Together for the first time in one Mega-tour, the history of the Village of Yorkville and Rosedale. Even though each village had its own distinct history and characteristics, the two were miles apart in their development. One was industrial, and the other residential, all under the watchful gaze of Mr. Jarvis. Oh and let's not forget the brewer Mr. Bloore, notice the spelling?
Named for the wild roses that littered the hills above the homestead of William Jarvis and his wife Mary, Rosedale is an iconic Toronto district with elegant houses, manicured lawns, and a fascinating history!
Yorkville to the southwest is tied in with the history of Rosedale, but barely, and runs parallel to the development of both the neighbourhood and the surrounding area. With the Yorkville Brick Works, and the tidy ravine to the east it was a picturesque part of Toronto that remained pretty much rural into the late 19th century.
On this walking tour we explore both districts, and how Rosedale emerged as an affluent Toronto suburb, but all was not good, as the district approached the 1930s depression. With a large proportion of rooming houses, Rosedale slipped in influence and affluence.
This walking tour is for all walking levels and fitness skills. Please dress for the season and bring water. And remember to bring your love of history.
This tour begins across the street from the Rosedale Subway Station in Ramsden Park. The tour returns to the start location after the walk!

Paul and Chloe think Jennifer's project is fascinating, and they join the group. They gather around Jenniferās laptop and work on the nav bar for 2 hours. Jennifer is the one typing out the code while Paul and Chloe research, brainstorm, and offer suggestions.

Dropping Datadog Without Losing Your Bark: Open-Source Observability
Observability is supposed to help us understand our systems but for many teams it has quietly become one of the most expensive and least flexible parts of the stack. Plenty of organizations take polished SaaS platforms like Datadog to get real value quickly early on, only to hit the same wall later: runaway costs, pricing tied to architectural decisions, and vendor lock-in so strong it makes Rogers and Bell both blush.
In this talk, Iāll walk through a real-world case study of a JVM-based production system that migrated away from a Datadog-centric observability setup to an open-source, OpenTelemetry-based platform. Weāll dig into the why behind the move, the architectural decisions that mattered, the mistakes along the way, and how the team ended up with pragmatic visibility into latency, errors, and resource usage at a fraction of the cost.
The second half of the talk is practical and forward-looking. Iāll show how OpenTelemetry unlocks real choice by acting as a neutral data plane for your telemetry. From there, weāll look at modern, off-the-shelf observability backends you can plug in within minutes without rewriting applications or installing new agents. Want to dual-write, swap vendors, or route data somewhere new? This is how you do it without a big-bang rewrite or another long-term commitment with a new vendor.
This session is for engineers and CEOs who are feeling the observability cost squeeze, want leverage back from vendors, and are looking for realistic ways to modernize monitoring without lighting their entire stack on fire each time they decide to change their tools of choice.

**Speaker Bio**
Alexei Zenin is a Platform Engineering Consultant based out of Toronto, Canada. Over the course of his career he has worked across the Healthcare, Marketing, Video Games, and Banking industries. He loves to tackle hard problems in the distributed systems space with a focus on scaling platforms both from a technical and process perspective. He is a strong advocate for highly maintainable and well tested code while at the same time pragmatically delivering value to the end user.
He has contributed to the broader tech community, namely to Confluentās blogs on Apache Kafka, spoken at Current 2022 in Austin, Texas, and spoken at XP Game Summit 2025 in Toronto, Canada. During his 5 years at Uken Games he contributed to several games like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Jeopardy. One title of note he saw from inception to completion was a game for Tim Hortons built right into the official app, Timās Word Challenge. Millions of Canadians have played it along with their morning coffee. He also got to work with Netflix on several unannounced games during his time at the studio.
Currently, Alexei is working with various clients, both large and small to modernize and streamline their platforms with the most appropriate tools and practices. Outside of his professional life, he gives back to his community by volunteering at UofT. He also enjoys paddleboarding and attending live rock concerts to reset after long coding sessions.

For all of human history, shelter has been essential for protection, warmth, and survival. Learning how to read the land, choose the right materials, and construct an effective shelter in a way that does not negatively impact the local ecosystem requires knowledge, creativity, and hands-on practice.
In this course we will teach you skills for creating shelters and insulations in wilderness situations. We will discuss shelter and insulation principles, basics of thermoregulation, basic improvised cordage concepts for construction, and how to determine what kind of structures are necessary for various scenarios.
We will be practicing these skills in ways that promote sustainability, ethical conservation principles, and respect for our natural landscapes.

COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 ā 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process.
Fast track
⢠Arrange a time to shadow a COUNT volunteer. Call Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558 (cell).
⢠Show up and try it out.
⢠Complete application, etc. later.
Normal process
⢠Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/).
⢠Attend orientation in advance.
⢠At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility.
⢠Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM.
⢠Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895).
The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014.
Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.

We have a speaker each week so that we can learn about their business.
Because we have only one member per business, we have many of the spots filled. However, we are specifically looking for an estate attorney, a handyman/electrician, and an event planner. We have referrals for you!
