be tripped up trusting the wrong person.
Our free Meet-ups occur in a safe environment where one can learn, without fear of judgment or criticism, and without the recommendation of harmful mental techniques or therapies, just how YOU can get yourself onto a happier & more successful path: in love & in life.
We look forward to having you join us!

The Lion in Bexley
Take a break from the craziness of the holiday season and relax at The Lion with us.
This is an new (to me) place in Bexley that serves cocktails, beer and wine, coffee, tea, pastries, snacks, caviar--a little bit of everything. The cocktail they made for The Drexel to sell for screenings of "Wicked For Good" was one of the best cocktails I've ever had. Their tea list is also impressive. Take special note of the Emperor's Private Reserve Pu-erh!

I don't know how large the place is, so it's possible we might find places to sit, or we might need to stand. This is an informal event to explore this interesting location.
