Practical Philosophy Meetup - Toronto 🇨🇦
**NO PHILOSOPHY EXPERTISE REQUIRED!**
**🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌
**📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/B7LyJIeBlaH5VtXkMJTTph?mode=gi_t), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 19:30-19:45 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the official start.
* 19:45-19:55 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 19:55-21:15 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.
* 21:15-21:30 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.
* 21:30 - The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other.
**🧧PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy is operated entirely on voluntary donations! If we are meeting in a café, buy a beverage! Donations are 100% voluntary, but they help us to bring the gift of deep conversation to people around the world. If you'd like to support, you can [donate here](https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/donation-form/donate-to-practical-philosophy)!
(Practical Philosophy is a registered Canadian charity)
**💛 WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
**🗣** “I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” - Ekam
🗣 “I got hooked from day 1 and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” - Daniel
**🤓 FAQ**
* **What will we talk about? What's the topic?**
The topic for the week is shared every Sunday in the Whatsapp group. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you don’t see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/B7LyJIeBlaH5VtXkMJTTph?mode=gi_t).
* **Do I need to study or read anything to attend?**
No preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what you think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it.
* **Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?**
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* **Is it mostly men that attend?**
Surprisingly, no! Although often, philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms.
* **Can I come alone?**
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* **Can I be late?**
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* **Where do you meet?**
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/B7LyJIeBlaH5VtXkMJTTph?mode=gi_t) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/).
🤝**POLICY**
To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment.
**PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY CLUB - Philosophy, everywhere. ✨**
We started in Practical Philosophy back in 2021 and there are now 50+ chapters in over 25 countries, including Canada, Spain, Japan, Mexico and many more! 🗺️

Conscious Living ~ An Experiential Community Program for Embodied Consciousness
### **“Conscious Living”**
**An Experiential Community Program for Embodied Consciousness**
**Ongoing until April 30, 2026** (except for March Break)
**Thursdays, 7:30 PM (in person)**
**Facilitator:** Sophia Barna, M.Ed., M.S.W.
**Location: Toronto Theosophical Society,** 792 Glencairn Ave., Toronto, ON **(Basement Room)**
“Conscious Living” is a weekly experiential program that bridges the study of consciousness with the practical realities of everyday life. Rooted in the *Map of Consciousness* developed by David R. Hawkins and *A Course in Miracles (ACIM)*, this program invites participants to move beyond theory into lived, embodied awareness.
Together, we explore what it means to live “in the world, but not of it” — grounded, present, and engaged, while rooted in higher awareness.
The Map of Consciousness serves as our reference point. Each meeting focuses on a specific state of consciousness, blending study and practice so participants not only understand these states intellectually, but also learn to embody and live them in daily life.
In addition to the Map of Consciousness, A Course in Miracles (ACIM) provides a complementary framework for the program. ACIM offers practical spiritual principles for transforming perception, cultivating forgiveness, and recognizing the inner guidance of love and truth. Its teachings emphasize the shift from fear to love, the release of judgment, and the practice of conscious choice in every moment.
Our gatherings are grounded in the states of Love, Joy, and Gratitude, corresponding to the elevated energy field of 540 on the Map of Consciousness. From this frequency of openness and lightness, we come together to uplift, inspire, and grow in awareness — individually and collectively.
### **✨A Potluck for the Body, Heart, Mind & Soul🌈**
Each session is designed as a holistic experience — nourishing all dimensions of being:
* **🪷 Food for the Soul:** Guided meditation, self-reflection, and self-inquiry
* **🧠 Food for the Mind:** Lectures, presentations, and meaningful group discussions
* **✨ Food for the Body:** Embodied practices (movement and dance meditations), singing, chanting
* **💗 Food for the Heart:** Love-centered connecting and sharing
### **🌸What to Expect**
Together, we will explore different states of consciousness through:
* Lectures and presentations
* Guided meditation
* Self-reflection
* Group discussions
* Movement and dance meditation
* Singing and chanting
### **🌸What to Bring**
1. Coloured clothes — each week a specific colour (ROGVAIV rainbow sequence: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet). *This is an encouraged part of the experience, not mandatory.*
2. Silk or large dancing scarf/veil
3. Notebook, journal, or paper with pens, crayons, markers
4. Your highest vibrational presence in love, joy, and gratitude
This is a space where learning becomes lived experience — where insight meets embodiment.
*To uphold universal brotherhood without distinction and freedom of thought, all elements of the evening are invitational. Participants may opt out of any component and still be welcome, as long as we engage with one another respectfully.*
*This is a participatory series with optional components. In keeping with TTS values, you are welcome to opt in or opt out of any element, and the central expectation is mutual respect.*

Registration **optional** (for updates and materials). Walk-ins welcome.
### **About the Facilitator:**
**Sophia Barna** is an educator and facilitator with a long-standing interest in the relationship between inner life and everyday life: how spiritual principles become livable, embodied realities rather than abstract ideas. Her work bridges consciousness research, reflective inquiry, and practical methods for self-observation and inner transformation. Her background includes graduate training in education and social work, and advanced professional training in EMDR.
In “Conscious Living,” she draws on the Map of Consciousness (as developed by David R. Hawkins) and the spiritual psychology of A Course in Miracles, inviting participants to explore themes such as presence, perception, forgiveness, and the cultivation of love, joy, and gratitude through shared practice and dialogue. Her facilitation style is heart-centered, clear, and experiential, with space for participants to learn through reflection, discussion, and embodied exercises.
***Important distinction:*** While Sophia’s clinical experience, education, and skills shape how she holds the space and communicates, this series does not constitute EMDR therapy, psychotherapy or a clinical solution for mental or emotional problems. It is a group experience offered in the spirit of service and public learning, and it should not replace care from a licensed provider in a private and confidential therapeutic relationship.

Evil Twin Techniques For Real World Exploitation
Most people hear "Evil Twin" and think fake login page at a coffee shop. Harvest some passwords, call it a day.
That's the tutorial version. That's not what this talk is about.
Harold "superkojiman" Rodriguez is going to show what happens when you actually build out Evil Twin infrastructure and use it as a real attack platform. Not just phishing — direct methods of gaining access to target systems. The tooling, the infrastructure, the tradecraft. How a technique most people write off as basic becomes a legitimate entry point in an engagement.
**What we'll cover:**
\- How Evil Twin setups go way beyond credential harvesting
\- Direct methods for gaining access to target systems
\- Attack chains that start with network positioning
\- Real\-world scenarios where these techniques actually matter
\- The defensive gaps most security teams miss
**About the speaker:**
Harold has been doing this for over 15 years. Red team operations, penetration testing, vulnerability research, exploit development — the full spectrum. He's authored boot2root and CTF challenges, built open-source security tools, and written tutorials that have been floating around the community for years. If you've done any offensive security training or CTF work, there's a good chance you've run into his stuff.

Stoa of Ontario Monthly Meeting
**Toronto Stoics: Monthly Meetup**
*Modern Wisdom. Practical Living. Local Community*.
We are a monthly gathering dedicated to exploring Stoic philosophy and its real-world application. Whether you are a long-time practitioner or just curious about how ancient wisdom can help navigate modern life, you are welcome here.
*What to Expect*
Our meetups are casual, conversational, and focused on utility. Each month, we gather at a member's home in Toronto to deconstruct a specific Stoic quote or concept. We move past the theory to discuss how these ideas actually work when the pressure is on—helping us build resilience, focus on what we can control, and refine our character.
*Why Stoicism?*
Simply put, Stoicism was designed to help people live their best possible lives. It is a framework for:
- Maximizing Clarity: Focusing energy on what is within our power.
- Reducing Friction: Managing negative emotions like anxiety and anger.
- Honing Virtue: Cultivating the strength of character to handle any situation.
Stoicism doesn’t require hours of meditation or a degree in philosophy. It is a "boots-on-the-ground" toolkit for finding tranquility and staying effective at any stage of life.
**Join us monthly to find a little more perspective and a lot more practical wisdom.**
Inner Heart of Music

What Can I Do? Invoking Our Sacred Warrior Inner Archetype

Free and open to the public
**What Can I Do? Invoking our Sacred Warrior Archetype**
In times of collective suffering and moral uncertainty, it's easy to fall into helplessness, rage, or inconsolable grief — responses that are deeply understandable, yet quietly paralyzing. This evening, we turn to a more demanding and more fruitful question: **What is *my* place in the work of personal and collective renewal?**
We'll explore this question across four interconnected dimensions:
* inner psychological work,
* spiritual practice as service,
* authentic relational dialogue, and
* practical action in the world.
Each of these plays a distinct role in the broader process of healing — and the evening is designed to show how they reinforce and complete one another.
Rather than staying purely in the realm of ideas, we'll move into direct experience. The highlight of the evening will be a hands-on introduction to KORASOMI — a synthesis of the Korason Method for Authentic Voice & Dialogue and Hakomi — a mindfulness- and somatic-based practice for invoking the "Sacred Warrior" archetype within each of us. Through conscious sound, authentic movement, and chakra work, Hugh will guide us in learning a technique you can take home and continue to practice on your own.
Underlying the whole evening is a simple but radical invitation: to refuse dehumanization, to act without hatred, and to understand that rebuilding integrity — personal or collective — is work each of us carries a small but real portion of.
**About the speaker:**
Hugh Smiley has been walking a path of inner inquiry, healing, and service for over four decades. His journey began early — shaped by his father's healing hands, a classical music training that led to his ARCT from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto at 17, and a deepening interest in spiritual and metaphysical studies that ignited during his university years, including a budding fascination with esoteric astrology.
A pivotal chapter unfolded while living among indigenous peoples in Paraguay, where Hugh began meditating in nature and developed a healing practice rooted in shamanic chanting, bodywork, knowledge of the chakras, and the subtle bodies. This synthesis eventually gave rise to the Korason Method for Authentic Voice and Dialogue — a body-based, heart-centred approach to authentic expression and deep listening that he has since taught in 10 countries across 4 continents.
Hugh trained directly with Ron Kurtz, founder of the Hakomi Method — a somatic-oriented, mindfulness-based approach to assisted self-discovery — becoming certified as both therapist and teacher. His therapeutic work weaves together Hakomi, the Korason Method, dreamwork, shamanic journey, gestalt, and an understanding of the subtle anatomy, creating a rich inner landscape for healing and self-knowledge.
In 1988, following an inner vision, Hugh co-created Heartsong Hill — a 50-acre forested retreat on Georgian Bay — where eight years of transformative teaching and learning unfolded. He later completed a degree in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Toronto, and was awarded the Beattie Scholarship to research dialogue methods with NGOs in Cairo, which led to the founding of NACAD, the New AndaLuz Centre for Authentic Dialogue. He is currently supporting youth peace-building efforts with the ROHI Foundation in Cameroon.
Hugh continues to offer counselling, creative voicework, and meditation coaching in Toronto, and leads a biweekly Mindful Circle online. His life's work is a living example of how inner transformation and outer service are not separate — but two expressions of the same journey.
