Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. Our membership is 313,000 strong. Members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending one of the 14,650 clubs in 126 countries that make up our global network of meeting locations.
The world needs leaders. Leaders head families, coach teams, run businesses, and mentor others. These leaders must not only accomplish but must also communicate. By regularly giving speeches, gaining feedback, leading teams, and guiding others to achieve their goals in a supportive atmosphere, leaders emerge from the Toastmasters program. Every Toastmaster's journey begins with a single speech. During their journey, they learn to tell their stories. They listen and answer. They plan and lead. They give feedbackâand accept it. Through our community of learners, they find their path to leadership.
Creative Writing Budapest
**This week's venue: Beer People \| LĂĄzĂĄr utca 7\, Budapest 1065**
We hold a bi-weekly workshop to encourage creative writing where we share pieces of creative writing and solicit feedback from the other attendees.
Some members also use the forum to find others with whom to collaborate, edit work, and/or brainstorm plot, themes, settings, and so forth. And from time to time, we participate in competitions, recite and/or offer material for events organized by other groups.
At the moment there is no prompt for this particular meetup.
Instead, writers are invited to submit something they have (or are working on) or to craft a short story specifically for the event.
Of course, there's no pressure to submit something. Many participants are interested in hearing ideas, questioning the authors, and examining style and technique. Often, we explore other published works as well.
The submission guidelines are as follows:
1. limit the piece to 850 words (to give enough time for any other submissions being read at the event);
2. make the text available (though you can read it aloud) for the other attendees. Many authors bring a few printed copies, others post their work in the comments of the meetup;
3. have a question in mind for the group about the submission; and,
4. If offering something from a longer work, be prepared to give a little bit of background first.

(April) Monthly Book Club: Humble Pi by Matt Parker
Hello everyone,
Welcome to the Monthly Book Club, the discussion edition of the Budapest Silent Book Club for those who enjoy reading the same book and sharing their thoughts together.
This month, weâll be reading Humble Pi by Matt Parker a funny, surprising, and eye-opening book about what happens when maths goes wrong in the real world. From computer glitches and engineering mistakes to everyday miscalculations, the book shows how deeply our modern lives rely on numbers and how absurd the results can be when something goes slightly off.
Itâs an entertaining read that opens the door to conversations about technology, logic, human error, and the strange ways small mistakes can lead to very big consequences.
đ **Time:** 18:00â20:00 â Group discussion about the book (no silent reading hour this time)
đ **Location: Csiga Cafe**

Meditation (English)
Practice Buddhist meditation in the middle of Budapest!
The meditation is suitable for beginners. Each regular meditation is guided and begins with a short introduction. (all together is about 30-40 minutes)
Our regular Buddhist meditations have proven popular with people who want to integrate authentic Buddhist methods into their daily lives. For the modern lay person who is juggling work, relationships, and an active role in society, we teach a meditation that is easy to learn, and profound and powerful for experienced practitioners.
The meditation originates from the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. It has a cumulative effect on mind, leading to greater clarity and calmness. Fearlessness, joy, and active compassion are the result of regular practice of Buddhist meditation.
* Do I need any special clothing?
No special clothing needed.
* Does the attendance cost anything?
No, the meditation is free.

Socializing & Language exchange in budapest
Every Saturday at 8:00 PM, we gather in the city to share languages, cultures, and conversations.
[[Click this whatsapp groupchat link to join](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CrJ7hXrYgckCM0f1D4kRUZ)]
Our group is made up of friendly 20sâ30s people â locals, expats, and travelers alike â who come together to meet new people and explore different ways of thinking.
Whether youâre new to Budapest or call it home, this meetup is your chance to connect in a relaxed, open-minded space.
Join us to swap stories, practice new languages, and build genuine friendships across cultures.
The Platonic Representation Hypothesis
Humans can often move naturally between perception and language: we can look at something and describe it, or read something and form a mental picture. In machine learning, though, models for language and vision are usually trained separately, so it is easy to assume that they learn entirely different internal representations.
The Platonic Representation Hypothesis argues that this may not be true, and presents evidence that different models can converge toward similar underlying representations. In this meetup, we will walk through the paper, unpack its main ideas and results, and discuss the possible implications for how we think about intelligence, multimodal models, and the structure of learned representations.

Duty vs. Results: What Makes an Action Moral?
When judging morality, should we prioritize **intentions/duty** or **outcomes/results**? It introduces two influential philosophers as representatives of these approaches.
* **Immanuel Kant (deontology):** An action is moral when it is done from **duty** and follows rational, universal principles (the **categorical imperative**). Certain actsâlike lyingâare wrong regardless of the consequences; you canât do a wrong thing for a right reason.
* **John Stuart Mill (utilitarian consequentialism):** The morality of an action is determined by its **effects**, specifically how much **happiness/well-being** it produces. Mill argues that some pleasures are âhigherâ than others, and that good intentions donât redeem harmful outcomes.
## Discussion Questions
1. **The lying dilemma:** A murderer comes to your door and asks if your friend is hiding inside. Kant would say you must not lie.
2. **Can good intentions rescue a bad outcome?**
3. **The organ harvest problem:** A surgeon has five patients dying of organ failure and one healthy patient in for a checkup. Killing the one to harvest organs would save five lives, and the math works out for the utilitarian. Why does this feel so deeply wrong? Is that feeling a point in Kant's favor, or just a bias we should overcome?
4. **Do rules need exceptions?** Kant insists moral rules must be universal, with no exceptions. But most of us can imagine extreme scenarios where any rule seems like it should bend. Does the need for exceptions fatally undermine deontology, or is the strength of the system precisely that it refuses to bend?
5. **Who gets to calculate the consequences?** Utilitarianism asks us to maximize good outcomes, but we're notoriously bad at predicting consequences. If we can't reliably know the results of our actions, is it practical to base our entire moral system on outcomes? Does this uncertainty push us back toward rules and principles?
6. **Everyday morality:** Think about a real moral decision you've made recently, even a small one. Did you reason more like a Kantian (what's the right thing to do in principle?) or more like a utilitarian (what will produce the best result?)? Do most people naturally lean one way?
7. **Justice vs. the greater good:** A town can prevent a deadly plague by sacrificing one innocent person. The greater good is clearly served. But is it just? Can an action be morally right and deeply unjust at the same time?
8. **The big synthesis question:** Are these two systems actually opposed, or do they often arrive at the same answers by different paths? Is it possible that we need both: rules to guide us in the moment and consequences to evaluate systems and policies over time?
