1# London Software Guild
**About the London Software Guild**
The London Software Guild gathers developers, architects, and teams across London who care deeply about the craft of building great software. No fluff, no vendor pitches — just people who take the work seriously, sharing what they've learned the hard way.

## **Tonight's Speakers**
## **🎤 Kieran — Founding Engineer, Demand-Genius**
Kieran is a founding engineer at Demand-Genius, working to close the gap between how humans and machines perceive your brand versus reality. Background in electrical & electronic engineering, previously working on real-time payments systems, high-scale distributed dynamic rules engines, and reverse proxies. Third Start-Up/Scale-Up (because I'm dumb and have never learnt my lesson).
**Talk: The Statistical (Un)Certainty That Our AI Co-Founder Ruins Everything**
We have handed the most powerful text prediction machines ever built the keys to our codebases. They write code that is statistically likely to be correct. But "statistically likely" and "correct" are not the same thing. As we move toward autonomous multi-agent systems writing production code at machine speed, that gap becomes the central engineering problem of our time.
Code is not text. It is a formal, deterministic, mathematical structure that happens to be serialised as text. Every tool in the agentic coding stack — retrieval, editing, version control, coordination — treats it as text.
This talk argues that the answer isn't better frontier models. It's better systems around models. Specifically, the engineering disciplines we've used for a century to control uncertain systems — feedback loops, formal verification, dependency analysis, and control theory — are the missing layer between "AI can write code" and "AI can write code you can trust."
***
## **🎤 Andy Roberts — Senior Engineering Leader**
Andy Roberts is a senior engineering leader with 25+ years of experience — the kind where you've actually written the code, run the teams, and been in the room when things went wrong at scale. Previously Head of EMEA Enterprise Solutions at Apollo GraphQL, where he helped companies like [Booking.com](https://booking.com/), PayPal, and The New York Times stop arguing about their APIs. Before that, Head of API Engineering at RS Components, wrangling 11 teams. Has strong opinions about federated architecture and isn't afraid to use them.
**Talk: Built for Browsers, Billed by Tokens**
*Your microservices solved for latency. AI agents are solving for context. Nobody told your APIs.*
Every era of software development has been defined by a constraint that reshaped architecture. In the database era we optimised for round trips. In the web era we obsessed over latency. Mobile forced us to think about bandwidth and battery. Each shift required new instincts, new patterns, new defaults. We're in the middle of another one.
The AI era introduces a new constraint: context. Language models have finite working memory, and every API response your services return goes into it. The kitchen-sink response payloads that work fine for browsers are quietly making your AI agents more expensive and less capable — and the cost is almost entirely invisible in your existing dashboards.
This talk maps the constraint transition from latency to context, shows what it means for the microservice APIs you have today, and offers five concrete things you can do about it without touching a line of existing backend code.
Online gentle Yoga, Qi gong and meditation for inner peace
Come and join me for some **energising Yoga, healing Qi gong and relaxing meditation** and connect with some lovely people. This is your “me” time to nourish your mind, body and spirit, release energy blockages holding you back, heal your body and lift your spirits ☺️
“I've been going to Sarah's Qi Gong class for nearly 3 years, and it is amazing. Many a time I start off the class feeling out of sorts and low and I come away feeling so peaceful and trusting that everything will be OK. Sarah is an amazing teacher and so welcoming and has a very strong healing energy about her, and the small group of women has formed a really nice bond. There is a varied mix of things we do in the class including energy medicine, yoga stretches, sometimes dance, meditation, chakras- the list goes on! I have health issues and it is a really good healing rest for my body. So glad I found it and Sarah- wouldn't miss it for the world.” Grace, Sheffield
I have been running this special class since lockdown and have a group of regular people who attend (which doesn’t show on RSVP). We have created a **beautiful high vibrational energy** in this class that is healing, nurturing and uplifting.
🌺 Yoga is known to help **release tension from the muscles** where we hold stress, this in turn releases tension from the mind. We will do spiritual yoga which is the traditional form of yoga. It’s gentle, slow, meditation in movement.
🌺 Qi gong is an ancient Chinese healing practice which is gentle yet powerful at calming the mind, **clearing energy blockages** and healing the body. We will do various movements each week such as techniques that help with digestion & adrenal glands to restore your energy that I will share intuitively where I feel guided.
🌺 Donna Eden energy exercises are a form of gentle movements that help boost the immune system and clear stuck energy which causes low mood and lack of motivation. We also do **chakra clearing** to help you to feel more emotionally balanced.
🌺 Meditation to help calm mind chatter and breathing exercises to calm the nervous system and lift the mood. I also guide you through a gratitude practice at the end that **helps you to manifest what you desire!**
**ENERGY EXCHANGE**\~ £6 only. Although this is a very uplifting healing class that is of high value, I keep the price low so that it’s accessible to everyone.
Book your space here: https://buytickets.at/sarahmonreal/676431 & you will receive the zoom link via email. Check your junk box just in case.
If you wish to do the class in your own time. Here’s the link to get your recording. It’s £5 and is 50 minutes long. https://www.tickettailor.com/events/sarahalvarez/496209
**What you need to bring**
If you have a yoga Matt that’s great, if not you can do the exercises on the floor. I recommend investing in a yoga Matt so you can do the floor movements comfortably. Amazon and EBay sell reasonably priced yoga matts from £10. Please also have a cushion nearby as you may need it for some movements.
\*\*By participating in this class you agree to take full responsibility for your health and even though this class is gentle, contacting your doctor if you have a medical condition which you are concerned about may affect your ability to participate. You are advised to listen to your body during the class & do what feels comfortable. You are welcome to sit during many of the qi gong moves, it will be just as powerful.
I look forward to seeing you there!
Testimonials from regular attendees
Sarah is always so welcoming, friendly and relaxed, creating a wonderful space for us to focus on ourselves. I love the blend of different practices where my body is gently stretched, my mind calmed and my spirit nourished. No matter how I feel beforehand I always feel relaxed and uplifted afterwards. I would highly recommend this to everyone! Susie, Kent
I’ve been doing Sarah’s class for a few years and find it very helpful. The moves are easy to do yet have a big impact. I always feel better afterwards. Jacquie, London

**Raff Di Meo**
Senior Product Design Manager at Optimizely.
Raff has spent over 10 years designing products across startups, agencies, and enterprise SaaS, including a startup acquisition. Today, he's a Senior Product Design Manager at Optimizely, where he leads a team of designers reshaping how marketing teams create content across the web.
He's an active speaker in the UX community and writes Some Designers on Substack, championing inclusivity and supporting designers through a profession that won't sit still.
**————————**
**About the Talk:**
**————————**
**When too easy to use becomes a problem: from e-commerce returns to AI in design**
A few years ago, Raff designed a returns flow for an e-commerce product. It was fast, frictionless, and users loved it. It also helped normalise a behaviour that cost businesses millions and generated thousands of tonnes of waste. By every metric tracked, it was a success. By every metric not tracked, it was a disaster.
Today, the same pattern is playing out. Not just in the products we design, but in how we design them. Teams are reshaping their entire process around AI tools that can't even retain their own users. We're told the old ways are dead. Move faster. Ship more. Trust the tools.
In this talk, Raff will share what the returns project taught him about the gap between a successful design and a responsible one, and how those lessons are shaping how his team is navigating AI right now: what they're using, what's genuinely working, and what they're deliberately protecting.
You'll leave with three things you can take back to your team: why understanding the problem still comes first, how to explore with AI without losing your craft, and a dead-simple habit for catching unintended consequences before they ship.

Saturday Acting Workshop - CORIOLANUS
Following our critically acclaimed productions of OTHELLO, MACBETH and TWELFTH NIGHT the Acting gymnasium's Saturday workshop returns to Theatre Deli on Saturday 28th March with a new imagining of Shakepeare's CORIOLANUS. Plenty of superb roles available!!
Set in a post-apocalyptic landscape, Coriolanus, a fierce and proud Roman general, earns fame after defeating Rome’s enemies, especially at Corioli. Despite his military success, he despises the common people and refuses to flatter them for political gain. Urged to seek public office, his arrogance alienates citizens, leading to his banishment. In anger, he allies with his former enemy Aufidius and marches against Rome. As destruction looms, his mother, Volumnia, pleads with him to spare the city. Moved by her words, he relents, choosing honor over revenge. His decision saves Rome but seals his fate, as he is killed for betraying his allies in return.

From Web Forms to Web Components - Burton Smith
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you.
The building address is 4450 Bridge Park
The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400
**Abstract**
Web Forms gave .NET developers a powerful abstraction for building reusable UI controls long before design systems were a thing. Web Components finally bring that same idea to the browser natively.
This session explores how the Web Forms mindset translates into Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, and HTML templates. We’ll examine how Web Components enable design systems that work across frameworks, how they differ from server‑driven controls, and why they’re becoming a foundational layer for modern UI. Whether you’re maintaining legacy apps or building greenfield projects, you’ll leave with a practical understanding of how to apply familiar patterns in a modern, standards‑based way.

Not all ideas will move forward after initial pitches on Saturday. Once pitches are complete, we’ll vote for top ideas and form teams around the 4 – 7 ideas with the most votes. You must recruit **at least four total team members** (including the founder) to move forward and have a chance at getting funded on Sunday. If your idea doesn’t move forward, you can join another team!
**Do I have to submit my idea online prior to the event?**
Unlike previous years, we don’t have the option to submit your idea online prior to the event. Instead, everyone will be going through a brainstorming exercise on Saturday that’ll help you prepare for your initial pitch.
**Will we be working for 24 hours straight?**
Nope. The event is split over two days. You’ll be building on Saturday and pitching on Sunday.
**Do I have to pitch an idea?**
Nope. You can also simply join a team.
**What types of entrepreneurs does GBH support?**
While GBH most often works with technology startups, we support *any* organization (for- or non-profit) that makes an impact on health in the US or across the world.

Fun & easy way to play more tennis (read event description)
We’re still working to get more people into these Meetups, but our goal is to give PlayYourCourt members a few social tennis outings each week in addition to your practice sessions and Challenge League matches.
These Meetups are co-ed, super laid back, and all skill levels are welcome. Post your skill level and a suggested court in the comments section so we can round up as many players as we can for some tennis fun!
Also, if you’re looking to meet new practice partners or play some matches and you aren’t already in the PlayYourCourt Community, you can go here to see what we’re all about and sign up:
https://www.playyourcourt.com/tennis-community/columbus-oh/meetup/
If you love tennis, we’d love to have you! Be sure and watch the quick video that explains how everything works.
Happy hitting!

DoJo (Informal Python Meeting)
**New Dojo Location!**
**Knotty Pine Brewing**
1765 W 3rd Ave,
Columbus, OH 43212
We're going to try a new dojo location for a few weeks and see how it works
Dojos are informal Python group study sessions where everyone interested in Python gathers to learn about Python, help others with Python, or just hang out. Everyone is welcome from Python beginners to experts. Bringing a laptop is encouraged (we'll have extension cords and power strips). If there's something you want to learn leave a comment on this invite so we can plan ahead.
We're looking for topic suggestions and people interested in presenting at our monthly meetings. To this end we've set up a survey form at [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/15eBKF1nQQ2XS5gzD4rvhVRHMBEj7lJtHuA9wXupS3Uc](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/15eBKF1nQQ2XS5gzD4rvhVRHMBEj7lJtHuA9wXupS3Uc)
