Capoeira
Capoeira
Capoeira (capo-way-ra) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that is unlike any other martial art. Capoeira incorporates flowing movements with kicks, dodges, and some acrobatics. It is often mistaken for a dance for those reasons. Since it’s origins in the 17th century, it has evolved from a secret fighting practice into an art emphasizing self-expression and community celebration. It is great for the body and mind! In addition to gaining strength and flexibility in class, students learn about Brazilian culture, history, and language (Portuguese). On November 26, 2014 capoeira was granted a special protected status as "intangible cultural heritage” by UNESCO. The session is offered InStudio only. **Sign up at www.piesfitnessyoga.com required at least two hours before class begins.** The address is 1322 Prince St Alexandria, VA 22314. Our entrance is located on the side of the building, parallel to West St. **Street parking is available and additional parking is located at Shiloh Baptist church, spaces 36,37,38,39.** The church is located across the street from the studio, on the corner of Duke St. and West St.

Abura Soba and Uji Matcha at Kajiken and Kyo Matcha in Annandale!
Abura Soba and Uji Matcha at Kajiken and Kyo Matcha in Annandale!
Join us for the soooo good Abura Soba at ***Kajiken*** in Annandale! ***What is Abura Soba?*** Abura Soba is a soupless noodle, mixed with house special sauces - chili oil, souy sauce, vinegar, minced garlic and pepper powder. It is the ultimate noodle where you can fully enjoy the taste. Kajiken is the pioneer of Nagoya-style Abura Soba, serving bold, brothless noodles since 2010. Baltimore Magazine: If you’ve never been to a ramen shop, Kajiken would be an excellent place to start. And if your idea of fun is a big bowl of noodles drenched in porky goodness, you have someplace to be. A long counter bar fronts the stoves, helmed by cooks tending vats of boiling water. Low weather systems move above the pots, into which the noodles are dropped and lifted with impressive dexterity. The entire crew will call out as you enter and exit—cries of “Irasshaimase” (welcome) and “Arigato gozaimasu” (thank you very much) like cheerful incantations. And then there are the bowls of noodles, in this case an iteration of ramen called abura soba or mazesoba, which is not soba at all but the thicker version of ramen noodles, served with a variety of accompaniments and without broth. Kajiken (Baltimore) is the first U.S. location of a popular Japanese abura soba chain that began in Nagoya and which now numbers some 100 locations worldwide. Ramen and its variations have been essential for a long time in Japan; tsukemen, or dip ramen, became popular about 10 years ago in American cities, and abura soba has also made the jump, especially to college towns. Kajiken specializes in various toppings for noodles, so you can experiment with things like mentaiko (fish roe), umeboshi (Japanese plum), and menma (bamboo shoots), or add what you especially like (tomatoes, cheddar, soft-boiled eggs) to make an idiosyncratic mash-up. This can be a lot, especially as the restaurant doesn’t allow substitutions, and the abura soba versions—a basic, with chashu (discs of roast pork), menma, scallions, and nori; curry; carbonara; beef and onions; a cold version; and a vegan iteration—already come with plenty of ingredients. You will be instructed to stir everything up with your chopsticks, as the absence of soup means that the tare, which is the concentrated sauce, has been installed at the bottom of your bowl. Be sure to dose your bowl with rice vinegar and chile oil, which give some extra flavor and, more importantly, a hit of acid to counter all the pork, pasta, and oil. There are other items on the menu, notably more traditional tonkotsu ramen, made Hakata-style, as well as donburi rice bowls, and an impressive list of appetizers. Kajiken has very good versions of gyoza, or pork dumplings; and karaage, or fried chicken. And best of all, there is takoyaki, fried balls of dough embedded with octopus and topped with shaved bonito, curls of dried fish that wave in the heat and make the dish look disconcertingly like a terrarium. (Don’t be deterred—it’s delicious.) There’s no booze or hot tea, but there is salted plum soda, a sour-salty-sweet drink that’s worth trying. There is also a very cute little desert shop attached (Kyo Matcha) that has a surprisingly robust dessert menu, including ice cream, yuzu cheesecake, and wondrous slices of deep green matcha crepe cake. Check out Kajiken menu [here ](https://www.kajiken-usa.com/) Check out Kyo Matcha menu [here](https://www.kyotomatcha.us/menu) **WAITLIST:** Meetup does not allow a waitlist for paid events. NEW CLASS!! Sculpting Photos at the National Gallery of Art
NEW CLASS!! Sculpting Photos at the National Gallery of Art
THIS CLASS IS OFFERED THROUGH CAPITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER **PLEASE REGISTER WITH CAPITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER, NOT MEETUP!** https://capitalphotographycenter.com/classes/class/2026-04-19-sculpting-photos **Sculpting Photos** The sculptures in the west wing National Gallery of Art offers photographers a unique creative challenge: The art is already shaped by light, form, and intention. In this class we will explore how photography can re-imagine three-dimensional works through thoughtful observation and creative choices. By paying close attention to light, shadow, texture, and perspective, photographers can reveal new interpretations of sculptures, highlighting details, moods, and relationships that may not be immediately visible to the naked eye. Through guided looking and hands-on practice in the galleries, students will learn how camera position, framing, depth of field, and timing transform solid, static objects into dynamic photographic images. Whether isolating a gesture, emphasizing scale, or experimenting with abstraction, this class encourages photographers to move beyond documentation and toward personal expression, using sculpture as a powerful starting point for visual storytelling. Whether you’re new to photography or looking to deepen your practice, this class invites you to see the sculpture and your creative process in fresh ways. In this class you will learn to: 1. Develop observational skills by learning to analyze sculpture in terms of form, space, light, and texture, and translating those observations into intentional photographic choices. 2. Explore creative photographic techniques such as framing, perspective, and selective focus to reinterpret sculptures and create expressive, original images in an indoor museum setting. 3. Build visual storytelling skills by using photography to convey mood, movement, or meaning, helping students articulate a personal response to sculptural works. All cameras are welcome, from your smartphone to DSLR. However, we recommend the camera you use has multiple lenses or a zoom, and ability to adjust exposure. Lenses in the range of 28mm to 200mm would be appropriate. No flash or tripod since we'll be in a museum. Questions can be directed to Marie Joabar at info@capitalphotographycenter.com. Class limit: 8-9 *** **THIS CLASS IS OFFERED THROUGH CAPITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER** https://capitalphotographycenter.com/classes/class/2026-04-19-sculpting-photos

Creative Minds Summit: Color Mapping Abstract Art
Creative Minds Summit: Color Mapping Abstract Art
We are honored to host Jaime Echt from The Crafter's Workshop for our annual Creative Minds Summit. Whether you’re new to Stencil Butters® or a longtime fan, this class is going to bring your Mixed-Media/Art Journaling game up a notch. You’re going to start by making a color swatch ring of all your favorite colors (and there are over 40 colors to choose from.) This’ll give you a chance to see how colors interact with water and other modifiers. Plus it’ll be a great reference tool to take home with you. From there you’ll create one or more frameable pieces of art. Jaime will walk you through technique after technique, from mark-making to stenciling, from dry brush to wet palette knife, and everything in between. You’ll leave with the swatch ring and at least one finished piece. Feel free to bring your art journal to work in. Tour of Brothers Drake Meadery and mead/tea tasting
Tour of Brothers Drake Meadery and mead/tea tasting
Join us for a tour of Brothers Drake Meadery in Grandview, hosted by the owner Oron Benary. He will explain the mead-making process and offer us generous samples of their fine meads. Mead is basically wine that is made from honey instead of grapes. There are many different flavors that range from dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, to sweet. They are best known for their Apple Pie Mead. Oron has offered us a special price of 5.00 each person for the tour and tasting, which is normally 25.00 per person. I've taken the tour several times, and it's always enlightening and fun. Rebecca will bring a tea that will pair well with the mead for a tea tasting afterwards. Park anywhere around the building. Please avoid parking in front of the houses in the neighborhood behind the Meadery. Please keep your RSVP current. Knowing how many will attend will help Brothers Drake plan accordingly to accommodate us.

AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s? This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation? We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee. Whether you’re deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus.
