PRJC FREE Zoom Jazz Talk: Barrelhouse & Boogie Woogie Piano w/Tom Roberts
PRJC FREE Zoom Jazz Talk: Barrelhouse & Boogie Woogie Piano w/Tom Roberts
PLEASE NOTE: RSVP ON MEETUP DOES NOT REGISTER YOU FOR THIS EVENT! YOU MUST REGISTER USING [THIS LINK ](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/prjc-jazz-talk-barrelhouse-boogie-woogie-piano-wtom-roberts-tickets-1983892729559?aff=ebdsoporgprofile)BY 5 PM ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT TO RECEIVE THE LOGIN INFORMATION TO ATTEND THE EVENT! A guided listening adventure from rare original 78s featuring Barrelhouse & Boogie Woogie piano. It's like a concert in your own home. Barrelhouse piano is a high-energy, blues-based style that originated in the early 20th-century, characterized by a driving left-hand rhythm, syncopated melodies, and a raw, dance-focused sound often played in "juke joints". It bridged ragtime and boogie-woogie, featuring techniques like chromatic bass rolls and call-and-response, heavily influencing early jazz. BoogieWoogie is an early form of jazz with wild, improvised piano, and an accented two-beat rhythm. Join Tom Roberts and The Hot Club of Pittsburgh for a guided listening adventure of these musical styles. You'll hear early recordings directly from rare original 78s, including recently acquired mint condition Paramount records, with narrative by Tom about the performers and the music. Live-streamed over Zoom, it will be like Tom is in your own home giving a private show, but you won’t need to check your jewelry or feed him! You’ll hear Will Ezell, Charlie Spand, Blind Leroy Garnett, Cripple Clarence Lofton, Cow Cow Davenport, Little Brother Montgomery and many more rarities in this listening oriented zoom presentation! The Hot Club of Pittsburgh was formed during the pandemic at the insistence of record producer, radio personality, and curator of Jazz at Lincoln Center: Phil Schaap who inspired me to create a listening option to counteract the abysmal local radio scene. Tom Roberts is acknowledged as one of the premiere exponents of early jazz piano and has performed across the globe including performances at The International Stride Summit in Zurich Switzerland and multiple appearances at the prestigious “Jazz in July” at Manhattan’s 92nd St Y with Dick Hyman. [Registration ](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/prjc-jazz-talk-barrelhouse-boogie-woogie-piano-wtom-roberts-tickets-1983892729559?aff=ebdsoporgprofile)required by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight time the day of the presentation to receive the Zoom link. The PRJC has been bringing trad jazz and swing music to the DC area for 52 years in the way of concerts, jams, and talks. Our Jazz Talk series centers around early jazz topics and features top musicians and historians. As these are all hosted on Zoom, you can enjoy them wherever you are. The PRJC began its Jazz Talk series during the pandemic shutdown as a way to support musicians who were less able to work. The series has blossomed into an ongoing project featuring speakers from across the country focusing on trad jazz and swing topics. You can support the PRJC or our Educational Talks and Concerts with a donation using the [Paypal](https://www.paypal.me/PotomacRiverJazzClub) link. More info is on [the Events page of the PRJC web site.](https://prjc.org/prjcevents.html) Video recording of the event will be posted on the [PRJC YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp4E8kJDZm2765ixumDWmAA) channel after it is completed. PRJC’s programs are supported in part by the Maryland State Arts Council and the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County.
Profs & Pints DC: Fake News and War of the Worlds
Profs & Pints DC: Fake News and War of the Worlds
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Fake News and *War of the Worlds*,”** a look at an infamous Orson Welles broadcast as an early lesson on mass media’s dangers, with Daniel H. Foster, associate professor and chair of liberal arts at Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-war-of-worlds](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-war-of-worlds) .] On the evening of October 30th, 1938, somewhere between 6 and 12 million Americans tuned in the radio version of New York City’s experimental Mercury Theater. It was a decision that some, no doubt, came to regret. What they heard was an all-male chorus of talking heads—scientists, journalists, politicians, and military experts—repeatedly telling them that New Jersey was being invaded by Martians. The ensuing hours were alarming ones for those who did not realize they were listening to Mercury Theater on the Air’s adaptation of the classic H.G. Wells science fiction novel *War of the Worlds*. The performance, directed by and starring Orson Welles, pushed the still young medium of radio drama further than many had pushed it before. Its masterful use of music, sound effects, and especially silence showed how radio could ignite the imagination and make listeners fear the worst. Revisit that classic moment in media history, and learn what lessons it holds for us today, with Professor Daniel Foster, who over the years has taught the “War of the Worlds” broadcast as part of courses in radio, theater, and sound studies at several universities. His talk will go beyond the trivia and urban legends surrounding the broadcast and focus on the broadcast itself, to reveal what really happened and why it mattered. He’ll look at the broadcast not just as a moment of public panic, but a daring work of art. Aired during a period of rapid modern change, marked by the rise of dictators in Europe to the recent fiery destruction of the Hindenburg, the “War of the Worlds” broadcast tapped into widespread anxiety about new technologies and invading forces. Often labeled as an early case of “fake news,” it exposed deep questions about the institutions listeners trusted: education, the media, government, and the military. To emphasize the mischief radio can bring to the world, Orson Welles, at the end of the broadcast and in person, compared the radio to a jack-o-lantern and warned us to beware this “invader of the living room.” Answering questions about the performance, its historical context, and radio as a medium—new, blind, and global— isn’t merely an academic exercise. It can help us better understand how fake news works today and how to detect such lies before they cause irreparable harm. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) Image: A Henrique Alvim Corrêa illustration from a 1906 edition of *War of the Worlds* (Wikimedia Commons).

Randy Goldberg’s last family constellation workshop before moving to SantaMonica
Randy Goldberg’s last family constellation workshop before moving to SantaMonica
Family Constellations is a powerful experiential process that allows you to externally map an issue you’re facing, creating a kind of three-dimensional image of the underlying dynamics. What is often felt only internally becomes visible and tangible, revealing hidden patterns that are not accessible through thinking alone. In this work, we acknowledge what is—without judgment—and begin to restore order where there has been disorder. Unconscious burdens, often carried across generations, can be seen and gently released. As these dynamics shift, the system reorganizes, allowing for a deeper sense of clarity, movement, and belonging. $65 1-5pm Randy Goldberg, LMT is a graduate of the DC Hellinger Institute, and of advanced studies in Family Constellation with Heinz Stark of Germany. He is a former Yoga monk, Craniosacral therapist, and a world-renowned astrologer (both Western and Vedic) interviewed by the Washington Post, NPR, and CNN. He has facilitated Family Constellation therapy for individuals and groups for more than 20 years. Comparative Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays Tasting: Germany and Burgundy
Comparative Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays Tasting: Germany and Burgundy
Please plan to join the German Wine Society on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at 7:00 pm for a comparative presentation on Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in Germany and the Burgundy region of France, and tasting of twelve wines to illustrate the varieties of wine made from these grapes in these countries, by our own Annette Schiller. Registrations for this event are due by Tuesday, April 28, 2026, and the price is $55 for GWS members, $62 for non-members. Please be aware that, due to limited supply of the wines and size of the venue, we have a maximum cap of 40 for attendance at this event. Reserve early to avoid disappointment! What comes to your mind when you hear: “Chardonnay” or “Pinot Noir”? Burgundy, of course! That is rightly so. Burgundy is one of the world’s most revered wine regions and unique in focusing on two grape varieties: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. For more than 1000 years Burgundy vintners have understood that different soils and climates give different wines. They have honed their skills to produce wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that reflect the place they are coming from. When you hear: “Germany” – you think Riesling. Riesling also is a terroir expressive grape variety and the Germans know about producing a wine that reflects its place. But Germany is not a mono-varietal wine region like Burgundy. There are many more grape varieties growing successfully here. For more than 1000 years Pinot Noir has been grown in Germany, where it is called “Spätburgunder,” directly translating as “late Burgundy.” Pinot Noir is now the most widely planted red grape in Germany, accounting for 11.8% of all plantings. Chardonnay, in contrast, has only officially been allowed since 1991, though there were earlier trial plantings, and is still only about 2.2% of total cultivation, while Riesling has remained the flagship grape. Climate change presents new opportunities for German vintners. There is an evolution beyond traditional wine styles and grape varieties. At the same time, Burgundy’s prices have soared and wine lovers often get priced out of their favorite wine. Germany offers a genuine alternative. At this tasting we will show you Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from both wine regions side by side. We start with a comparison of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Germany and Burgundy on the regional level. The next flight will be a step-up quality-wise: a comparison on the village level. As a highlight we have a comparison of 1er Cru Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Burgundy and Erste Lage (Germany’s designation of 1er Cru) Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Germany. We will taste 12 wines with many in the upper price bracket. Join us for this one-of-a-kind opportunity to have wines from top Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers from two different but also in some aspects similar regions. It will be fun to discuss the wines during the tasting and it will be very interesting to hear the verdict of the audience on the favorites. The planned wine list is depicted below: Part 1: PINOT NOIR / SPÄTBURGUNDER FLIGHT A: REGIONAL LEVEL Germany: 2023 Weingut von Winning, Pinot Noir Royal, Pfalz Burgundy: 2022 Albert Bichot, Bourgogne FLIGHT B: VILLAGE LEVEL Germany: 2018 Weingut Bercher, Burkheimer, Baden Burgundy: 2022 Domaine Raquillet, Mercurey FLIGHT C: 1er CRU / ERSTE LAGE LEVEL Germany: 2022 Kallstädter Steinacker, Weingut Rings, Pfalz Burgundy: 2022 Volnay Santenots, Domaine Thierry Matrot Part 2: CHARDONNAY FLIGHT A: REGIONAL LEVEL 2021 Weingut Kühling-Gillot, Réserve, Rheinhessen 2022 Maison Vincent Girardin, Cuvée St.-Vincent, Bourgogne FLIGHT B: VILLAGE LEVEL Germany: 2024 Weingut Jülg, Schweigen, Pfalz Burgundy: 2023 Domaine Ferret, Pouilly-Fuissé FLIGHT C: 1er CRU / ERSTE LAGE LEVEL Germany: 2023 Bönningheimer Sonnenberg, Weingut Dautel, Württemberg Burgundy: 2023 Beaune – Grèves, Le Clos Blanc Louis Jadot A tasty buffet of cheeses, bread, crackers, charcuterie, grapes and veggies will be provided to accompany the wines. Our tasting will begin at 7 p.m on Saturday, May 2, 2026, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. to admit guests. While there is not off-street parking at this location, on-street parking is available (bear in mind DC parking restrictions and meters), and there is easy access to Metro, at the Van Ness Red Line station. You can register and pay for this event only by following the instructions on our chapter website, https://germanwinesocietydc.org. In 2019, the 40th session of UNESCO's General Conference decided to proclaim 5 May of each year as "World Portuguese Language Day". The Portuguese language is not only one of the most widespread languages in the world, with more than 265 million speakers spread through all continents, but it is also the most widely spoken language in the southern hemisphere.
