Django London Meetup June
Django London Meetup June
June Edition ✨✨! We will be at the MongoDB London office! Django London Meetup is a monthly meeting to discuss Django, Python, the web, and related topics. The meetups are open to all with an interest in building websites with Django. (in-person only event, no streaming) **Talks:** **AI Agents Need Memory Too: Building Systems That Remember What Matters — Abigail Afi Gbadago** AI agents are only as good as what they can remember, but deciding what to store, where to persist it, and how to retrieve it at the right moment is harder than it sounds. This talk walks through a practical framework for architecting memory systems for agentic applications, covering memory types, storage patterns, retrieval strategies using vector search, and managing the full memory lifecycle in production. Afi is a Senior Software Engineer and Developer Advocate (MongoDB). She serves as Vice President of the Django Software Foundation, a Fellow of the Python Software Foundation, and is a Microsoft MVP for Python and Web. Afi is passionate about building great software and stronger tech communities. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **Replay Failed Python Runs: Reverse Debugging When Logs Aren’t Enough** **\- Nathan Matthews** Reproducing Python failures from a traceback alone is often impossible once the request is gone or the environment has changed. This talk introduces Retrace, an open-source reverse debugger that lets you record, replay, and step backwards through a failing run, giving both developers and AI agents concrete evidence for debugging. Nathan Matthews is Co-founder and CTO of Retrace Software. He has spent his career building complex Python and distributed systems across fintech, developer tools, and data platforms, including roles at 10x Future Technologies, Digital Asset, Elsevier, and Droit. At Retrace, Nathan leads the technical work behind deterministic replay and reverse debugging for CPython. **Want to share your Django or Python knowledge?** We’d love to feature your talk! Just fill out our [Speaker form](https://tinyurl.com/django-london-speaker-form) to propose a talk! **Agenda:** • 6:15pm Doors open, socialising • 6:30pm Food and drinks offered by our sponsor • 7:00pm Doors close • 7:15pm Introduction, Talks • 8:30pm Socialising • 9:30pm Fin **Please make sure to arrive between 6:15 PM and 6:55 PM**. All Out of Bubblegum Film Club 141 / Nightcrawler
Nightcrawler is a 2014 American neo-noir satirical thriller film written and directed by Dan Gilroy in his directorial debut. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as an unhinged stringer who seeks out violent and morbid events late at night in Los Angeles so he can film them and sell the exclusive footage to a local television news station. The supporting cast includes Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed, and Bill Paxton. It was met with widespread praise, especially Gilroy's screenplay and the performances of Gyllenhaal and Russo. Several critics listed Nightcrawler as one of the best films of 2014 and it received various accolades, including a Best Original Screenplay nomination at the 87th Academy Awards. Please note we will not be showing the film at the meeting. Make sure you watch the film before you attend and then come and join in with the conversation. It’s just a discussion. It’s not a screening. We will be meeting in The Ludski Bar in the Rio Cinema. Flash Fiction - Once Upon a Pub...
Flash Fiction - Once Upon a Pub...
YOU CAN ALSO BOOK DIRECTLY VIA OUR WEBSITE HERE: https://www.writeandpint.com/events/flash-fiction-once-upon-a-pub-a-free-book . Hi there! For this session, we'll be using a single tarot card draw to spark fast, instinctive fiction — no deliberating, no second-guessing, just you and the story that lands. The session will be hosted by published fiction writer, editor, and general story lover, Annie Percik. If you're already writing something, great! And if you're approaching the page for the very first time — that's great, too! **Whoever you are, we'd love you to come and join us.** When you arrive, please feel free to buy yourself a drink at the bar, then come and join us in the upstairs function room and say hello to some new, friendly faces before we begin. \*\*\*No experience of creative writing is necessary. \*\*\*No pressure to read your work in front of the group. **For this session, we'll be working in the spirit of flash fiction** — tight time limits, very short pieces, and a single card draw to get you going. You'll write to a prompt, trust your first instinct, and see what emerges when you don't give yourself time to overthink it. Fast, focused, and surprisingly revealing. You're welcome to use the session to develop something you're already working on, but if you're just starting out, the constraints of flash are actually a brilliant place to begin. We've been hosting writing workshops, social events, retreats, and courses for 10+ years now and we strive to make our events inclusive, friendly, informative, and highly creative. If you have **any questions whatsoever, you're very welcome to text 07891948039** and we'll answer as soon as possible! Otherwise, please RSVP, book the date in your diary, and join us for this exciting event. Cheers! Write & a Pint

Terms such as architecture astronautics and the ivory tower stereotype highlight the perceived disconnect between many architects and the realities of day-to-day code maintenance. Too often, architectural patterns are applied with insufficient understanding, leading to cargo-cult adoption and increased waste in the software development process. When applied in the right context, however, certain architectural approaches can be powerful enablers. In this talk, I would like to share the story of a serverless application in which elements of the Ports and Adapters architecture made a tangible, positive difference. ⭐ Przemysław Pokrywka ⭐ Husband, dad, grandad, software engineer. Functional Scala enthusiast with imperative OOP Java background. Fan of the command line. **🗣️ David Lebl: Complexity is a Sin, But Hexagons Forgive** A visual journey from spaghetti to sanity. This talk traces how cognitive load accumulates in unconstrained codebases, how domain-driven design and bounded contexts restore order, and how hexagonal architecture provides a practical, forgiving structure for real-world systems — all laid out on a single zoomable canvas where every example links back to the bigger picture. ⭐ David Lebl ⭐ David is a software developer with a CS background and 5 years of Scala and FP experience. He leads a small team, occasionally survives his own accidental complexity, and is here to share what he learned the hard way. ———————————————————— 🗣️ Would you like to present, but are not sure how to start? The Spawn London (Beginner Friendly Game) - Social Deduction on a Cosmic Scale
The Spawn London (Beginner Friendly Game) - Social Deduction on a Cosmic Scale
"Humanity's insatiable appetite to colonise reached far into the stars, but they learned the hard way that some stones should remain unturned. Whilst aggressively terraforming Spawn home worlds, humanity stirred the ancient species out of their slumber and incurred their rage in a cataclysmic event. Now conflict dances across the cosmos as the Spawn seek violent retribution by assimilating themselves among humanity and destroying them from within. Humanity’s only hope of survival is to detect the Spawn among them and destroy the threat." The Spawn is a large-scale elimination-based social deduction game where humanity must root out the Spawn which have infiltrated their ranks or be overpowered by them. The Odyssey - Homer [In-person meeting]
The Odyssey - Homer [In-person meeting]
**This event is supported by The Royal Institute of Philosophy’s [Local Partners Programme](https://royalinstitutephilosophy.org/news/fund-your-event/).** **N.B. this meeting will be held in person in the Prince of Wales pub near Covent Garden. There is also an online session held on Thursday if you are not in London or are not able to attend in-person.** Halfway through our thematic 'Quest' year, we are going back farther than we've ever been to one of the oldest surviving stories, one of the foundations of Western, and now global literature. Homer's Odyssey is the tale of Odysseus' homecoming to Ithaca after defeating the Trojans - his temptations, battles, failures and victories, all interwoven with his wife Penelope's resolve to fend off suitors, and his son Telemachus' search for news of his father. Expect discussions of duty, justice, temptation and different forms of power and leadership. The meeting starts at 7pm with drink breaks at 8 and 9. The discussion will end around 10pm, but leave whenever you need to. Here's the blurb from goodreads.com: If the *Iliad* is the world's greatest war epic, then the *Odyssey* is literature's grandest evocation of everyman's journey though life. Odysseus' reliance on his wit and wiliness for survival in his encounters with divine and natural forces, during his ten-year voyage home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, is at once a timeless human story and an individual test of moral endurance.

Coding Dojo at Spektrix
Coding Dojo at Spektrix
We are excited to host our coding dojo with Spektrix! We'll kick off with an introduction to TDD, its core principles, and following disciplined emergent design. Through hands-on pairing and mob programming, you'll experience how writing tests first doesn't just catch bugs, it shapes cleaner, more intentional code from the ground up. **What about AI tooling?** We encourage the use of AI tooling! We will briefly walk through how such tooling can act as multiplier, not to shortcut the discipline of TDD. **Don't have AI tooling?** No problem. TDD is a discipline that stands on its own, with or without AI. But if it's something you'd like to try, we can pair you with somebody who has the tools set up. Join us for an evening of coding, food and drinks. Come and code along, share ideas, discuss best practices with Test Driven Development and learn from our expert Crafters and your peers in the London Software Craftsmanship community. **What’s the format?** After a short intro, we’ll get into groups/pairs or work solo, whatever people feel most comfortable with, and start building. You choose how you want to work and what language you want to code in. This session is about collaborating with others, becoming a better developer and building your network, in a fun, relaxed environment. We'll be sharing ideas, discussing best practices and using this as an opportunity to learn from our fellow coders. All levels of experience very welcome, if you want to brush up on your Test Driven Development skills or are a complete novice, do come along. All welcome! All you need to do is bring a laptop if you’d like to code along - please have your preferred language and editor setup. **Food and Drinks** Pizza and drinks will be provided upon arrival
In person meetup to critique work submitted by members.
In person meetup to critique work submitted by members.
This is a live session at The Mitre in Greenwich. The purpose of this meeting is to provide and receive critique on submitted extracts of members' creative writing, whether they're working on a novel, screenplay, poetry, a memoir or short story, etc. We share our extracts via email ahead of the meeting to give us all a chance to read the work in our own time and reflect upon it so as to be able to provide useful critique. If you want to submit an extract mail me at gpatrick66@hotmail.com to book a slot. If you are new to the group we ask that you participate in at least two of the Wednesday critiquing sessions before you submit work for review so that you get to know us and have a good understanding of how we operate. This will help you to get the most from a critique of your own work. Extracts should be approx 3,000 words and the full document (extract plus blurbs, questions etc) should not exceed 3,500 words in total. Extracts must be mailed to me (gpatrick66@hotmail.com) at the latest by 9pm on the Saturday before the session so that I can share your work with the rest of the group. We have a limit of 4 extracts per session to give adequate time to review work properly. Feel free to give guidance on any specific areas on which you would like feedback. E.g. Plot, pacing, structure or character development etc. (If you have not received the extracts by the Sunday before the session, mail me.) The group is friendly and relaxed, so please don't feel nervous about sharing your work! We will normally review extracts according to the order in which they are sent to me but if you need a particular slot let me know when you submit your extract and we will try to accommodate that. Please note that all phones MUST be switched to silent mode for the duration of the meeting.

THE BEAST/ La Bête (2023)
THE BEAST/ La Bête (2023)
In the year 2044, in the age of AI, a woman named Gabrielle (Seydoux) tries to purify her DNA by purging the inherited memories of her past lives. She (re)lives her life in 1910 Paris and 2014 Los Angeles, and as the procedure goes on, the lines between her worlds become blurred. These three timelines have a lot of connective tissue holding them together; certain symbols and motifs appear repeatedly, not to mention Mackay’s Louis, a figure whom Gabrielle seems drawn to in each lifetime. *The Beast / La Bête* can be streamed for free on Kanopy or the Criterion Channel. It's also available for rent on Amazon Prime, AppleTV and YouTube.
Claude Code with Unity
Claude Code with Unity
A session on using Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding agent, in real Unity development. We'll cover what coding agents are, where Claude Code fits, and how to apply it to an actual game project. The format is presentation-style, with live demos and time for questions throughout. After brief scene-setting on coding agents and what makes Claude Code distinct, we'll go problem-driven: demoing it live on a released Unity game and introducing each feature as a solution to a problem we hit. What to Expect: * An intro to coding agents and where Claude Code fits * A live demo on a real Unity project * Key features as solutions to real problems: 𝖢𝖫𝖠𝖴𝖣𝖤.𝗆𝖽, context management, hooks, skills, subagents, and MCP * Unity-specific pain points, including Domain Reload and MCP caveats * Putting it together All experience levels welcome. Food and drinks provided. *Note: meetup topics may change — check back for the latest details.*

Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code - Alan Barber
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you. The building address is 4450 Bridge Park The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400 You will need to scan your ID at the door to get a visitor badge. **Abstract** *Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code* Visual Studio Code is one of the most widely used development environments today, and much of its flexibility comes from its extension ecosystem. Extensions allow developers to customize the editor with new features, integrations, and workflow improvements tailored to their needs. In this session, we’ll cover what extensions are and the different types available, including full extensions written in TypeScript or JavaScript, along with lighter-weight extensions such as color themes, language packs, language support, code snippets, and keymaps. We’ll also look at practical reasons a developer might create an extension, from automating repetitive tasks to adding custom tooling. The session includes a hands-on walkthrough of creating a new extension, testing it locally, and understanding the basic project structure. We’ll close with a brief overview of how extensions are packaged and published to the Visual Studio Marketplace and other distribution options. **YouTube Link** TBD
