ANSARI QADIRI RIFAI ZIKR - EVERY TUESDAY
ANSARI QADIRI RIFAI ZIKR - EVERY TUESDAY
ANSARI QADIRI RIFAI SUFI ORDER (AQRT) - UK TUESDAY ZIKR/MEDITATION The Ansari Qadiri-Rifai Sufi Order (London branch), under the guidance of Shaykh Taner Vargonen Ansari, is pleased to invite men and women, regardless of your faith or beliefs to our weekly Tuesday zikr. We are a Sufi order whose origins started with two great Saints of early Sufism: Shaykh Abdul Qadir al Geylani and Shaykh Ahmed er Rifai. Our Tradition is one of inclusiveness and of welcoming. This tradition has passed down to us through the current Spiritual Guide of the Order: Shaykh Taner Vargonen Ansari, who now resides in New York and is helping establish Sufism in the West. Come, Come whoever you are, wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving. Our's is not a caravan of despair. Come even if you have broken your vows a thousand times, Come, come yet again. (Mevlana Rumi) Sufism is the spiritual/ mystical path of Islam. During the Zikr (the ceremony of remembrance) we practice some simple movements accompanied by frame drumming, hymn singing and chanting. In Zikr, each member of the group effaces him or herself in the remembrance of God using the energy of the entire group synergistically for the development of all. We start at 19:15 with the group zikr for about one hour. We welcome everyone who comes in peace. The Zikr is free but a donation to help with the venue hire would be greatly appreciated. We hope to see you soon. Please contact : Rita on 07941 653337 (ritaglh@yahoo.co.uk) or Reeyaaz on 07875 569921 (smreeyaaz@gmail.com) if you want any information about our Sufi order or Sufism in general.
Silver Tuesdays Nordic Walking in Brockwell Park
Silver Tuesdays Nordic Walking in Brockwell Park
Over the last nine years, Silverfit has been able to offer exercise to everyone over 50 in Brockwell Park. Together with Silverfit, I have done my best to keep the exercise fun for everyone, no matter if you are fit or not so fit, strong or not so strong, sporty or not so sporty. And, over all, I think we have done that pretty well! We have had some glorious years, and we made many, many friends over that time. Silverfit managed to keep it going through the good times and the hard Covid years, but unfortunately, the reality of the current economic climate is hitting Silverfit hard. Many councils and charities that have supported Silverfit over the years have stopped funding, and without funding, Silverfit just simply cannot keep going. Recently, they have had to take the hard decision to cut quite a number of their activities, and unfortunately, Nordic Walking in Brockwell park is one of the sessions that needs to be stopped. Yesterday afternoon was our last session for Silverfit. But…. I aim to keep your Tuesday walk going! So many of you love our Tuesday session, and it would just be too sad to stop completely. I would like to keep the Silver Tuesday session going under my own company, Fit and Happy Outdoors. Sadly, I cannot do this for free, as I do need to make a living. But in order to keep this session available for everyone, I plan to keep our Tuesday afternoon session at a highly reduced rate compared to my normal rates. New rates for our Silver Tuesday walks: 10 sessions for £45 (my normal rate is 10 sessions for £90). For those of you who struggle financially, I am happy to reduce this rate to £30, or even offer it for free. I can of course only do this if enough of you pay the normal rate, and I trust you will only ask for a reduction if you really need it. As I said, I do this for my living, but I don’t want money to be the reason you miss out on the benefits of Nordic Walking and spending time with our lovely group of friends. If you are already a member of Fit and Happy Outdoors and you pay monthly, then the Tuesday session is included in your fee. No extra payment is necessary (unless you’d like to sponsor someone who cannot pay) How does it work? 1) Please email me at Ailien at Fitandhappyoutdoors dot com, and let me know if you agree with me sending you an invoice for the full rate, or if you need a reduced rate. 2) I will then send you an invoice with my bank details on it. 3) Once I have received your payment in my bank account, I will hand you a 10-session card at the first session I see you 4) Every time you come walking on Tuesday, I will stamp your card 5) Once you have walked 10 times, I will send you a new invoice for the next 10. Payment: I really, really, prefer bank transfers. If you really do not do bank transfers, then you can pay me in cash. No cheques please (I really try to avoid having to go to the bank, it is just too much hassle). If you or a friend only comes once in a very blue moon, then they can pay £5 in cash for the session (only banknotes please. Help a girl out, I do enough weightlifting already 😊) Are you a walk leader? You are always welcome and do not have to pay me. I am grateful for your help! Do we still need to sign up? 1) Have your own poles? No need to sign up. But, if there is a weather warning, please check in with me as I might have to cancel and if I don’t know you are planning to come, I might not be able to tell you it’s cancelled 2) Happy to use the Meetup app, then sign up for your walk here? If you sign in, I will know you are planning to come, and it will be easy for me to let you know if I do need to cancel a session. 3) Need to borrow poles from me? Please text me ON THE DAY OF THE WALK to ask me to bring a set. My number is 078 078 3456 4. Just use normal text, no Whatsapp please, as I will probably miss your message. Any questions? Feel free to reply to this email, or text me on the number above.

LCC CITY DRIFTING: Isle of Dogs to Thamesmead [WEST LONDON]
LCC CITY DRIFTING: Isle of Dogs to Thamesmead [WEST LONDON]
Welcome back ramblers, rovers, loungers and loafers and happy 2026! It's a new year, but we're picking where we left off, in the onetime capital of cockney London with its dockworkers and gangsters, the Isle of Dogs - which became the landing-pad for an invasion of alien Thatcherites in the 1980s with the construction of Canary Wharf, which now towers over the council estates and parklands of this misunderstood peninsula. From there we'll head west, looking eventually to end up in the Brutalist wonderland (featured in Kubrick's *Clockwork Orange*!) of Thamesmead, possibly by way of the free Woolwich Ferry service from north shore to south. Meet at Canary Wharf station, out in front of the big curved class canopy. Elizabeth Line services at Abbey Wood will get us home. See you there! Check planned TfL disruptions here - our day should be all clear for most everybody: https://content.tfl.gov.uk/planned-track-closures.pdf A little background on our City Drifting project here: **Now just wait a minute. What the hell is a drift ([dérive](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%A9rive))?** A drift is any unplanned journey through the urban landscape in which participants practice a form of radical mindfulness, collectively exploring new ways of relating mentally, ideologically and materially to the "ordinary" urban environment we all think we know so well. First theorised publicly by Situationist thinker, artist and provocateur Guy Debord in his 1956 essay *[Theory of the Dérive](https://libcom.org/article/theory-derive-guy-debord)*, drifting is a sort of *critique of ideology* done by walking, looking, and feeling. **The urban environment of London is not a neutral space:** it is packed with surveillance equipment, anti-homeless architecture, consumerist [Gruen transfers,](https://www.smartcapitalmind.com/what-is-the-gruen-transfer.htm) crowd management systems and security perimeters, among a thousand other subtle and not-so-subtle methods of population control. Moreover, our everyday relationship to the city and its pathways is conditioned deeply by our habits of movement and our habitual perceptions: our commute to work, to school, our nips down to the shops, etc. **All these routines create what Marxists call a *reified* relationship with the urban environment: through over-familiarity it becomes something seemingly natural, "just there", ordinary, unchangeable - boring.** This boredom and familiarity kills the radical imagination, without which we're fucked. To be able to start to imagine how society could be transformed, we also need to imagine how spaces, buildings, their use, their whole purpose (and who these serve) could themselves be transformed. A necessary step in this process, according to Debord and the Situationists, is the drift. Like the 19th-century gentleman *[flâneur](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fl%C3%A2neur),* by wandering the city with an attitude of "fresh eyes", we can shake loose our ingrained sense of what London and its streets are like. **As a collective, we will work to "estrange our senses" and see the streets, buildings and people differently, as if we were encountering them for the first time.** That is to say: these aren't just random walks around London - with the right frame of mind, they will be opportunities to turn the world upside down, if only for a moment! But don't take it from me - as Debord observed: *"In a dérive one or more persons during a certain period **drop their relations, their work and leisure activities, and all their other usual motives for movement and action, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.** Chance is a less important factor in this activity than one might think: from a dérive point of view cities have [psychogeographical](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychogeography) contours, with constant currents, fixed points and vortexes that strongly discourage entry into or exit from certain zones."* See you on the streets comrades, and remember, as [Raoul Vaneigem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raoul_Vaneigem) once wrote: *"All space is occupied by the enemy. We are living under a permanent curfew. Not just the cops — the geometry".*

LCC RUNNERS: Thames Path Putney to Chiswick [4-5km] INTERMEDIATE
LCC RUNNERS: Thames Path Putney to Chiswick [4-5km] INTERMEDIATE
**Welcome back to LCC's Trail Running Club! For this one, we're making moves in a different direction with a mixed paved and trail run down the Thames Path from Putney to Chiswick.** **We'll be looking at a roughly 45-60 minute run, covering around 5 kilometres or thereabouts on flat surfaces, suitable for confident beginners and experienced runners alike.** Our route will take us from the anti-fascist International Brigades Memorial at the eastern end of Bishops Park, right next to Putney Bridge Tube Station. Details on the memorial and its location can be found here: https://www.londonremembers.com/memorials/hammersmith-and-fulham-international-brigade From there we'll run westward along the Thames Path along paved path and trails, finishing the running portion most likely at Dukes Meadows and cooling off with walking and stretching until we reach Chiswick Bridge, close to Chiswick station. Toilets are available at Bishops Park. Take care and see you on the trails! Our standard bit of info about our running group and why it's good is provided below: \-\-\-\-\- Humans evolved to run and sprint; no wonder then that when we do it regularly (within moderation and with plenty of rest days), our brains as well as bodies thank us. Running has recently been shown to [improve neuroplasticity,](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6148340/) heal [brain damage](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6148340/) in affected individuals, and foster [better mental health](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/the-truth-behind-runners-high-and-other-mental-benefits-of-running) including elevated mood at rest and enhanced task-switching ability. Doing all this in nature, as opposed to busy London roads dodging commuters and street cleaners, also helps deliver the well-known [benefits](https://mcpress.mayoclinic.org/mental-health/the-mental-health-benefits-of-nature-spending-time-outdoors-to-refresh-your-mind/) of time spent in nature to mood, anxiety levels, cognition and memory. All these things matter a great deal in an age where burnout and exhaustion are a constant presence either in our own lives or those of the people we care about [who you should totally invite along]. It matters especially for people trying to eke out a percentage of their time and mental capacity for transformative social and political organising: the better we feel, the more we'll be able to do. In a nutshell, running is great for you and you should do it. Trail running is even better. Best of all is doing all this with a supportive group of comrades, especially one which includes knowledgeable folks who can provide some structure to what can be a puzzling sport to get started with if building up to something, like a 10k or half marathon, is your goal. Part of our running group's programming will be building a series of events aimed at building people up, slowly but surely, towards specific goals, using progressive programmes similar to the [NHS's Couch to 5k](https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/get-active/get-running-with-couch-to-5k/) system. \-\-\-\-\- Take care and see you on the trails!

Contra dance Feb. 21 (First Unitarian Universalist Church) note new time!
# **Band: Old Possum's Menagerie; Caller: Richard Ades** Beginner lesson at 1:30, regular dancing begins at 2:00 pm NOTE THAT WE ARE TEMPORARILY DANCING IN THE AFTERNOON INSTEAD OF EVENING. Dance with us in the afternoon then you can still go out in the evening! **Sponsor: All Soles Contra and Square Dancing, First Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd., Columbus OH 43214** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 1:30 - 2:00, followed by dancing 2:00 - 430. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. Please bring your own refillable water bottle.
