Who's Afraid of Determinism?
Who's Afraid of Determinism?
A philosophy meetup on freedom, necessity, and responsibility Is everything that happens inevitable? If our actions are determined by prior causesโ€”biology, upbringing, laws of natureโ€”what becomes of free will, moral responsibility, praise and blame? And if determinism is true, should we be afraid of it at all? In this meetup weโ€™ll tackle determinism from multiple angles: Hard determinism: if determinism is true, free will is an illusion. Libertarianism: genuine freedom requires indeterminism. Compatibilism: freedom and determinism can coexist. Weโ€™ll discuss classic thought experiments (Frankfurt cases, Laplaceโ€™s demon), contemporary worries about agency and accountability, and the existential stakes: guilt, meaning, and self-understanding in a determined world. Format: A short introduction to frame the problem, followed by guided small-group discussion and a plenary debate. No prior expertise requiredโ€”come curious, skeptical, or ready to defend a position (even one you donโ€™t fully believe). Guiding questions: If determinism is true, could you have done otherwise? Do responsibility and punishment still make sense? Is fear of determinism philosophicalโ€”or psychological? Which view actually fits our lived experience? All are welcome. Bring your argumentsโ€”and your anxieties. **Description by ChatGPT**

Board Games at Arkade (Thursday)
Board Games at Arkade (Thursday)
Pay the **5 โ‚ฌ board gaming fee** to the bar at the counter when you arrive. You must be at least 18 years old to enter [Arkade](https://www.arkade.fi/). We play in English and the game rules are taught before starting play, unless everyone is already familiar with the game. No previous experience with board gaming required. The venue has a great board game library, the host and other players usually bring their own games too: our selection varies weekly. We're a very casual group so you're welcome to arrive early or late and join whatever game is starting up, there is no attendance tracking, or welcoming process. The bar has alcoholic drinks, mocktails, and soft drinks available as well as some snack foods. They've been okay with people ordering food to the bar with meal delivery services. If you are feeling sick, please stay home.

TOIVO groups** * Groups meet between 8-10 times * Every meeting will cover a different well-being theme (i.e. healthy food, physical exercise, sleep, relationships, stress, emotions, etc.) * TOIVO groups are closed groups which means once the group is formed, no new members are added to the group. **3\.
