Hi and welcome to our next Socrates Café philosophy meetup! Do you have a hunger for deeper understanding of yourself and the world? Do you value deep, honest and respectful dialogue? If yes, then this meetup will be very interesting for you. • WHAT IS A MEETUP ABOUT? We ask, answer and discuss questions and ideas to stimulate critical thinking and to widen our perspectives with new concepts and thoughts. The main purpose of these meetups is to enrich ourselves with the perspectives of others, not to convince others about our own perspectives. Our meetups are about our own philosophies of life and not necessarily what the great philosophers and academics have said or written. It is not a debating club or a platform for proselytizing. Instead, we place the emphasis on questioning, open mindedness and challenging our own assumptions while listening to and respecting the views shared by others. A Socrates Café meetup is considered a success when participants leave a discussion with many more questions than they had at the beginning. • WHAT TOPIC IS DISCUSSED AT THE MEETUP? Participants suggest topics at the beginning of each meeting. We then vote and choose that event's most popular topic for discussion. No academic training in philosophy necessary; just enthusiasm for exchanging ideas and points of view. Some examples of subjects chosen on previous meetups: * What ideals are worth dying for? * Why are we never satisfied? * Why is it that human beings know that the society is going wrong, leaders are well informed about it and things continue as is? * Is identity necessary? * How can it be that people in democratic societies are so obsessed with power? Our events gather people from different backgrounds, different cultures, while no philosophical background is mandatory. Make friends and play games! The evening begins at 19:45 where participants will meet, sign in, and grab a beverage. At 20:00, we will have a focused, 1-hour workshop on one aspect of improvisation (e.g. characters, cooperation, physicality). We'll then have a short break followed by an improv jam at 21:15. No experience is necessary to play in the jam and it's okay to just watch. Don't mind the attendance numbers. Our regular attendees just show up and don't RSVP here. Usual attendance is 8-10 for the workshop and 10-15 for the jam. Come for the workshop or the jam, all are welcome on this island of misfit toys. Both events are donation based.

Curso de Filosofía de la ecología humana Las raíces de la transformación humana ¿Qué entendemos por Creación Política? ¿Es una transformación radical? ¿Qué posibilidades tenemos los seres humanos de transformarnos de forma autónoma y en qué sentido podemos hacerlo de forma radical a nivel político? Esta clase de filosofía de la ecología humana pretende responder a estas y otras preguntas, planteando a los participantes nuevas e importantes cuestiones sobre nuestras posibilidades reales e impensadas de autotransformación. Será un recorrido crítico y problemático por algunas de las teorías, ideas y filosofías contemporáneas más relevantes que han puesto de relieve la importancia de la transformación radical, en una época de grandes cambios científicos, políticos y sociales. **(CASTELLANO a continuación 🦀 ENGLISH below )** Avui descobrirem **una de les rutes més espectaculars de la Costa Brava, al cor del Cap de Creus**. Començarem el dia amb un cafè a Cadaqués, un dels pobles més bonics del Mediterrani, abans d’endinsar-nos en un paisatge salvatge que va captivar Salvador Dalí. Al llarg de **14km i 380 m de desnivell**, descobrirem indrets únics com el Paratge de Tudela, el far de Cap de Creus, la Cova de l’Infern i diverses cales amagades on podrem banyar-nos i relaxar-nos. Acabarem la ruta a **Port-Lligat amb un gelat davant la casa de Dalí…** i potser un últim bany abans de tornar a casa amb energies renovades. ❤️ **Ens espera un dia inoblidable... We’ll start the day with a coffee in Cadaqués, one of the most beautiful villages in the Mediterranean, before heading into a wild landscape that inspired Salvador Dalí. Over 13 km with 350 m of elevation gain, we’ll explore unique spots such as the Tudela area, the Cap de Creus lighthouse, the “Cave of Hell,” and several hidden coves where we can swim and relax. We’ll finish the route in Port-Lligat with an ice cream in front of Dalí’s house… and maybe one last swim before heading back feeling refreshed and recharged. ❤️ **Ready for a magical hike? When judging morality, should we prioritize **intentions/duty** or **outcomes/results**? It introduces two influential philosophers as representatives of these approaches. * **Immanuel Kant (deontology):** An action is moral when it is done from **duty** and follows rational, universal principles (the **categorical imperative**). Certain acts—like lying—are wrong regardless of the consequences; you can’t do a wrong thing for a right reason. * **John Stuart Mill (utilitarian consequentialism):** The morality of an action is determined by its **effects**, specifically how much **happiness/well-being** it produces. Mill argues that some pleasures are “higher” than others, and that good intentions don’t redeem harmful outcomes. ## Discussion Questions 1. **The lying dilemma:** A murderer comes to your door and asks if your friend is hiding inside. Kant would say you must not lie. 2. **Can good intentions rescue a bad outcome?** 3. **The organ harvest problem:** A surgeon has five patients dying of organ failure and one healthy patient in for a checkup. Killing the one to harvest organs would save five lives, and the math works out for the utilitarian. Why does this feel so deeply wrong? Is that feeling a point in Kant's favor, or just a bias we should overcome? 4. **Do rules need exceptions?** Kant insists moral rules must be universal, with no exceptions. But most of us can imagine extreme scenarios where any rule seems like it should bend. Does the need for exceptions fatally undermine deontology, or is the strength of the system precisely that it refuses to bend? 5. **Who gets to calculate the consequences?** Utilitarianism asks us to maximize good outcomes, but we're notoriously bad at predicting consequences. If we can't reliably know the results of our actions, is it practical to base our entire moral system on outcomes? Does this uncertainty push us back toward rules and principles? 6. **Everyday morality:** Think about a real moral decision you've made recently, even a small one. Did you reason more like a Kantian (what's the right thing to do in principle?) or more like a utilitarian (what will produce the best result?)? Do most people naturally lean one way? 7. **Justice vs. the greater good:** A town can prevent a deadly plague by sacrificing one innocent person. The greater good is clearly served. But is it just? Can an action be morally right and deeply unjust at the same time? 8. **The big synthesis question:** Are these two systems actually opposed, or do they often arrive at the same answers by different paths? Is it possible that we need both: rules to guide us in the moment and consequences to evaluate systems and policies over time?
