Pet Loss Support Group
This gathering will be a safe place for those who are anticipating, in the midst of, or recovering from companion animal loss. Our beloved companions are considered family and the grief can be overwhelming when each reaches their time to go. Speaking about our beloveds helps validate and honor them; sharing the pain allows us to understand and process. We don’t recover from grief or go through it. We learn to carry it with us, allowing the pain to evolve into memories and ongoing love. We hope to minimize regret or guilt by being our companions’ steward and advocate.
There is no cost or expectation, other than compassion for all without judgment.
The facilitator is a certified Pet Loss Doula (University of Vermont) who has experienced pet loss many times. Send questions to petlossdoula@gmail.com.
Birding by Ear for Beginners especially for Blind and Low Vision participants!
We will take a very slow walk throughout Alcova Heights Park, which is very flat and has wide pathways. The group leader will use a pair of binoculars if necessary, and seeing participants may use binoculars as well. However, our goal will be for both seeing and blind/low vision persons to hear, identify, and learn the sounds of the birds in the park and potentially develop mnemonics for the bird calls. You might be surprised to find how quickly you will learn the sounds of bird species! We will be aided by the Merlin app, and the group leader will record our bird observations in the eBird app. Over time, we will be able to query eBird to see our growing birding expertise! Participants wishing to use eBird and Merlin type apps, please download them and create accounts ahead of time; we won’t have time to do that during the event.
Bird walk at Patuxent Refuge (formerly at FUNA)

Pro-Animal Meetup
Guest Speaker: Susan Prolman, Activism for Animals
Post-PAM Animal Action: TBD
Susan Prolman is a lifelong advocate for animals. Susan served as Executive Director of the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and as Director of International Campaigns for The Humane Society of the United States (now called Humane World for Animals). She lobbied against factory farming and for environmental protection for years. While a Georgetown University law student, she helped to create the school's first animal law course. Susan leads Activism for Animals, which shares ideas for creative, positive, everyday actions individuals can take to spread animal rights messages in their communities.
Join your fellow animal lovers and DC Animal Protection to discuss what’s happening in the animal advocacy scene in DC! This series is a weekly meetup, with guest speakers from all of the major animals rights orgs. We’ll host non-profits such as Pro-Animal Future, International Council for Animal Welfare, DC Voters for Animals, The Humane League, Mercy for Animals and Direct Action Everywhere as well as local grassroots groups like the DC Coalition Against Foie Gras and sanctuaries. We’ll also have special sessions related to health, nutrition and mindfulness!
We encourage anyone who is interested in helping animals to attend- no need to be vegan! Come learn about our rich variety of local activism. With protests, outreach, wheat-pasting, signature collecting, leafletting, lobbying, tabling etc. there’s something to match everyone’s comfort level and skill set.
Coffee, bagels and community will be provided! Feel free to bring any extra treats to share (no animal products please.) Hope to see you soon! :)
Note: Unfortunately, animals are not allowed at our venue. Please leave your furry friends at home.
