OOPS #16 - Humans in the Loop: The Future of Incident Response
*A 'Humans in the Loop' community event with Elastic, Uptime Labs & PagerDuty in collaboration with OOPS!*
We’re taking over the Greenwich Design District for an evening dedicated to the unsung heroes of the stack: **The Humans in the Loop.** AI adoption offers a range of benefits, but while our systems get more complex, the role of the human in incident response has never been more critical.
Come trade your real-time operations stories, share your best 'oops' moments, and learn how to keep the 'human' in your high-availability architecture.
📅 **Date and Time:**
Monday, June 1, from 6:00-9:00 PM
📍 **Location:**
Design District
Address: 19 Soames Walk, London SE10 0AX, UK
**What to expect:**
* 🎤 **Lightning Keynotes** \- short\, sharp and stimulating\, local experts share their takes\.
* 🍻 **Sip & Savour:** Delicious pizza and refreshing drinks to fuel the conversation.
* 🤝 **The OOPs Group:** Connect with the outage ops + incident response community, because misery loves company, but resilience loves a party.
🧠 **Talks**
**Many Humans in Many Loops** by **Carly Richmond**, Developer Advocate Lead (Elastic)
*Human in the Loop, or HITL, provides us the ability to validate AI output using friendly and knowledgeable humans. But is that the only human loop in AI incident management systems? Join Carly as she covers other human loops, including reinforcement learning with feedback and context engineering, and how loops with a low threshold encourage alert fatigue.*
**Incident Response Reimagined: Accelerating Resolution with AI Agents** by **Daniel Afonso**, Senior Developer Advocate (PagerDuty)
*Learn how PagerDuty is leveraging Agentic AI to transform the incident lifecycle from reactive firefighting to proactive prevention.*
*Daniel demonstrates how new tools like the SRE Agent and Scribe Agent assist engineers during high-pressure outages by autonomously triaging alerts, querying logs in tools like Grafana, and transcribing context directly into incident channels.*
*Beyond immediate response, this demo highlights a "shift left" strategy using the new PagerDuty MCP server and Claude Code plugin, which allows developers to assess the risk of code changes against historical incident data before deployment, ultimately aiming to reduce the frequency of on-call.*

Amberley to Worthing – South Downs backcountry paths & Cissbury Ring
**WHAT TO EXPECT - HIKING INFO**
Distance: **25km** (c. 15 miles)
Ascent: c. **585m**
Estimated Duration (approx): **7 hours walking (moderate pace 4km/hr)**
Difficulty: **Energetic**
**HIGHLIGHT**
· Great views from Amberley Mount and Rackman Hill
· Undulating paths over the downs heading south towards Worthing
· Slow ascents and descents on remote paths away from South Downs Way
· Visit the ancient and most historic hill fort in Sussex – The Cissbury Ring.
· Optional sea swim at the end!
**DESCRIPTION**
*This walk is on paths less travelled over South Downs rolling hills with fantastic views along the way. There is an optional sea swim at the end for those who want to cool off after a good day’s walk.*
This is a beautiful part of the south downs with fantastic views and rolling hills - and with some neolithic and bronze age history along our way.
We start our walk in Amberley as we head up our first hill onto the South Downs to Rackman Hill for fantastic views looking north towards the North Downs – hopefully we will have good views on the day.
We then head south over rolling hills and forlorn paths, meeting locals who know the less travelled parts of the south downs. I have chosen a route which meanders past other settlement hills and hopefully with views over to the sea. We pass Finden for a refreshment stop after 14km (no pub stops before then).
We then head over to Cissbury Ring – the oldest hill fort on the South Downs Way. It boasts much history - a neolithic flint mines, bronze age burial ground, iron age hill fort, a roman mint, a tudor vantage point before it was investigated archeologically by the Victorians. Then onto Worthing for a drink and a swim!
Option at this stage is to head back to London or go down to Worthing Pier and have a swim.
*ps. My walks make time to enjoy the views, take in local history, and look at interesting buildings along the way.*

**📕ABOUT:**
\- A proper London\-edge adventure that strings together two of the capital’s most underrated wild spaces in a single walk — ancient Epping Forest and the lakes and waterways of the Lee Valley\.
\- We start at Chingford\, where Queen Victoria opened the Forest to the people in 1882\, then head straight in past Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge and pretty Connaught Water\.
\- From there it’s miles of rolling\, knobbly oak and beech woodland — some trees as old as the Anglo\-Saxons — climbing gently to the High Beach ridge at 115m\, the day’s high point\.
\- A long\, lovely descent through Sewardstone drops us out of the trees and into the Lee Valley: marshes\, lakes\, reedbeds\, and the calm of the Lee Navigation towpath all the way into Cheshunt\.
——
**⭐️HIGHLIGHTS:**
* **Chingford & Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge:** 1543 Tudor grandstand on the edge of the Forest.
* **Connaught Water:** peaceful early-morning lake, popular with herons and swans.
* **Epping Forest ancient woodland:** 5,900 acres of veteran oaks, beeches and hornbeams; some trees as old as the Anglo-Saxons.
* **High Beach ridge:** the day’s high point, classic Forest views.
* **Sewardstone:** the Forest’s quiet western edge, opening into farmland.
* **River Lee Country Park:** lakes, wetlands and excellent birdwatching.
* **Lee Navigation towpath:** tranquil canal walking right into Cheshunt.
——
**💷COST: Free**
This hike is completely free to join but participants need to purchase their own transport tickets.

Powell Gold Star Referral Club Meetup
We meet at lunch each week and each meeting follows a fairly organized agenda. First all participants pass their business cards around. Then each member and guest is invited to give a one-minute overview of their company and what is a perfect referral for the week. We always have a 10 minute presentation from one of the members about their business in more detail. And finally we pass referrals. You're welcome to visit. Nobody is ever put on the spot. Bring plenty of cards!

Feel Good Friday: POWER BALLAD at the Gateway Film Center + SHAKE NO. 8!
Join us as we get together to see Paul Rudd in the latest comedy-drama-musical from John Carney, POWER BALLAD! The film follows a washed-up wedding singer, a fading boy band singer and a stolen hit song. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick's song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves. Power Ballad is written/directed by John Carney, the master of the modern musical and creative mind behind Once, Begin Again and Sing Street! It stars Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor.
BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Dublin International Film Festival where critics call it “a sure-fired crowd-pleaser” that “just might be the feel-good hit of the year!” Others say, “Paul Rudd delivers a career-best performance in this charmer” that’s both “hilarious and deeply moving." The film continues John Carney’s “long run of success with yet another charmer” and “a sharp, hopeful crowd-pleaser that strikes the right notes!”
