Building Inclusive AI Experiences with Sign Language and GenAI
What if your phone could read your hands the way it reads your taps? Imagine making the gesture for weather and instantly hearing today's forecast, or using the sign for traffic to learn whether the road is clear - all without a keystroke. By pairing real-time gesture recognition with generative AI, we unlock a playful, inclusive interface for everyone. In this talk, you’ll see how computer-vision models, Keras, Gemini, and Firebase Genkit combine to build a sign-language-savvy mobile app.

21st BcnRust Meetup
We’re thrilled to announce the next edition of the BcnRust Meetup, this time hosted by **[Protofy](https://protofy.xyz/)**!
Join us for an evening exploring two very different but equally ambitious Rust projects: an AI-native virtual machine that rethinks how code is executed, and a distributed task queue built as a hands-on journey into async Rust, concurrency, and fault-tolerant systems. Whether you're interested in language runtimes, AI agents, distributed systems, or simply seeing how Rust enables bold ideas, this meetup is for you.
**Driver: An Agentic VM in Rust** by [Cristian Sánchez](https://www.linkedin.com/in/cr3at0r/)
Most virtual machines are deterministic by design. LLMs break that. But what if AI wasn't an external API on top, but a native execution primitive inside the VM itself?
Driver is a Rust VM where AI is a first-class execution primitive. The stdlib is aware of whether it's being invoked by deterministic bytecode or by an LLM-generated action and behaves accordingly.
We'll cover the practical decisions behind the core VM, and the toolkit around it.
**Aether: Learning Async Rust by building a Distributed Task Queue** by [Arnau Berenguer](https://www.linkedin.com/in/arnau-berenguer-jimenez/)
Building a distributed system is a great way to learn async Rust because you run into all the hard parts for real. In this talk I'll walk through Aether, a personal project of a task queue that lets you submit and run Python scripts on a cluster from a CLI. We'll cover the system architecture, how to handle multiple concurrent tasks sharing state, how to handle loss of connection, and propagating cancellation signals on concurrent tasks over the network. Along the way we'll see the honest lessons learned and what makes async Rust hard but fun.
**Why Attend?**
* Explore advanced Rust applications, from AI-native runtimes to distributed infrastructure.
* Learn practical lessons about virtual machine design, async programming, concurrency, and fault tolerance.
* Discover how experienced Rust developers approach complex systems and architectural trade-offs.
* Connect with Barcelona's Rust community and exchange ideas with fellow engineers, makers, and enthusiasts.
* Get inspired by real-world projects that push Rust beyond the usual web services and CLI tools.
Whether you're a Rust beginner curious about what's possible, or a seasoned developer looking to dive deeper into systems programming, you'll leave with new ideas, technical insights, and plenty to discuss.
Let’s build, learn, and geek out over Rust together! 🦀
**Streaming**: We will stream it via YouTube so you can also subscribe to our [YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@bcnrust) to get notified when we go live.
The rise and fall of the intellectuals
In this session, we explore the figure of the intellectual, the belletrist who rose from a position of suspicion and ridicule to become, through the written word, a force capable of defending democracy and shaping our collective moral consciousness.
Along the way, we'll consider a curious paradox: how well-written fiction in an imaginary book can profoundly shape our perception of reality, and, with it, our judgment and decisions as individuals and as a society.
Turning from fiction to fact, one historical and canonical case study will help us examine how critical thinking and the courageous intervention of intellectuals helped a society confront its own prejudices, biases, conspiracies, and fallacies, and in doing so, helped save its democracy and uphold its universal values.
We will then turn to the evolution of relentless technology, from the Belle Époque to today, to ask what has changed in the power and influence of the 'man of letters' vis-à-vis the technologies we've developed, and what risks we now face, more than ever, as cracks in our democracies widen through a consciousness increasingly compromised by shady influencers.
This talk is the second in a three-part series examining how new technologies, cultural intermediaries, and information systems shape our beliefs in subtle but consequential ways.
Each talk stands on its own and requires no prior attendance.
This session will be led by Eyal.
Bring wine/beer/drinks/food/snacks/whatever to share.

Cloud Native Barcelona OpenTelemetry #3
This is the third in a series of meetups exploring the exciting world of **[OpenTelemetry](https://opentelemetry.io/)** within the cloud-native ecosystem. And this time, we are partnering with our good friends at [Write the Docs Barcelona](https://www.meetup.com/write-the-docs-barcelona/). Whether you're just curious about observability or already a seasoned OpenTelemetry user, this series will offer valuable insights, practical knowledge, and opportunities to connect with fellow enthusiasts in the Barcelona cloud-native community.
**📍 Location:** **[Factorial](https://factorial.es)** \- Carrer de Llacuna 56\, building C\, Barcelona \| [https://maps.app.goo.gl/baTqk9H8m3ACK4jD7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/baTqk9H8m3ACK4jD7)
**👉 Here's a sneak peek of the agenda:**
**18:30:** Check-in and welcome 👋
**18:45:** 🎙️ **"Collaborating in OSS projects: The OpenTelemetry Docs case study"** by **[Anna Urbiztondo](https://www.linkedin.com/in/annaurbiztondo/)** - *Senior Technical Writer at [Grafana Labs](https://grafana.com)*, **[Fabrizio Ferri-Benedetti](https://www.linkedin.com/in/fabrizioferri/)**[ ](https://www.linkedin.com/in/fabrizioferri/)- *Principal Technical Writer* *at [Elastic](https://elastic.co)***.**
This Write the Docs meets Cloud Native talk covers what makes open-source projects succeed in practice — clear focus, community ownership, organization, goodwill, and excellent communication in a fast-moving codebase.
OpenTelemetry Documentation is a perfect example because it encompasses new, state-of-the-art concepts and spans across multiple languages and vendors. Therefore, its docs must explain workflows, implementation scenarios, deployment tools, and APIs to both newcomers and seasoned users to guarantee adoption and success.
**19:45 - 20:30:** Networking, Snacks, and Drinks 🍻🍕
We appreciate **[Factorial](https://factorial.es)**'s generosity in hosting us at their Barcelona office and to **[Grafana Labs](https://grafana.com)** for providing snacks & refreshments. Thank you so much 🙌
See you there! 👋

Battle of the personal agents
Join the Columbus AI community for a special event.
**Battle of the Personal Agents** is your chance to see what people are actually building with AI agents and personal automation systems. Whether you’re running OpenClaw, Hermes, or a completely custom solution, bring your agent and show the community how it works.
We’re interested in real-world implementations: the problems your agent solves, how you use it day-to-day, how it’s hosted and managed, how you built it, and why you’ve chosen to keep using it. Live demonstrations are encouraged, so be prepared to show your code, architecture, workflows, and your agent performing real tasks.
This is less about polished presentations and more about sharing practical experience, comparing approaches, and learning from one another. If you’d like to present, please contact Chris Slee (via meetup) before the event so we can allocate enough time for everyone’s demonstrations.
Come ready to show what you’ve built, discover what others are doing, and maybe find a few ideas worth taking home.
Whether you’re deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus.
