Puzzled Pint
UPDATE JULY 2021
Puzzled Pint Washington DC-City/Arlington is going back to live events starting July 2021. Our Fairfax chapter is still on hiatus until further notice.
Love solving puzzles?...with friends?...while eating and drinking?
Join us for Puzzled Pint in Washington DC, Arlington, or Fairfax County!
http://www.puzzledpint.com/
Puzzled Pint is a casual, social puzzle solving event which happens at bars/pubs on the second Tuesday of every month in multiple cities around the world. The Friday before each event, they post a location puzzle to the web site. The solution to that puzzle will lead you to a local pub/bar/restaurant. There are two locations in Northern Virginia, one in Arlington (sometimes in DC proper) and one in the Fairfax area. Hints will be available on the site for the location puzzle.
On the night of the event, show up at the specified pub. We'll have more puzzles for you to solve while you enjoy drinks and food. Most teams take between 30 minutes and 2 hours to solve a typical puzzle set. We, "Game Control", will be on hand to give hints and verify answers.
All Puzzled Pint events are free to attend.
Puzzled Pint players solve puzzles for fun — there are no prizes.
Teams are encouraged — solving is more fun with friends!
You may use this meetup as a forum to try and put a team together or you may show up the night of and pick a random table of people to join.
*Please note we are not responsible for putting teams together.
Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: The Secrets of Runes
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“The Secrets of Runes,”** on the origins, development, and interpretation of the runic script, with Lilla Kopár, runologist and a professor of medieval literature and culture at Catholic University.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-rune-secrets](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-rune-secrets) .]
The fame of runes outshines that of any other ancient script. They can be found not just on Viking Age rune stones, but on Bilbo’s door and as the Bluetooth logo on your cell phone. Runic script is commonly associated with magic, used by modern practitioners of neopaganism, and in recent decades has captured the imagination of filmmakers and video game designers.
Yet most of us know little about the historical origins of runes and have no clue how to read or use them.
Come to Crooked Run Fermentation in Sterling, Va., to get schooled on runic script with the help of Lilla Kopár, a veteran scholar of runes who has earned a following among Profs and Pints fans by giving fantastic talks on medieval monsters and Norse mythology. As someone who has carried out extensive field research on runes, published several articles on runic objects, and even appeared on the History Channel commenting on runes in America, she’s exceptionally qualified to introduce you to runology and the fascinating things that runes tell us.
Dr Kopár will discuss the development of runic script from its humble origins on the borders of the Roman Empire in the first or second century CE, through its popularity in the Viking world, to its use and misuse in modern times. She’ll discuss how runes are a set of related alphabets that underwent changes over time and she’ll describe what inspired changes in this writing system and where and how runes were used in the medieval period.
Her richly illustrated talk will highlight some of the most intriguing objects with runic inscriptions, from humble bone fragments to impressive rune stones, and offer insight into the scholarly methods of deciphering and interpreting runic inscriptions. We’ll also look at the function of the runic script from simple practical notes and memorial inscriptions to cipher-runes and magic.
The most fun might be the in-class assignment, which will involve reading a few runic inscriptions and writing your name and other words in runes. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Puzzled Pint DC/Arlington
What can be a more geeky night out than spending an evening solving puzzles in a pub, especially after a pandemic? Yes, Puzzled Pint is returning to being in-person! See www.puzzledpint.com
This free event works like this: On the website puzzledpint.com is a puzzle. Solve it and find out where we'll be puzzling on Tuesday -- it'll be at a pub near a metro station. Go there and do free puzzle sets! The puzzle sets are meant for teams of three or four people -- if you don't have a team and want one, you can form a team here on Meetup, or the kind Puzzled Pint people will likely help.
Some notes:
-- These are "puzzle hunt" style puzzles, which have an interesting style of their own. If you are new to this kind of puzzle, DON'T PANIC when you first see the location puzzle, and don't hesitate to get hints. After all, the point is to have fun, not be frustrated!
-- Also, for new people, a basic guide is available here:
http://www.puzzledpint.com/files/3513/8254/7894/2013_10_22_Puzzling_Basics_Infographic.pdf
-- Note that this event isn’t hosted by GNO, but by Puzzled Pint. Feel free to post here to form groups etc, but don’t expect the kind Puzzled Pint Organizers to have read any messages here.
-- If people come late, they can either form their own group, or join a pre-existing group. However, since the event is designed for groups of 3 or 4 people, forming a new group will probably work out better. The 7:00 time is just when they start handing out the puzzles -- if your group wants to start later, that'll be fine
