Biased: uncovering the hidden prejudice that shapes what we see & do [in person]
From one of the world's leading experts on unconscious racial bias come stories, science, and strategies to address one of the central controversies of our time.
How do we talk about bias? How do we address racial disparities and inequities? What role do our institutions play in creating, maintaining, and magnifying those inequities? What role do we play? With a perspective that is at once scientific, investigative, and informed by personal experience, Dr. Jennifer Eberhardt offers us the language and courage we need to face one of the biggest and most troubling issues of our time. She exposes racial bias at all levels of society -- in our neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and criminal justice system. Yet she also offers us tools to address it. Eberhardt shows us how we can be vulnerable to bias but not doomed to live under its grip. Racial bias is a problem that we all have a role to play in solving.

Long Point Classic Birding Extravaganza including Ruthven Park
Greetings Bird Lovers,
Why do we keep going to Long Point, well the main reason is the sheer number of birds we can see, there is no place in Southern Ontario that offers the number of birds you can see at this time of year. Our trips to Long Point have always been exceptional.
On our trips we’re treated to an incredible mix of wildlife, Bald Eagles, possibly Snowy Owls, Tufted Titmice, thousands of Sandhill Cranes, and literally thousands of ducks. Every visit feels like stepping into a National Geographic special.
Even in the heart of winter, the slowly lengthening days and brighter light remind us that the outdoors is still full of magic, and moments like these are exactly why we keep heading back out into the field.
Long Point's significance as part of the Canadian Important Bird and Biodiversity Area, as well as its role as the home to Bird Studies Canada, is underscored by the continuous presence of birds throughout the year. This renowned Ontario wintering ground hosts a myriad of species, including waterfowl, Sandhill Cranes, Tundra Swans, and the occasional surprise guest. From the commonplace Bald Eagles to the captivating Birds of Prey such as Red-tailed Hawks, Rough-legged Hawks, Northern Harriers, and American Kestrels, each visit unfolds a tapestry of avian wonders.
Long Point, a globally recognized Important Bird Area (IBA), beckons ornithologists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts worldwide. We're eagerly looking forward to our upcoming birding adventure at this extraordinary location.
A stop at Ruthven Park promises encounters with the charming Tufted Titmouse and possibly wintering Eastern Bluebirds. Additionally, our itinerary remains flexible, allowing us to stay attuned to local birding news for the possibility of rare bird sightings. Nature's surprises often unfold during this season, prompting us to adapt our plans for the chance to witness something truly extraordinary.
Prepare to immerse yourself in the enchanting world of birding at Long Point, a journey of exploration, discovery, and sheer magic.
Whether you're an avid photographer or simply revel in nature's wonders, all are welcome to join. Binoculars are recommended for an enhanced experience.
Our shared love for nature fosters a lively and enjoyable camaraderie within the group. I assure you of smiles, laughter, and a thoroughly delightful day out.
Our rendezvous point is the Finch Station Passenger pick-up and Drop-off. Parking Lot at 7:45 am, with departure promptly at 8:00 am. We anticipate returning around 5:00 pm, having explored various areas southwest of Toronto to maximize our chances of encountering special bird species.
For those interested, I can accommodate up to 3 Nature Lovers in my vehicle.
The cost for my guidance, unveiling the super-hotspots, is $99.00 plus tax, totaling $113. To secure your spot, payment can be made through PayPal or via direct e-transfer to torontonaturelovers@hotmail.com. If you opt for the latter, kindly inform me, and I will manually add you to the trip.
Let's embark on a day filled with nature's wonders, capturing moments that will linger in our memories. We look forward to sharing this adventure with you!
Crochet and Chat meetup - Festive Edition!
**\*\*Festive Edition: As this is the last Thursday session before the holidays, feel free to come in your favourite holiday sweater!\*\***
Welcome to the Mississauga Crochet and Chat Social Group! Whether you're a beginner or an experienced crocheter, join us for a fun meetup to work on your projects and meet new people.
This is an informal social group to chat, meet new people and enjoy some crochet.
**Note:** I chose the library as a central location, this group/event isn't organized by the library.
**Where to meet:** Meet by the information desk on floor 2 of the library.
**Where to park:** the library has an underground parking garage that is free after 6pm on weekdays. It is accessible from Duke of York Boulevard.
**What to bring:** Bring your latest project or pattern to work on, or if your new to crochet just **bring some yarn and crochet hooks** and I can help you get started! If you're looking to learn I can teach you the basic stitches and provide some patterns for you to try.
**What yarn and hooks should I use?** You can bring any kind of yarn you like! If your new and looking to learn the basic stitches, I'd suggest bringing an acrylic yarn thats a "medium" weight and not chunky (you'll see this on the label). The label will recommend what size hook to use in mm, but you can go a size higher or lower without any issues.
The Walmart in Square One sells yarn and hooks; you can also get them on Amazon. Fabricland in Mississauga also has a good selection of yarn and crochet hooks.
Underwater Rugby Practice and Game (Beginner's welcome)
**Welcome to our group! We hope to see you out at the pool soon. We play Fridays 8:30-10pm at Riverdale Collegiate Institute pool. We have lots of spare gear for you to try the game, so there is no need to buy anything before you try U/W Rugby. Just bring your suit and towel. And your first 2 practices are free!**
\*Please note: This game requires swimming. While we do have lifeguards, you must be a competent swimmer and comfortable in the water in order to participate.

Highway 27 industrial eats (11.1 km)
Celebrate the opening of the Finch LRT by travelling to the end of it. Join us at Clairville where 4 cities meet: Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and Vaughan. The area is mostly industrial, but that's where some good food places lurk, drawn by cheap rents. The cuisine here is predominantly Indian. See the most ornate Hindu temple in Toronto and check out its museum.
The nature portion of the hike goes through the gardens and forests of Humber Arboretum (weather permitting). We'll hike through it before sunset. Then, it's on to the neighbourhood defined by Woodbine Racetrack, not to be confused with the Woodbine-Beaches neighbourhood where it was formerly located. It's notable for a mall with an indoor amusement park.
The finishing point is at a casual Somali restaurant, which makes an accessible introduction to the cuisine for the uninitiated. Arrive earlier to check out the flea market because we won't be touring it.
**Highlights**
1. Dr Flea's Flea Market (entrance N, depart 1:30pm)
2. Mr. Khaman / Chaiiwala Of London
3. Elsa's Bakery
4. Samosa And Sweet Factory
5. BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir
6. BAPS Shayona (depart 3:15pm)
7. Gwalia Sweets / La Ciel / Food World Supermarket
8. Humber College Learning Resource Commons (depart 4:15pm)
9. Barrett Centre For Technology Innovation
10. Humber Arboretum
11. Fantasy Fair
12. Xawaash (arrive 5:30pm)
**Neighbourhoods**
Clairville > Humber College > Woodbine Racetrack

If trails are snowy or icy, we will skip Humber Arboretum and go along Highway 27 from Humber College Blvd to Woodbine Mall.
The Finch LRT stops close to the start and end of the hike, but a bus transfer is needed: bus 73 from Albion and bus 927 from Humber College.
**How it works**
Hike starts punctually. Late or can't do the whole route? Meet us at scheduled checkpoints.
We'll browse many food places but won't linger long. Grab ready-made food, or see the route in advance, organize takeout, then pickup along the way.
Not sure what to try? Join our omakase for $5, which gives a tiny sample from different restaurants. Payment on the day of event by cash or e-transfer to [globaltorontoeats@gmail.com.](http://globaltorontoeats@gmail.com.) No refunds after orders are placed. Details of sampled food will be uploaded after the hike.
Limited cutlery provided. Highly recommended to bring cutlery and containers for omakase and bringing back leftovers.

Holiday Blockbuster: AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH (in 3D) at Cinemark Polaris!
Join us as we get together to see an Opening Night showing of the highly anticipated epic fantasy-adventure, AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH! We’ll make this one of our rare 3D movie events! James Cameron returns to direct the 3rd film in the acclaimed series which should be another visually stunning adventure! Here are details, a trailer and our plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: One year after settling in with the Metkayina Clan, Jake and Neytiri's family encounter a new, aggressive Na'vi tribe called the Ash People, led by the fiery tribe leader, Varang, who has allied with Jake's enemy, Quaritch, as the conflict on Pandora escalates to devastating consequences. The film is directed (and co-written) by James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet who all return to reprise their roles from previous films.
TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-vO43w1xXg
PLAN: Details for this event have already been confirmed! Please purchase your ticket for the 6:00pm showing at Cinemark Polaris and meet inside the theater lobby between 5:30 and 5:45pm! This event will sell out so advance ticket purchase as soon as possible is advised! Once you do, please list your seat number in the Comments below!
NOTE ON LOCATION: This one took some time to sort out! Ticket prices for a 3D showing at the various theaters range from $11 to $22+ in a range of theater sizes from tiny/intimate to large auditoriums. Because advance ticket sales have already started, many locations/showtimes are already half-full! So, we went with a showtime (6pm) and seating suitable for a long (3-hr) movie, middle-of-the-pack pricing, and a large enough theater with little/no pre-sales that (hopefully) won’t sell out too quickly. And, did I mention luxury seating! That said, you’ll want to purchase your tickets as soon as possible!
Should be a fun one, Dan
