And when we talk about Romans in the Netherlands, there is one unavoidable place to go: **Nijmegen**, the oldest city in the country, founded by the Romans as **Noviomagus**. We’ll start from the other side of the river Waal and walk towards the historic city centre, combining **river landscapes, green parks and urban history**. Along the way we’ll explore how the Romans conquered large parts of what is now the Netherlands, built forts and military camps along the Rhine (the *limes*), and established their first real city here. 🏔️ Everest Update for the Veluwe Power Hikers We were preparing for a classic VPH high altitude expedition on top of the world. Unfortunately there is some disappointing news. Starting in 2026, Nepal is introducing strict new regulations for climbing Mount Everest. Climbers will now need to have previously summited a 7,000 meter peak in Nepal and must also submit mandatory health certificates. Because we cannot realistically summit a 7,000 meter peak and then climb Everest on the same day during our hike, I am unfortunately obliged to change the program. There is also another small complication. 1 April falls on a Wednesday, which makes organizing the expedition a bit difficult. After a poll in the WhatsApp group, we decided to move the date to **28 March** and climb the highest point of the Veluwe, **Signaal Imbosch (110 m)**. Even if it’s not Everest, don’t underestimate this hike: we will cover **22 km with about 350 metres of elevation gain** at a brisk pace. At this altitude, however, oxygen bottles are no longer recommended. We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM. It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily. I'll try to have signs outside Marian Hall that Identify our group. We hope to have you join us!
