HABEX2 - High Altitude Balloon Flight - Design Update - Hybrid
This event is managed by Nature Nerds Austin -- https://www.meetup.com/nature-nerds-of-austin/
This is the monthly design status and update meeting. Participation is both in person and online.
The meeting will be held at a private makerspace, Diogenes. It is located in the same building as the adult club Colette Austin. The door is at the left end of the building, Suite C. Go to the back of the first floor workspace and head upstairs.
If you have questions please feel free to submit them in the comments below or send them to me directly.
Zoom meeting details will be posted about a half hour before the meeting begins.
HABEX - High Altitude Balloon Experiments
The reference to experiments is two-fold. The first is in regard to the actual balloon construction and flight processes. The second is a reference to the payload and what it does during the flight (e.g. images, environmental measurements, etc.). To be clear, there will be two design processes going on in parallel, the balloon proper and the payload. This initial flight is really focusing on the balloon to get that process pinned down and clearly defined. The initial payload should be simple (e.g. digital camera taking pictures).
One of the primary design considerations will be the use of CanSat techniques in the design and construction process. We may need to build a technology demonstrator for this (i.e. dummy payload) before the actual flight process.
CanSat -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CanSat
Design Process:
Design/Buy > Assemble > Test > Loop (Will it fly?) > Flight Plan
Meeting Sequence:
Pilot - Initial meeting (possibly two) to gauge interest and get first round of participants.
Design - Group responsible for the first four stages of the Design Process. - Multiple meetings.
Pre-Flight - Review process to date and verify readiness - Set the date of launch - Possibly two meetings
Launch - Two teams (Launch and Recovery)
Clean up - Launch team cleans up launch site and transitions to tracking and telemetry
Recovery - Recovery team (possibly several groups) chases the balloon and tries to stay ahead of it.
Post-Flight - Review, analysis, and release of flight report (including experimental results if any).
Flight Plan:
* Pre-Flight
* Schedule
* Assembly
* Launch
* Tracking
* Recovery
* Review/Release Results
Constraints:
* COVID 19
* Budget
* Resources/Tools/Facilities
* Legal (e.g. FAA rules about weight and number of modules)
* People
* Transportation
Salesforce Saturday Austin
We ARE mtg In-Person every week!
In person, we are meeting at Capital One Cafe--in the Domain--out in the coffee shop (unless it's crowded, and we'll be back where the tables are). If you get there first grab a couple of tables, we'll be there.
We are a very informal group. There is no set agenda! Just come with your laptop and your questions! If you don't have a laptop, you can still come with your questions! We can help with business processes, configuration, certifications, code, Trailhead, pretty much anything Salesforce Related! There is also no set time, drop in anytime between 9am to Noon!
Thank you,
Stephanie :-)
Easy-Mid problems
Bring a whiteboard or a laptop or a piece of paper. We will be solving 1 easy and 1 medium problem on LeetCode.
We have no rules for being late or leaving early, you can be late and start from the second problem or do the first one and leave.
The main idea is to work together on it, share thoughts and discuss a solution.
For those who don't like the time pressure during the session, I will be posting problems in the comments for the session 1 day in advance.
Lake Creek Trail - Early Migrants
Whether you’re a seasoned "lister" looking for that elusive spring fallout or a curious newcomer eager to see your first Painted Bunting, come join us for a morning of discovery at the [Lake Creek Trail in Northwest Austin](https://maps.app.goo.gl/9Ken3sYdBcGA3tQs5)!
This hidden gem is a premier example of a well-protected urban habitat, acting as a vital green artery for birds navigating the Central Flyway. Because of its unique mix of riparian corridors and dense brush, it serves as a critical "refueling station" for tired migrants.
**What We’ll Be Looking For**
Spring is a magical time at Lake Creek. We will be keeping our eyes (and ears!) peeled for:
* Dazzling Warblers: From the bright yellow of the Wilson’s Warbler to the striking patterns of the Black-and-white, we’ll hunt for these "jewels of the canopy" as they flit through the oak and elms.
* Acrobatic Flycatchers: Watch for Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and Eastern Phoebes performing mid-air stunts to catch their morning meal.
* Surprising Shorebirds: While often overlooked in urban settings, the creek’s edges often host Solitary Sandpipers or Spotted Sandpipers bobbing along the water’s edge.
**A Comfortable Path for All**
One of the best parts of this location is its accessibility. The trails are almost entirely paved sidewalks, making this a low-impact, easy-access hike. You won’t need heavy hiking boots—just comfortable walking shoes and your favorite pair of binoculars. We will move at a "birder’s pace" (slow and observant), ensuring everyone gets a chance to see the birds.
**New to Birding?**
Don't be intimidated! This is a judgment-free zone. We’ll practice "birding by ear" and share tips on how to spot movement in the brush. For the veterans, this is a fantastic opportunity to share your expertise and perhaps help a neighbor find their "spark bird."
**The Details**
Bring water, a hat, and your sense of wonder. Lake Creek Trail never fails to surprise us with its biodiversity, proving that you don’t have to leave the city limits to experience the wild heart of Texas.
Let’s flock together and celebrate the return of our feathered friends!
***
We will meet at the Braes Valley TrailHead Parking Lot at 8am.
(9504 Braes Valley St, Austin, TX 78729)
Plan on birding for a minimum of 2 hours.
