This class is for French speakers with an Intermediate level. **THE CLASS:** This is a face-to-face conversation class lasting 90 minutes run by a French native & professional tutor (in London since 2016). The whole class happens in French and is dedicated to French speakers with an Intermediate level (if not sure, send a message to the organiser). The tutor helps you to structure and improve your phrasing, and to develop your understanding. During the class, first, we dedicate some time for a little introductory chat. Then, we approach the theme, read a text (you get a copy for the session), speak, learn vocabulary and things about French culture. The theme is always linked to French, the French and France. At the end, we wrap up and keep a few minutes for some miscellaneous questions. Hi, On the 21st of June, it's "la fête de la musique!". Let's celebrate together, cook, eat and sing in French (maybe...) in this workshop, we will learn to prepare some picnic items such as bread (vegan) goats cheese roulade (v), mackerel or chicken liver pate, panisses (vegan), pissaladière, a lentil salad, maybe a quiche, and of course, a cake and some sweet things. There will be a clearer plan once I know how many are coming. We will then go and taste them in the dining room or upstairs while admiring the view. If it's a beautiful day, we could go and enjoy it at Mudchute Farm. The event is free in itself, but I will charge for the ingredients. It should not exceed £15/ person. Please note, the event will only run if there are at least 3 people coming, and I will send you a payment link to be paid before attending. We will cook together (in French of course) in our beautiful 56th floor kitchen, and then we will share and chitchat together in French and you can take some home if there are any left! (bring tupperware) You are welcome to bring a drink if you like, we have glasses and everything necessary, although if we go to the farm, you might need to bring a drinking vessel of some sort. For extra fun, you could bring an ingredient you'd like to experiment with!! Cooking will take place from 11-3pm, and after that we'll mingle (in French still!) until you feel fully frenchified. Teenagers are welcome, but there might be too much going on for smaller children.

London’s Soho area is now famous for its nightlife, but in the 19th century was known as the “French Quarter”, since large numbers of Huguenots settled there to escape persecution in France. We will meet on Soho Square in front of the French Protestant Church. Then we will walk and allude to certain French places as French House, a Huguenot Chapel, various historical shops and we'll be ending in the West End with Notre Dame de France (where there are works of art and especially murals by Jean Cocteau). Be aware that we won't go inside the buildings. This stroll is a refreshing opportunity to find out more about the French presence in London and to speak French in an relaxed way. Welcome to Drunken Philosophy, a casual, curious, social discussion club. Come grab a drink and a seat at The Oracle. **Optional topic for this meetup: Where is everybody?** In 1950 the physicist Enrico Fermi was talking about aliens over lunch and asked a question that still has not gone away: if the universe is so vast and so old, and even a fraction of those billions of stars have planets, where is everyone? By the numbers the galaxy should be crowded with civilizations. Instead we look up and hear silence. That gap between "they should be everywhere" and "we see no one" is the Fermi Paradox. One of the most unsettling answers is the idea of a **Great Filter**: somewhere on the road from dead chemistry to a galaxy-spanning civilization, there is at least one step that is almost impossible to get past. Maybe the filter is behind us. Maybe life starting at all, or simple cells becoming complex, or intelligence ever evolving, is the freak accident, and we already cleared the hard part. Or maybe the filter is ahead of us, and advanced civilizations reliably wipe themselves out before they spread. Here is the part that messes with people. If we ever found life somewhere else, even pond scum on Mars, most people would call it the greatest discovery in history. But it might be the worst possible news. It would mean life is common, the early steps are easy, and the hard step is still in front of us. So the eerie silence overhead might actually be the best sign we could ask for. **Questions to wrestle with:** * Is it better to be alone? Would you rather we find alien life and learn we are not special, or find nothing and quietly improve our odds of surviving? * Where do you bet the filter sits, behind us or ahead of us, and why? * If it is ahead of us, what is it? Nuclear war, climate collapse, AI, something we cannot even picture yet? And can we do anything about a filter we cannot see coming? * Two principles pull opposite ways here. The principle of mediocrity (the Copernican principle, Sagan's "no privileged place in the universe") says we are ordinary, so what happened on Earth probably happened everywhere, which makes the silence scream louder. The anthropic principle says of course we find ourselves somewhere life was possible, since we could not observe anything else, so our being here may say almost nothing about how common life is. Which lens do you trust, and does the silence still demand an answer once you account for observer selection? * And if we did confirm life out there and had to accept we are not special, what would that do to belief in a higher power, and would shedding (or keeping) that belief help or hurt our odds of pulling together as one species? * Does any of this change how you live, or how humanity should be spending its time and money right now?
