ABCD Reads "Interpreter of Maladies" by Jhumpa Lahiri
ABCD Reads "**Interpreter of Maladies**" by Jhumpa Lahiri, a short story collection that won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2000.
[[RESULTS](https://opavote.com/results/5165914897252352) of the poll for this event]
**:: ABOUT THE BOOK ::**
"Navigating between the Indian traditions they've inherited and the baffling new world, the characters in Jhumpa Lahiri's elegant, touching stories seek love beyond the barriers of culture and generations. In "A Temporary Matter," published in The New Yorker, a young Indian-American couple faces the heartbreak of a stillborn birth while their Boston neighborhood copes with a nightly blackout. In the title story, an interpreter guides an American family through the India of their ancestors and hears an astonishing confession. Lahiri writes with deft cultural insight reminiscent of Anita Desai and a nuanced depth that recalls Mavis Gallant." (from [Goodreads](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5439.Interpreter_of_Maladies))
"With accomplished precision and gentle eloquence, Jhumpa Lahiri traces the crosscurrents set in motion when immigrants, expatriates, and their children arrive, quite literally, at a cultural divide.
A blackout forces a young Indian American couple to make confessions that unravel their tattered domestic peace. An Indian American girl recognizes her cultural identity during a Halloween celebration while the Pakastani civil war rages on television in the background. A latchkey kid with a single working mother finds affinity with a woman from Calcutta. In the title story, an interpreter guides an American family through the India of their ancestors and hears an astonishing confession.
Imbued with the sensual details of Indian culture, these stories speak with passion and wisdom to everyone who has ever felt like a foreigner. Like the interpreter of the title story, Lahiri translates between the strict traditions of her ancestors and a baffling new world." **:: ABOUT THE EVENT ::**
You are welcome to arrive 30 minutes before the event and stay 30 minutes or longer afterward to connect with other attendees outside the book talk.
Please ensure you have read the book before attending (though finishing any book is not a barrier to participating, as long as you don't mind spoilers).
First-time attendees can join for free. If the event is full, we maintain an unofficial waitlist. Please send [Michael](https://www.meetup.com/members/55295192/) a direct message for more information, in either case.
We request a $3 contribution from regular attendees to help cover our monthly meetup costs.
**:: ABOUT OUR NEXT BOOK ::**
At the end of each event, we will ask for nominees for our next book. If you have a good one in mind, please ensure it is between 200-400 pages long, available from the Toronto Public Library, and counts as contemporary literary fiction (though these are not hard and fast rules). When enough nominees are collected, Michael will send the members a direct message with a link where you can vote.

Building Productive AI Agents: from Notion Agent to Founder-AI Execution
🚀 Join ProductTank Toronto for a night exploring how product people and founders are building **productive AI agents**—from configuring Notion agents to orchestrating systems that design, build, and ship real products.
This session is all about **execution**: how AI moves beyond experimentation into real workflows that extend your capacity and actually get things done.
If you've attended a Notion Toronto Community event before, you may already know our speakers. This time, they’re bringing their real-world AI practices to the ProductTank stage.
Featuring: [Dave Mence](https://www.linkedin.com/in/dave-mence/) and [Josh Gonsalves](https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshgonsalves94/)
## 🎤 **Dave Menceles, Program Ops Manager @ Notion**
***Quality In, Quality Out: Putting in the Human Work to Make AI Agents Shine***
**About Dave:**
Dave manages operations for a group of 120+ third-party Notion experts in one of Notion’s certified consultants programs. He leans on a handful of Notion Custom Agents to help him perform his day-to-day work that would otherwise extend way beyond his individual bandwidth.
**About his talk:**
Dave will share how his Q&A agent helps to support the members of his program with the deep program knowledge he’s imparted to the agent. He’ll also give an short guide on how to set up your own Notion Custom Agents that can work around the clock to perform helpful work on your behalf.
## **Josh Gonsalves, Founder @ Contraverse**
**AI That Builds AI: Orchestrating Agents Into a Real Product Team**
**About Josh:**
Josh is a Toronto-based founder building Formive, an AI platform for creating and sharing powerful AI tools and lead magnets without any code. His work focuses on turning AI into a leveraged system that can research, plan, build, and ship real products autonomously. He hasn’t written a single line of code. Instead, he directs AI systems that do.
**About his talk:**
Josh will break down how he uses AI coding tools like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor as a coordinated team of AI designers and engineers to build and ship a real product from scratch. He will show how Agent Skills, MCPs, and structured workflows enable these models to collaborate, handling everything from product research and planning to coding, review, bug fixing and shipping production-ready software.
This talk are especially **relevant for non-technical** founders and Product Managers. It demonstrates how you can create solid, production-ready software without being a traditional developer by directing systems instead of writing every line yourself.

Get out and explore! A brilliant spring tour awaits, and let's celebrate the coming summer.
Known as Sunnybrook Farm, situated in Leaside, it was owned by Joseph and Alice Kilgour and turned over to the City of Toronto in 1928 as a public park.
Joseph Kilgour was President of the Canada Paper Company. He and his wife purchased the property in the 1890s in the suburban fringe.
In 1933, Kilgour Memorial Gates and plaque at Wilket Creek Park were added to honour the Kilgour family. The park is a quiet oasis in the heart of the city. But it's also about treasured Canadian history and our beloved Veterans who now call Sunnybrook Hospital home.
The Kilgour family gave the land for a hospital to be erected while the old veterans centre on Christie Street was literally falling apart. That's the way to treat the Veterans who fought for our freedom, put them in a cold, wet hospital to recover, way to go I must say!
This walking tour is for all walking levels and fitness skills, however there are a few small hills. Please dress for the season and bring water. And remember to bring your love of history as well. Hope to see you there.
This walking tour begins and ends at the main entrance of Edwards Gardens, 755 Lawrence Ave East, adjacent to the Lawrence Avenue TTC bus stop and parking lot!
This tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person!

Urban Canvas Walk and drinks later!
Join us for a relaxed and colourful walk along Toronto’s famous Graffiti Street, where art quite literally lives on the walls. This stretch of vibrant laneways has evolved into one of the city’s most photographed spots, showcasing artworks created by talented local and international artists.
The area is often associated with Graffiti Alley, about a kilometre stretch near Queen Street West that has become an iconic destination for street art lovers. What makes this space unique is that much of the artwork here is legal. Artists typically receive permission from building owners, transforming what was once seen as graffiti into respected urban murals.
Whether you love photography, art, or simply exploring hidden gems in the city, this is a perfect way to spend time outdoors and experience a different side of Toronto.
We’ll stroll, pause to admire the murals, and enjoy the colourful atmosphere together and then head to a bar to argue which one was the coolest!

Prompt vs. Paintbrush
AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s?
This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation?
We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee.
Whether you’re deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus.
