Fun JVM: Safe Scala practically in the cloud + lighning talks
We'll have another session with talks.
The main topic will be about Safe Scala and DAPR.
Safe Scala is a subset of the Scala language which strictly enforces the discipline of tracking all effects via Capabilities. It was originally pitched by Odersky as safe way to let AI agents write code, since they can't just run arbitrary code from JDK nor do side effects in general. But it may have seemed thus as a purely academic exercise.
This is where DAPR comes in. It's an innovative cloud runtime from Microsoft, which lets programmers focus on writing business logic. The rest, like wiring up service calls, queues, handling retries or managing state is delegated to a language agnostic sidecar container.
The point of the presentation will be to prove that if we represent individual aspects of DAPR as Capabilities, we can write apps in Safe Scala. We will prove that Safe Scala can actually be practical choice for writing typical cloud (micro-)services.
We'll also have a round of lightning talks.

Thriving in the Age of Collapse
Something is shifting in the world, and most of us can feel it even when we can’t quite name it.
This evening is an invitation to slow down together and look more carefully at what’s happening — the forces pulling us upward into endless striving and downward into exhaustion, and the possibility that these are not separate crises but expressions of the same underlying dynamic. The cracks appearing around us may be less a sign of collapse than an opening.
Not an evening about fixing everything. More an exploration of what it might mean to find footing — and even moments of joy — in disorienting times.
### How the evening will unfold
The first part of the evening will be a reflection and conversation led by František, with space for questions and dialogue. After that, the evening opens up: tea, food, smaller conversations, and time for half-formed intuitions to meet others thinking along similar lines.
Školská 28 has hosted this kind of slow, attentive exchange for decades, and the space itself shapes the atmosphere of the evening.
Stay as long as feels right.
### About František
Over the past decade, František has moved between very different worlds — from research in Xinjiang to theology classrooms, from long-distance cycling journeys to communities working on systemic change. Along the way, he became increasingly interested in the deeper questions underneath modern life: how to live meaningfully in a time when many inherited structures no longer feel stable.
Today he stewards Hostačov, a 16th-century château in the Czech Highlands, where he is building a home for the kind of unhurried inquiry modern life rarely leaves room for.
### The container
The evening is hosted under the umbrella of IDG Czechia (Inner Development Goals), a community focused on cultivating the inner capacities needed to navigate complex challenges. František is one of the core contributors to the IDG Czechia Centre.
Contribution for the space: 0–200 CZK, paid at the venue.

Czech Co-Learning Session 🇨🇿
Learning Czech can be hard and demotivating, especially when studying alone.
**This meetup is a shared study session where we come together to stay focused, motivated, and make progress — each in our own way.**
This is a co-learning / co-studying session, not a class. There is no teacher, no lesson, and no study material provided.
Everyone comes with their own resources and studies independently, in a shared environment.
🧠 **How it works**
• We all bring our own material:
• textbooks
• homework from a Czech course
• Duolingo or other apps
• reading practice
• vocabulary review, etc.
• We mainly work individually
• We are free to:
• ask questions
• help each other
• share tips and resources
• No teacher, no formal structure, no pressure
👥 **Who is it for?**
• Czech learners of all levels
• Non-Czech speakers (expats, internationals)
• Czech native speakers are welcome if they want to help, but this is not a language exchange
⏱ **Practical info**
• Location: Cafedu
12, Škrétova 490, 120 00 Praha 2
(Metro A and C, Muzeum station)
• Duration: 2 hours, or less or more, as you want
• Day & time: Monday, 18:00
• Group size: small group for now
• Free event — please support the café by ordering a drink ☕
If you’re learning Czech and lack motivation when studying alone, come join us — let’s find it together 🙂

AI Reading Club: Letter from Utopia
At our second meeting, we discussed Eliezer Yudkowsky's book, "[If anyone builds it, everyone dies](https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/474267/if-anyone-builds-it-everyone-dies-by-soares-eliezer-yudkowsky-and-nate/9781847928924)". So this time, something optimistic is needed :)
**Let's dive into different utopian versions of our world with AGI.** The texts below are just suggestions; pick one or read something different. The more colorful utopias, the better the discussion.
* [Nick Bostrom: Letter from Utopia](https://nickbostrom.com/utopia) (or read the whole "Deep Utopia" book, if you feel like it).
* [Dario Amodei: Machines of Loving Grace](https://darioamodei.com/essay/machines-of-loving-grace)
* [Isaac Asimov: The Last Question](https://users.ece.cmu.edu/~gamvrosi/thelastq.html)
* [Iain Banks: Culture series](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_series)
* TBD (suggestions welcome!)
No academic background is required, just a willingness to read, think, and share your thoughts. But please, read the text in advance and be ready to share its main ideas :)
The session will be discussion-based, lightly moderated, and limited to a small group to allow for real conversation.
I look forward to what the third AI reading club session brings!
Open philosophical discussion in the heart of Prague
Welcome to the international Café Philo in Prague. We meet every first Saturday of the month in the cosy [Café Millème](https://store11473398.ecwid.com) in the center of Prague. We choose a participant randomly, by lottery, who then has the privilege to determine the topic of our discussion. We will reflect, ponder and exchange arguments until our brains are on fire. Philosophy isn't just something for universities, it is a way to open your mind to new thoughts and questions. No application is necessary, there is no entrance fee and there are no prerequisites for participating, except curiosity and respect for other people. We meet from 17:15 until 18:45 to follow together the white rabbit into the wonderland of philosophy...

The afternoon session starts at 2:00 pm. You're welcome to join both sessions or just one. Please come as close to 9:00 as you can if you come for the morning session. If you come to the afternoon session, we are usually back by about a quarter to 2:00.
Let’s Discuss! Bertrand Russell, A Free Man’s Worship
On Saturday, 13th of June, we’re going to meet and discuss the essay by Bertrand Russel, *A Free Man’s Worship*. First published in 1903, it remains one of Russell’s best-known and most reprinted essay.
In the essay, Russell reflects on the human condition, with its beauty and sorrow. As an atheist, he asks whether a meaningful life is possible without religion and whether we can find purpose in a universe that seems indifferent to us. If life is brief and suffering unavoidable, what should we live for? What ideals should guide us? Let’s discuss!
Bertrand Russell (1872–1970) was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, and public intellectual, widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950 for his writings in defence of humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought.
***
Anyone is welcome to join! No background in philosophy is needed. Before the meeting, please read the essay (it’s only 6 pages long), think about it, and note any passages you find especially interesting, challenging, or worth discussing. We’ll share our thoughts and interpretations during the meeting.
Organizational notes:
📍 Attendance is free
⏳ Spots are limited
🔗 Please register via the app so we know how many people to expect and can reserve a table accordingly
***
Some questions to contemplate:
* Can people accept that the universe may have no inherent meaning without falling into nihilism?
* Is everyone capable of this? What qualities might it require? How should we think about those who are not?
* Do people need religion to live meaningful lives, or can meaning be found elsewhere? Dostoevsky, for example in *Demons*, doubted that anything good could come from atheism – was he right?
* Which values does Russell consider worth admiring? What values do you personally see as ultimate or worth ‘worshipping’?
* What roles do Nature, Fate, and Time play in Russell’s worldview?
* What does modern society present as ultimate values – beauty, success, power, status, comfort? Do these provide meaning?
* What role should the state play in shaping values? When can it do too much – and when too little?
* How do you personally deal with nihilism or existential dread? Do you experience it at all?

Frontier AI models are evolving quickly, but the real challenge is no longer just building larger systems, it is turning advances in LLM research into reliable, efficient, and valuable products in the real world.
We invite you to join a panel discussion featuring experts working across AI research and engineering, who will share their perspectives on what actually matters in the next wave of LLM development. The conversation will explore the trade-offs between scale, efficiency, reasoning, and product impact, as well as what it takes to move from experimental models to systems that can be deployed at scale. The discussion will be moderated by **[Rogers Leo](https://www.linkedin.com/in/rogersjeffreyl/?utm_source=luma), Director of Engineering and Product (Agentic AI) at [Mews](https://www.mews.com/en?utm_source=luma).**
This panel will go beyond the hype and focus on practical lessons from building with LLMs today. We will look at where current approaches break down, what “good enough” really means in production, and why efficiency and system design may matter as much as model capability.

Free In-Person Meeting: Get Over Losses & Betrayals, Build Lasting Relationships
This is a free, in-person meeting on the subject of betrayals, losses and how to get over them so you can build lasting relationships.
Burdened by a stressful relationship? Unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of anger, despair or self-doubt. They can create dwindling spirals of fights and seeking to make-up, or trying to “pin the blame” on someone or something. If you don’t find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse.
Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well.
Whether you are suffering from a divorce, or a painful break-up, don’t know who to trust (or who to CHOOSE) as a partner, friend, boss or employee - the anxiety of relationship troubles can really make a mess of things. Maybe you’ve suffered a betrayal, or are dealing with hostility or criticalness or invalidation. Dwindling relationships can involve destructive behavior, where we hurt those we love, or start succumbing to self-destructive thoughts, attitudes or behaviors that spiral out of control and affect much more than our immediate relationship.
Past losses in love or life can affect how we act or react to new people and situations and hold us back from even starting to create new, possibly great relationships! How can one get back onto a saner course of action?
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life: human relationships!
Break free from self imposed limitations
Here we will discuss:
• How to “erase” the trauma of past hurts and betrayals so that one isn’t always repeating past mistakes.
• Why and how do the negative emotions of others affect you?
• Why is my partner withdrawing and what can I do about it?
• Why do we sometimes feel compelled to hurt the ones we love?
• Fights & arguments - what's really behind them?
• What underlies “corrosive criticism” or the need to invalidate self or others?
• How one can stably change one’s outlook on life so they can affect positive change?
• Where do compulsive destructive behaviors come from and what can be done about them?
• How to form closer bonds & keep growing the relationships with the people you care about?
• How to enhance one’s own ability to survive and create positive healthy relationships whether in love, family & friendships or in work, business or one’s career?
Relationships can be hard and life itself IS challenging. Why not arm yourself with the knowledge and breakthroughs that have been made about the mind, mental reactions & interpersonal relationships, so that one has better awareness and control over themselves and life in general.
Learn where painful experiences are “stored” and how they can unknowingly affect us. You will also find out how one can “erase” those past painful experiences so that one is free to move forward without being tripped up by the past. Learn too, about what can lead some people to become “toxic” personalities and how to identify those traits in others so you won’t be tripped up trusting the wrong person.
Our free Meet-ups occur in a safe environment where one can learn, without fear of judgment or criticism, and without the recommendation of harmful mental techniques or therapies, just how YOU can get yourself onto a happier & more successful path: in love & in life.
We look forward to having you join us!
