This meetup emerged from Tim, one of the organizers, who had several disappointing experiences at in-person mixer events. Determined to make a difference, he, along with another community builder Adeline, decided to launch "How We Met." After receiving several DMs, we concluded that since this is our inaugural gathering, we should open the event to everyone and foster an inclusive community while sharing our story with you. **What’s different?** There won’t be a prize at the end, and instead of enforcing a strict 1:1 ratio, we’re turning this into a networking/mixer event. ‘Women’s stories’ Our host, Lesley, is looking for stories from a woman’s point of view. Have you had to rebel against cultural expectations? What’s motherhood really like? Body positivity -v- societal expectations. Diets! Bad dates! The mental load The menopause. Peri post. Stories that other women will relate to in celebration of womanhood. Lesley is looking forward to hearing your stories in preparation for our March show. If you've got a story or just an idea, come along and pitch it for the show. If your story is shortlisted for the show, our host will work with you as you polish and rehearse it. Story Requirements: - Your story must be true - It must be told in the first person—you are the main character - It should be between 5-10 minutes You don't need to have a completed or polished story ready - just a beginning idea is okay. This workshop is open to individuals at all levels, first-timers or old hands. The purpose of Hong Kong Stories is to help you become a better storyteller. For our second book of 2026, we have a memoir of life on a remote Arctic island. 'In 1934, the painter Christiane Ritter leaves her comfortable life in Austria and travels to the remote Arctic island of Spitsbergen, to spend a year there with her husband. She thinks it will be a relaxing trip, a chance to 'read thick books in the remote quiet and, not least, sleep to my heart's content', but when Christiane arrives she is shocked to realize that they are to live in a tiny ramshackle hut on the shores of a lonely fjord, hundreds of miles from the nearest settlement, battling the elements every day, just to survive. At first, Christiane is horrified by the freezing cold, the bleak landscape the lack of equipment and supplies... But as time passes, after encounters with bears and seals, long treks over the ice and months on end of perpetual night, she finds herself falling in love with the Arctic's harsh, otherworldly beauty, gaining a great sense of inner peace and a new appreciation for the sanctity of life.'
