HKPUG #99 - "Lie" to me, Python
**Details**
Date: 27 June 2026, Saturday
Time: 15:00 – 18:00 HKT
Venue: BC404, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Capacity: 40 participants
**Please make sure you fill in the google form https://forms.gle/ogJSHfruCnjHNisU6 for Poly University QR Code Access**.
**Topics**
**1\. Mind the Data Gap — Prize Ceremony & Winners’ Sharing**
Speaker: Winning teams / participants
Duration: around 15 minutes
In our previous HKPUG workshop, participants worked in teams on a messy Hong Kong-inspired synthetic transport dataset.
The data was intentionally corrupted with missing values, outliers, inconsistent categories, URL-encoded station names, confusing delimiters, and hidden signals.
Teams had to clean the data and submit their work to a fixed black-box scorer to see whether their cleaning improved model performance.
In this session, we will present the prizes and invite the winning teams / participants to share their approaches.
We will cover:
\- Prize ceremony for the workshop winners
\- How participants approached the data cleaning challenge
\- What kinds of hidden signals were found
\- Common patterns and mistakes we observed
\- What we learned from designing a gamified Python data workshop
No model tuning.
Just data rescuing.
**2\. Python "Lies": Things That Are Not What They Seem**
Speaker: Alex Au
Duration: 15 minutes
Python often reads almost like English — until it does something that is technically correct but completely different from what you expected.
In this rapid-fire talk, Alex will uncover several Python-specific “lies”: late-bound lambdas in loops, mutable default arguments that remember previous calls, nested lists that secretly share the same rows, generators that disappear after one pass, the surprising meaning of for...else, and finally blocks that can rewrite a function’s ending.
Each example begins with a short “guess the output” challenge, followed by an explanation of the Python behaviour hiding underneath.
Things are not always what they seem.
**3\. LEPAUTE Framework — FSD\-style Visual Perception with Lie Group Equivariant Attention**
Speaker: Carson
Duration: around 60 minutes
LEPAUTE is a Python-based visual perception / machine learning framework originally motivated by Tesla FSD-style autonomous driving perception.
Autonomous driving perception is not just about detecting objects in a flat image. A model needs to reason about movement, rotation, position, scale, and viewpoint changes while still understanding the same scene consistently.
In this talk, Carson will introduce the motivation behind LEPAUTE, the core technical ideas, and how Lie group equivariant attention can be applied to 2D visual perception. The session will also include a live or prepared demo.
This talk is suitable for participants interested in Python, machine learning, computer vision, autonomous driving perception, mathematical structures in AI models, and research-oriented software projects.
Note: This is an independent technical sharing and **does not imply affiliation with or endorsement by Tesla**.
**Rundown**

15:30 – 15:45 Opening and HKPUG updates

Beyond Aging: How Perception, Hypnosis, and NLP Shape Health Outcomes
🔥🧠 What if better health required less struggle and more awareness?
Discover how your perceptions, beliefs, expectations, and unconscious patterns may influence your wellbeing more than you think.
Many people assume that health and aging are determined primarily by biology. However, emerging research and practical experience suggest that perception, expectation, and mindset can significantly influence wellbeing.

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Learning from Everyday Data
**Practical Curiosity: Learning from Everyday Data**
How do we actually get better at utilizing our day-to-day data? Fancy dashboards and complex models might look nice and draw attention, but that’s not where most of us spend our time. In fact those shiny outputs frequently sit unused, while the real insights are drawn from the analyst’s daily practice.
Sometimes it’s as simple and as powerful as noticing that a segment is shrinking, a channel is underused, or certain links keep getting all the clicks. There’s many different places that the spark of insight can come from, but you have to keep your head in the data and know where to look.
In this session, we’ll explore real-world examples of how segmentation, testing, and click behavior can uncover practical digital marketing opportunities. You’ll leave with inspiration for your own use cases, along with a few simple ways to ask better questions, spot meaningful patterns, and make smarter decisions without overcomplicating it.
**About Our Speaker:**
[Elaine Armbruster](https://www.linkedin.com/in/elainearmbruster/) is a Director of Digital Experience at the [American Diabetes Association](https://diabetes.org/), where she focuses on using data and insights to create smarter, more effective digital experiences. A lifelong Columbus resident, she has built her career in email marketing and the broader digital user journey, and is finding she most enjoys working in the messy middle where systems, data, and big ideas don’t quite line up yet.

"Tusk Love" by Thea Guanzon
Come join us to discuss our July pick "Tusk Love" by Thea Guanzon!
Book description:
A merchant’s daughter who yearns for adventure gets more than she bargained for when she falls for a broodingly handsome stranger in this saucy romantasy from the New York Times bestselling author of The Hurricane Wars.
“A true delight of a book! Spicy and heartfelt—this one is a winner all around.”—Katee Robert, author of Neon Gods
As the daughter of an ambitious merchant, Guinevere’s path has been predetermined: marry into a noble house of the Dwendalian Empire, raise her family’s station, and live quietly as a lordling’s obedient wife. But Guinevere longs for a life unbounded by expectations, for freedom and passion and adventure.
Those distant dreams become a sudden reality when her caravan is beset by bandits, leaving her guards slain and Guinevere stranded alone on the dangerous Amber Road. Her only chance of survival is to travel alongside Oskar, the aloof half-orc who saved her during the attack.
Unlike Guinevere, Oskar’s path is not so set in stone. With his mother dead and his apprenticeship abandoned, all that’s left is a long, lonely walk to a land he’s never seen to find family he’s never met. The last thing he needs is a spoiled waif like Guinevere slowing him down—even if the spark between them sizzles with promise.
Despite his cold exterior, Oskar is brave and thoughtful and unlike anyone Guinevere has ever met. And while Guinevere may be sheltered, she brings out a softness in him that he has never dared to feel before. As the flames of their passion grow, they realize that soon they’ll need to choose between their expected destinations or their blossoming romance.
Written by New York Times bestselling author Thea Guanzon at the behest of Critical Role’s Jester Lavorre, Tusk Love brings the most romantic story on Exandrian bookshelves to life.
