Punch Needle - only in Zürich
Punch Needle - only in Zürich
**Kawaii Punch Needle Workshop** In this Punch Needle workshop, you'll transform simple threads into unique works of art. Punch Needle is a modern yet relaxing embroidery technique where loops are created in the fabric using a special needle. This results in textured, soft surfaces and impressive patterns. This workshop offers the perfect opportunity to learn Punch Needle or to bring your creative ideas to life – no prior experience necessary. At the beginning of the Punch Needle workshop, you'll receive an introduction to the basics of the technique . I'll explain step by step how the punch needle works, which materials are used, and what you should pay attention to while stitching. You'll learn how to guide the thread correctly, create even loops, and neatly execute your design. The calm, repetitive movement of punch needle is particularly relaxing and perfect for unwinding from everyday life. In the workshop, you have two creative options to choose from. The first option is to select an **existing template** . These designs are especially suitable for beginners and guide you step-by-step through the embroidery process. You can concentrate fully on the technique and learn how to create a punch needle artwork from start to finish. The second option is for those who want to unleash their own creativity. You can **design your own pattern** and then embroider it yourself. Whether simple shapes, patterns, lettering, or a free-form motif – you decide what you want to create. Here, too, you will receive individual guidance and support in planning and executing your design. Throughout the entire Punch Needle workshop, you will receive personal, step-by-step guidance . It's important to me that all participants feel comfortable and can work without pressure. Questions are always welcome, and I'll help you find solutions if something doesn't work right away. The goal is to work with enjoyment and create a result you can be proud of. All materials are included in the workshop . You'll receive the punch needle, fabric, frame, and a selection of threads in various colors. You don't need to bring anything except your creativity and enthusiasm for crafting. At the end of the workshop, you'll take your hand-stitched artwork home – ideal as a decoration or a personal gift. **How long?** **Max 2 hours, come anytime between 14:00 and 20:00. Please message me if you are coming any time after 14:00.** **For whom?** The Punch Needle Workshop is **suitable for everyone** . Both children and adults are welcome. The course is aimed at beginners, but creative people with some experience can also gather new ideas and refine their technique. Punch Needle is easy to learn and offers quick results, which makes the workshop particularly motivating. If you feel like trying something new, unwinding creatively and creating a work of art with your hands, this Punch Needle Workshop is just right for you.
cuTile and TileIR: The next step in GPU Programming
cuTile and TileIR: The next step in GPU Programming
After a long hiatus of the compiler social, Lorenzo is joining us to talk about the exciting work happening at NVIDIA that you have probably heard about, namely cuTile/TileIR. As usual there will be pizza, snacks, beer, and soft drinks after the event for participants, sponsored by NVIDIA. **Astract:** GPU programming has evolved significantly over the past decade, driven by rapid hardware innovation such as Tensor Cores and new numerical formats. However, the gap between high-level productivity frameworks and low-level performance-centric programming models continues to widen. In this talk, we introduce cuTile and TileIR, a new block-level programming model and intermediate representation designed to simplify high-performance GPU development while preserving forward compatibility with evolving NVIDIA architectures. cuTile provides a tile-centric abstraction for data-parallel workloads, accessible from Python, while TileIR—an MLIR-based low-level IR integrated with CUDA—offers a stable, portable foundation for targeting tensor cores and future hardware generations. Together, they establish a middle ground between usability and control, enabling expressive kernel development without sacrificing performance. We present the programming model, illustrate it with examples, discuss performance considerations, and, if time permits, take a deeper dive into the core abstractions behind TileIR: https://github.com/NVIDIA/cuda-tile **Location:** The event is taking place in the room G61 in the CAB building of ETH Zurich at the Zentrum campus. Enter from Universitätstrasse 6.

Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk. Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association: They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other church–state issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEA’s early wins and hard lessons, what we’re seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape — and practical ways to get involved. Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. SCHEDULE: 12:00 - quick intros. 12:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 1:10 - chat / take off / keep writing. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 1-1:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer. Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you! • What to bring Whatever you need to be able to write! Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block noise or the occasional conversation by other patrons. Electrical outlets are limited, so charge your devices before whenever possible. See you at The Café on Sunday!
