BECKENHAM & BROMLEY MYN VIRTUAL PUB EVENING
We hold two pub evenings a month on the first and third Wednesdays, with all the other Wednesdays being virtual pub evenings. We also normally have a monthly quiz on the last Wednesday of the month, during the virtual pub evening, at about 9pm, where a different member of our group prepares the questions to be used each month.
This means that tonight is a virtual pub evening but incorporating a quiz.
Contact Roland in advance, preferably by e-mail, so that he can send you a link to click on at the start of the meeting. Please note the different arrangements for the first and third Wednesdays of the month.
Great Pub Conversations @ Clapham Common
Join us in the evening for a drink at **Old Town Tavern**. This social gathering is the perfect opportunity to unwind and to connect with friends - new and old. All ages welcome.
I will update the group discussion with which table we're at. Cheers!
SOLD OUT • TEiP DEEP: A small group, deep dive into a single Thought Experiment
A **smaller, quieter, and less rushed** edition of THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS.
At TEiP DEEP, we have the chance to spend a whole hour and a half on **one thought experiment**, exploring different perspectives, coming up with new questions, listening and learning from one another.
**How it works:**
\- We split into small groups for each chapter of the thought experiment \(3\-4\)\.
\- We shuffle every 25 mins to meet new people and change things up\.
\- And at the end we'll have a brief group reflection\, sharing ideas and insights \- this will be lightly facilitated to ensure that everyone has a chance to speak if they want to \(no pressure\)\.
Some simple ground rules to keep our conversation the best it can be:
* respect for one another’s perspectives, beliefs, time (etc.)
* confidentiality of personal stories
* own your perspective
* you don’t have to talk if you don’t want to.
Our aim is the same as our bigger Thought Experiments in Pubs meetups: **a chance to meet and talk at about meaningful, thought provoking things**.
Although we’ll be going a bit ‘deeper’, we’ll keep the intention to have an enjoyable evening, with good humour and fun.
Places are limited to 15-20 people and tickets are £5.
Please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend so that someone else can have your place.
**Who should come:**
Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality...etc. etc....
**Where we'll meet:**
The Fitzroy Tavern in Fitzrovia. The nearest Tube stations are Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road.
Looking forward to meeting & talking with you :-)

Borough / Bermondsey – New (Old) Pubs Crawl
**Please note that the location for the start of the MeetUp is still using the pub's former name of The Blue Eyed Maid rather than the new, more succinct The Blue Maid.**
Now I don’t know about everyone else, but I’ve certainly reached that point in life where I value the warmth and comforts of a proper pub, rather than the latest tap-room inside yet another railway arch, or on some nondescript industrial estate in the far-flung reaches of capital.
I yearn for a seat with back support, at a proper table, not one of those silly communal trestle tables. I’d like to sit inside a real old building with history and character, not on a wooden bench crammed in next to a row of fermentation vessels. Oh, and don’t get me started on the delights of using a proper toilet!
With this in mind, we will be visiting two grand old pubs that have reopened recently and have been returned to their former glories, both with a fine selection of craft beer. These will bookend the crawl, with another wonderful pub that has recently come under new management in the middle.
We will aim to spend around 90 minutes at each boozer, the whole route is about a fifteen minute walk, however stops #2 and #3 are conveniently very close to one another. As some of the pubs aren’t huge inside we will cap the capacity of the MeetUp. There are large outdoor seating areas at The Blue Maid and The Hand & Marigold, so hopefully the weather will be kind to us.
**The Blue Maid (173 Borough High St, London SE1 1HR) (2pm – 3:30pm)**
Having closed in 2020, this pub was rescued and re-opened (sadly minus the famous jukebox) in April 2025. There is a wide range of keg beers along with cask available. Expect to see beers from Kernel, DEYA, Five Points, Unbarred and many more.
**Simon The Tanner (231 Long Ln, London SE1 4PR) (3:45pm – 5:15pm)**
This was formerly part of the Mother Kelly’s group but is now under new management. The dry run of the crawl revealed the pub to be cosy, inviting and with excellent service from very welcoming bar staff. A good range of beers available across keg and cask, we had beers from Polly’s and Siren on our last visit. The back room of the pub now seems to have been styled as a sort of vintage listening bar, with DJ’s and music on Sundays.
**Hand & Marigold Free House (244 Bermondsey St, London SE1 3UH) (5:20pm-7:00pm)**
Another victim of the Covid pandemic, this pub first opened in 1793 but has been restored and fabulously refurbished for the reopening in early 2025. There is an excellent snacks menu and also a brilliantly curated tap list, which includes classic lagers, IPA’s and O’Haras Irish stout, as well as beers from local breweries (such as Villages) and from further afield, such as New York’s Finback and Other Half.
There are options for an after-party should anyone be interested / inebriated enough - we will be a 10 minute walk back to the Beer Mile, for instance.
Prison Breakout: Pub Crawl Hunt | London 20s and 30s
**The chase is on again... as on Friday 27th February, we'll be heading into Central London for our latest "Prison Breakout" Pub Crawl Hunt.**
For those who've not been to one of our events powered by the **[Chicken Rush app](https://chickenru.sh/)** \- this event can best be described as a fun hybrid of a pub crawl\, a scavenger hunt and a giant game of hide and seek\.
The aim of the game is very simple: you’ll have just under two hours to **find an** **escaped prisoner, hiding in a top secret pub in London.**
With the help of a circle around the prisoner's approximate location, that shrinks every 2 minutes - you’ll need to race in teams and go pub to pub to hunt the prisoner down.
The first three teams to successfully find the prisoner earning a lion share of the points available.
**But there's a couple of plot twists!**
If you enter a pub that doesn't house the escaped prisoner - at least two members of your team will have to buy a drink!
And this is not just a simple race to find the prisoner - as we've also prepared a series of fun tasks and challenges that you can complete on the way to earn additional points.
**The team with the most points by the end of time will be crowned the winners.**
It's always great fun and widely considered one of the best events we’ve done and so do join us if you weren’t able to last time.

SOLD OUT • BATTERSEA: HAWKINS FORGE • HAPPINESS | Thought Experiments in Pubs
A special theme for our pilot event at HAWKINS FORGE in Battersea: **HAPPINESS**
I'm so excited to bring THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS to this new venue. The pub staff reached out because they'd seen TEiP elsewhere and thought we'd be at at home at Hawkins Forge. From the moment I walked into the pub I could see why. It embodies our values: warm, welcoming, convivial, and a home to deep thinkers. I can't wait for you to join us there.
The pub has boardgames and cards for the after party, and they’ve also **kindly offered us a deal on their Arrowsmiths Darts experience**: 30 minutes free for anyone who buys a drink.
**This episode of TEiP will explore the theme 'HAPPINESS'** by way of three thought experiments, which I will post in the comments on the day.
Spaces are limited, so get your ticket early if you want to be there 😊
**THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS** \- announced on the day of the event
**[WHATSAPP GROUP](https://chat.whatsapp.com/DapwAXpnOHO5DRYThobpe4)** \- stay in the loop

**[SUBSTACK](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/)** \- sign up for the newsletter and more
**The idea:** A chance to meet and talk at a 'deeper' level than 'small talk'.
**How we'll do it** (timings approximate):
* 7:00pm - Arrive at Hawkins Forge. We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us.
* Organise ourselves into small groups (3-4)
* Have a look at the **thought experiments** (announced on the day of the event)
* 7:15 - First rotation begins - Talk about the first thought experiment, but feel free to pursue tangents and anecdotes.
* 7:35 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the second thought experiment.
* 8:00 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the third thought experiment.
* 8:25pm - Wrap up - hear about upcoming events, feedback/requests for future meetups.
* 8:30 Meetup ‘ends’. But feel free to carry on conversations. Usually a lot of us stay until late :-)
**Notes on the general atmosphere**:
* The vibe is to let conversation flow rather than stick strictly to one topic.
* While we'd like to talk about 'meaningful things', we also see the value in lighter topics, so don't worry about not being 'deep' enough!
* Feel free to suggest ideas for future Thought Experiments in Pubs meetup groups, both in terms of structure and topics to discuss.
**Where we'll meet**:
This group will be at Hawkins Forge, 5 minutes walk from Clapham Junction. We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us.
**Who should come**:
Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality... etc....
I'm so looking forward to meeting & talking with you in this beautiful location :-)

Board games at The Forge
The Forge does have a full bar and kitchen. There is no cover charge but they do request all attendees to purchase a minimum of ~$20 per person. Soft drink refills are $1 each. Please support our hosts so we can continue to provide great events for the group!
The Forge has a large library of games available for us to enjoy. Hosts and regulars will also provide numerous popular games but please bring any games you would like to teach and/or play.
Doors open at 6, and we expect gaming to be rolling by around 630. Please promptly end your games and clear out the space at 10pm when the bar closes.
We encourage socializing but do not permit disruptive behavior of any kind. Thank you for your continued commitment to providing a fun and welcoming space to veteran, newbie, and rookie gamers in the Columbus area.
Parking can be challenging. There is a parking lot behind the neighboring Mexican restaurant that is free and easy to walk from but it's a bit hidden.
St Patricks Day Party at an Irish Pub!
**This is the biggest party in town!** ***Come help us enjoy the luckiest day of the year!*** The Irish Pub and outside overflow tent have Irish Beer, Whiskey and Food. Inside the giant tent the best local Irish bands perform while Irish dancers parade by and the Columbus fife and drum invade each late afternoon. **COVER CHARGE: $20.00**
**4pm** - [Drowsy Lads](http://www.thedrowsylads.com/) Named as “The Best Irish-American Band” the 20 year performing veterans have galvanized their place amongst Irish and folk music’s must see acts. You’ll have a blast… and the band will be arm in arm beside you!
**7pm** \- Ladies of Langford
Since 1995, [Byrne’s Pub](https://byrnespub.com/) has served as a Grandview hub for all things Irish. In fact, co-owner Pat Byrne even operates a line of craft Irish whiskey, known as Bua. The Grandview Spot is also a huge patron of both Celtic music and bluegrass, as live musical guests from both genres perform at Byrne’s on the regular.
Sunday Board Games at Land-Grant Brewing
We'll play board games at the [Land-Grant Brewing Company](https://landgrantbrewing.com/). The brewery has multiple [food trucks](https://landgrantbrewing.com/food/) on Sundays, including [Ray Ray's Hog Pit](https://rayrayshogpit.com/franklinton), [Buck City Sammies](https://www.buckcitysammies.com/menu), and [Hai Poké](https://www.haipokefoodtruck.com/).
The brewery also has (passable) drip coffee, free water, and Jeni's ice cream. You can also walk over to the [Land Grant Extension](https://callinyourbluffcoffee.com/) for "real" coffee. (You may have to stand in line, though. The Extension is popular.)
You can come late or leave early. Please just sign up so I know to expect you.
**Notes on Parking**
* You'll (probably) have to park on the street, but street parking is free on Sundays.
* There are [parking garages](https://landgrantbrewing.com/parking/) a little farther away if you want. These are obviously not free, though.
* There is a [lot next door](https://www.google.com/maps/place/39%C2%B057'26.0%22N+83%C2%B000'40.9%22W/@39.957211,-83.0119921,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m12!1m7!3m6!1s0x88388f3efd89238b:0xc139207386232411!2sLand-Grant+Brewing+Company!8m2!3d39.9577613!4d-83.011426!16s%2Fg%2F1pzt7t9df!3m3!8m2!3d39.957211!4d-83.011347?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDEyMS4wIKXMDSoKLDEwMDc5MjA3MUgBUAM%3D) to the brewery that you're allowed to park in, but it is not free. I've never parked there, so I don't know anything about rates. (I'm told though that if you eat at Milo's Deli next door to this lot that Milo's will stamp your parking so it's free.)
* You're going to see odd signs on [Lucas St](https://www.google.com/maps/place/39%C2%B057'26.1%22N+83%C2%B000'40.3%22W/@39.957256,-83.0124134,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m10!1m5!3m4!2zMznCsDU3JzI4LjgiTiA4M8KwMDAnNDEuNSJX!8m2!3d39.957993!4d-83.011536!3m3!8m2!3d39.957256!4d-83.011197?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDEyMS4wIKXMDSoKLDEwMDc5MjA3MUgBUAM%3D) (saying it's a "private street") that will lead you to believe you're not allowed to park there, but you actually are.
* Columbus parking cops literally do not work on Sundays. This means that, even if you're driving a non-EV, you can park in the EV spots near the brewery.
**Games**
I do bring many games, but please bring some of your own as well.
