50th Annual New Year's Day Hike on C&O Canal Towpath (easy)
50th Annual New Year's Day Hike on C&O Canal Towpath (easy)
Hikers (and non) will continue a long tradition (since 1975) by gathering in Georgetown on January 1 to kick off a new year of hiking! Come join old and new friends in ushering in the New Year, while working off some of the holiday cheer that's starting to show. Leashed pets are also welcome. Photo albums of previous hikes: **[bit.ly/MWS-NYDH](https://bit.ly/MWS-NYDH)**. **THE HIKE:** We’ll walk 5.1 miles along the C&O Canal Towpath to the Little Falls Pump Station, and back. You can walk at your own pace and turn around sooner (or later) if you want to do less (or more) than 10.1 miles. A handout (to download or print) for the hike is posted [here](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TQq9zJqpQUVFCVq0pzi_HQQYvE5GCSuD/view?usp=drive_link) and as a photo below. **LEADERS:** Frank Wodarczyk, Paul Elliot, Gabriele Ludwig, & Mike Darzi. **WHAT TO BRING:** Bring snacks or a bag lunch, and water. Dress warmly in layers and wear rain/snow gear or bring an umbrella if there is a chance of precipitation. Feel free to bring leftover holidays treats to share. **WHEN & WHERE:** We’ll meet at 10 am on the west side of Wisconsin Avenue, NW, south of M Street. There is a small plaza in front of the [Pinstripes Bistro](https://www.google.com/maps/dir//38.904376,-77.062848/@38.904049,-77.0642193,17.78z?hl=en) (1064 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, DC) that is next to and above the C&O Canal. If there is no crowd there, start one. Note that street parking is conveniently free on New Year’s Day. **LUNCH:** If you are so inclined, you may also join some of us for après-hike fare at [Pinstripes Bistro](https://pinstripes.com/georgetown/) (where we start and finish the hike) starting at 1:30-1:45 pm. **SIERRA CLUB** You may join the Sierra Club by clicking the "JOIN" button at the top of the Virginia Chapter’s [website](http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia). First Day Hike - Sneak Peak of AMC 150 Relay 1st segment
First Day Hike - Sneak Peak of AMC 150 Relay 1st segment
Kick off the new year with a First Day Hike! The goal of a First Day Hike is to begin the new year with intention to get outside more! This is also the first hike of a step/progression series that builds up to the AMC 150 Relay segment scheduled for 3/29/26. That relay segment is 8.3 miles. This first hike is four miles in length (out and back). It’s a flat rail trail on a section of the WB&A Trail, so it is rated as easy. If you are recuperating from injury, got busy with work and family, or otherwise feel the need to get in hiking readiness for the year ahead, this hike is a great place to start. Feel free to join with no commitment to doing the relay segment or any other hike in this series. The WB&A Trail is a converted rail-trail, converted from an electric commuter railway that served Washington, DC, Baltimore, and Annapolis. The trail winds its way between Prince Georges County and Anne Arundel County, offering a mix of woods, water, and residential communities along the asphalt path. A bridge across the Patuxent River was completed in Spring 2025, now linking Prince George’s County and Anne Arundel County. (We will not see the bridge on this 4-mile hike.) The trail offers a peek behind the curtain of suburbia, with marshy wetlands, woods, bridges and tunnels, along with some trail sections that pass through residential neighborhoods and some road crossings. Participants should expect a mostly relaxed walk with little elevation. Note: As of December 2025, no bathroom facilities are available for the 4-mile hike, so careful with that coffee consumption in the morning! There are gas stations out on the main roads so on your way to the parking lot, stop in for a bio break. A bit about the AMC 150 Relay: it’s to celebrate AMC’s 150th Birthday! From March to October, volunteers from AMC are offering events galore—a succession of hikes and other outdoor activities from Virginia to Maine, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the organization’s founding in 1876. Though historically rooted in New England, over time AMC has expanded and established regional chapters through the Mid-Atlantic, including today’s host, the Potomac Chapter. We will meet at the parking lot located at Electric Avenue, Glenn Dale, MD. No dogs. All participants must register individually for the hike at [https://activities.outdoors.org](https://activities.outdoors.org/) so that the waiver is signed and an emergency contact is provided.
Zorba's Cafe near the Dupont Circle
Zorba's Cafe near the Dupont Circle
Zorba's Cafe on Thursdays! We will be on the 2nd floor, or if the weather allows, we will be sitting outside at a table in the street. If you don't see anyone on the 2nd floor and the weather is favorable, it means we're sitting at the table in the street. Welcome to the old venue! Old - since we used to get together at Zorba's Cafe for many years. Come to the 2nd floor. 1612 20th St NW, Washington, DC 20009 This is very close to Metro Dupont Circle station. This is the same place where we got together every Thursday evening for many years before 2015. Everyone is welcome, but please keep conversation in Russian only. For many of us, this is our only chance to practice our Russian. There are happy hour prices available. Timing: Someone is usually there by 5:30, but it sometimes takes the organizers till 5:45 or so. If you get there first, please wait - we will be there! And people are usually there till at least 8. So if you can't make it right at the beginning, that is perfectly fine to arrive late! RSVP's: I encourage you to RSVP. But please know that many people don't RSVP. So it may seem like only 3 people are planning to attend, but have no fear, we usually have a good-sized fun group! (And we almost always have newcomers. So if you are planning on coming for the first time, you most likely won't be the only one.) Also, when the weather is nice we are frequently sitting outdoors. So if nobody is on the second floor, just look for the group speaking Russian at tables out on the street. And to say again - we have often had only 3 or 4 people RSVP but have 15 or so show up. So don't worry about that. See you there! Questions? Check our FAQ (http://www.meetup.com/russki-razgovor-dc/pages/Frequently_Asked_Questions/) page.

Every Samoyed enthusiast is welcome! **The event will happen -- regardless of the weather. **Our Samoyeds are winter weatherproof! We encourage the wearing of jingle bells on the dogs and other festive attire! The food kiosks on the Mall should be open and they serve hot beverages. Parking around the Capitol Reflecting Pool is free and should be plentiful during the morning. __P.S. Please do not bring Flexi-leashes_, they don't work well with a large group of dogs. Thanks!

Discover the DC Boundary Stones in Virginia – Next 7 Stones
Discover the DC Boundary Stones in Virginia – Next 7 Stones
Did you know Alexandria and Arlington were once part of the District of Columbia? Join us for the second hike along a portion of the former boundary line between the nation’s capital and Virginia. Discover why this area was included in the Federal City and why it was retroceded to Virginia in 1846. See stones placed every mile along the boundary survey line in 1791; all on this hike are original stones, though 2 are only visible from a distance as they are in private backyards and a third one cannot be seen from the street (but we will show you the location). These stones are the first federal monuments in the nation’s capital. This urban hike will be mostly along sidewalks; total distance is approx. 9.5 miles with about 670 feet of total elevation gain. We’ll meet at Southwest #7 Boundary Stone in the parking lot of Carlin Springs Elementary School, 5995 5th Road S, Arlington, VA 22204 by 9:30 AM. We’ll do a car shuttle to place most vehicles at the end point of the hike. Then we’ll hike to the Bluemont Park public restrooms and continue along the southwest line to the West cornerstone. From there, we’ll hike along the northwest line to the Northwest #3 Boundary Stone. At the end of the hike, we’ll consume our bag lunches in a park with a porta-john. Bring water, lunch or snacks, and dress for the weather. Sun protection (such as hat & sunglasses) is recommended if the weather is sunny or partly sunny. Restroom opportunities along the route are limited. All participants must sign a liability waiver at the start. SCPRO requests a voluntary donation of $2 per person to help support our all-volunteer program. Leaders are Russ Norfleet & Gary Kosciusko.
· The Aeronauts · by Tom Harper @ Duncan Library
· The Aeronauts · by Tom Harper @ Duncan Library
Oddball Cinema is pleased to begin a series of Oddball Adventures at James Duncan Library: movies that take the viewer into strange and unexpected places, some real, some imaginary. With a few liberties taken by the writers for dramatic effect, our first feature is based on actual events. In 1862 a young scientist (who would establish the field of meteorology) ascends in a balloon to study the upper atmosphere. Although his pilot on the historic flight was a man, in this feature the pilot is a woman based largely on a professional French balloonist of the era. As the two of them soar to an altitude never before attained, they face unexpected hazards and must resort to heroic measures to survive. The actual flight takes a little more than an hour, and once it begins, it is presented in real time. ■ Title — *The Aeronauts* ■ Director — Tom Harper ■ Cast — Felicity Jones, Eddie Redmayne, Himesh Patel ■ Rating — PG-13 ■ ©2019 \| 1h 40m \| Action\, Adventure\, Comedy\, Drama\, Romance

Our January program is privileged to have Kristen Tregar as our speaker. Ms. Tregar is the co-author with John de Lancie (the actor who portrayed the character Q on Star Trek next generation) of a radio play depicting the events surrounding the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial. The trial decided the issue of some of the Dover school district board members attempting to insert creationism disguised as "intelligent design" into the 9th grade biology curriculum. She will discuss the trial and the process of writing the play. (Bob Leonhard has seen the play and it is riveting and tense). Ms. Tregar's bio is below: Kristen Tregar is a dramaturg, director, playwright, and theatre teacher. She earned her Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre from the UC San Diego and UC Irvine joint program. In addition, she has a MS in Forensic Science from City University of New York- John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a MA in Educational Theatre from New York University- Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. In 2013, in collaboration with Irish colleagues, she founded *The Ireland Project*, an intercontinental devised theatre work with high school students in New York and Tallaght, Ireland. Her original short story "Far From Here" was recently published in *Stay Awhile Longer: More Scenes From Temecula Valley*. She has two rescued dogs (Kira and Harry) and she rides, competes, and foxhunts with her horses, Andromache and Baker Street Irregular. Food and drinks will be provided at the event.
