The Great Society Subway: The Origins of Washington's Metro
Twenty years ago, George Mason University professor Zachary Schrag published the definitive history of the Washington Metro: "The Great Society Subway". With the 50th anniversary of the system coming up at the end of March, TEDC founder Will Rice will make a presentation based on the book.
Many elements and conflicts combined to create the Metrorail we now enjoy: a trust in big government projects; the battle over urban highways; the emerging D.C. home rule movement; Black-white relations; and the balance of city and suburban interests. Come learn more about it all!
Also at the meeting: pick up your pre-ordered Metro 50 t-shirt (for new purchases, an order form is [here](https://transitenthusiastsdc.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/t-shirt-order-form.pdf)). And hear the latest news on how we plan to celebrate the system's golden anniversary on March 27!
SFS 1-05 Sloughscar Summit [1-2]
A Starfinder Society Scenario designed for 1st- through 2nd-level characters, playable in 2-3 hours.
Under the leadership of First Seeker Sarmak, the Starfinder Society has established a fledgling lodge in Akiton’s Sloughscar Hills to study a massive, crashed starship known as the Wreck of the Returned. The Starfinder Society isn’t the only group interested in the Wreck. In addition to countless freelancers and independent salvagers, three prominent factions have arisen and are clashing at every turn: the Aspis Consortium, a coalition of local Akitonian salvagers, and a government sanctioned delegation from the planet Aballon. With an eye to improving relations, Sarmak has invited representatives from each of these factions to meet on neutral ground to come to terms.
When danger threatens to disrupt the Sloughscar Summit, it’s up to the Starfinder Society to keep the peace.
This is an adventure in the ongoing Invasion's Edge metaplot.

Profs & Pints DC: Trump, Your Rights, and Resistance
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Trump, Your Rights, and Resistance,”** an overview of the legal landscape in the District of Columbia just over one year into Donald Trump’s second administration, with Scott Michelman, legal director of the ACLU of D.C. and lecturer on law and Shikes Fellow in Civil Liberties and Civil Rights at Harvard Law School.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-trump-rights-resistance](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-trump-rights-resistance) ]
Our nation looks a lot different just over a year after President Trump took office in January 2025. What has actually happened—and what does it mean for our rights?
Get an informed breakdown on the civil rights and civil liberties issues that have defined the period since Trump's second inauguration with Scott Michelman, a legal scholar who last January gave an excellent talk on the legal guardrails potentially checking Trump’s actions.
He’ll discuss what has been happening with immigration policy, criminal justice reform, domestic military deployment, discrimination, and threats to free speech.
He’ll identify troubling patterns, explain where advocates have successfully pushed back in the courts, and outline the unresolved concerns ahead.
The talk will also explore what individuals can do next, from understanding their rights to participating in elections that will shape the future of this administration and our country. (Door: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Express Yourself Without Shyness or Anxiety
*This is another completely different event than ones we've previously held, covering a unique angle on the subject of communication.*
Shyness and anxiety in relationships are often treated as personal flaws or things to “push through.”
Maybe you consider that it is who you are by nature. But if it was something natural, wouldn't you be happy and content with it? Maybe there is more to effectively communicating than just your personality.
This live, in-person workshop explores the subject of communication and precise actions one can take to improve their communication... without changing their personality or being someone they are not.
**You’ll likely relate if:**
* You replay conversations later and think, *“That’s not what I meant.”*
* You hesitate or overthink when it’s time to speak up.
* Conversations drift into tension even when everyone has good intentions.
* You want to connect better—but don’t want scripts or fake confidence.
It’s a **guided, interactive workshop** where you’ll:
* Learn why conversations break down in the first place
* The most common problem people have in any struggle to have a conversation. It's not what you may think!
* Practice being more present and composed in real time
* Leave feeling more comfortable in conversations—without forcing anything
Most people notice a difference **during the session itself**, not weeks later.
**Who this is especially good for**
* Thoughtful, introspective, or introverted people
* Professionals who want clearer communication at work
* Anyone navigating relationships, boundaries, or confidence
* People tired of tips that don’t translate into real life
You don’t need to be outgoing.
You don’t need experience.
You just need curiosity.
This will be held in a group setting with light refreshments served. The location will be easy access for metro and bus stops. There is street parking available as well as a parking garage next to the building.

In-Person Event: The Answers to Depression & Anxiety
This is an in-person meeting. At this meeting you will get answers to depression and anxiety. Find out the source of them and how to get rid of them.
Did you know that unwanted emotions like anxiety, depression, unhappiness, loneliness, hopelessness, anger, fear, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not due to a chemical imbalance in your brain from some nebulous chemical reaction "by chance".
Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you.
The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life.
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life.
Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there.
This group is created by the Hubbard Dianetics Foundation of Central Ohio and Church of Scientology of Central Ohio.

Quarterly Goals Reset for Product Professionals
One of the most valuable parts of this community is the opportunity to think out loud with other product professionals. This session is built for exactly that.
As we wrap up the quarter, it’s a great time to pause and reflect. What’s on track? What needs adjustment? Where could a small shift create bigger impact?
Join fellow product professionals for a focused, interactive conversation designed to help you recalibrate for the next quarter. You’ll have the opportunity to share where you are, hear how others are thinking through similar challenges, and gain fresh perspective you can bring back to your team and organization.
We’ll gather at 8:00AM, with discussion starting promptly at 8:15AM.
