Welcome to the third edition of the Cafe Crawl series! 🥐☕ This time we're heading just outside the city center to explore the cafes of the Vaartsche Rijn area and further down in the south of Utrecht. We meet at Vaartsche Rijn station and from there we'll take a scenic walk along the canals and waterways of this quieter, lesser-known part of Utrecht, stopping at three carefully selected cafes along the way. At each stop we'll sit down, enjoy something to eat or drink, and get to know the people around us. You'll be put in small groups that switch a few times, so by the end you'll have had genuine conversations with a good mix of people. How it works: We walk, we discover, we eat something delicious, and we meet new people. The focus is on being in the moment, enjoying the city, and good company. ⚠️ If you're unsure whether you can make it, please free up your spot for someone else.

Среди книг, что мы читаем в клубе, имя Саида встречается регулярно. Кто-то соглашается с ним, кто-то спорит, кто-то попросту не до конца понимает. В любом случае, понятие ориентализма остаётся одной из отправных точек для множества актуальных академических работ. Давайте попробуем разобраться в нём вместе. **Аннотация** *В центре внимания автора исследования — генеалогия европейской мысли о «Востоке», функционирование этого умозрительного концепта и его связь с реальностью. Автор подробно характеризует возможные истоки этого концепта, поднимая проблему «канона». Но основной фокус его рассуждений сосредоточен на сложных отношениях трех структур: власти, академического знания и искусства в рассуждениях и действиях различных деятелей политики, науки и литературы в XIX веке. Саид доказывает, что интертекстуальное взаимодействие сформировало идею («платоновскую сущность») «Востока» — образ, который лишь укреплялся из поколения в поколение как противостоящий идее «нас» (европейцев). Это противостояние было связано с подчинением территорий, необходимостью говорить «за» колонизированные народы, формулируя свои «правила игры» со стороны метрополий и их представителей. Все эти идеи получали свое отражение в реальности — в войнах, колонизаторских завоеваниях, деятельности колониальных администраций, а впоследствии и в реализации крупных стратегических проектов, например, в строительстве Суэцкого канала. Автор находит связь этих идей и с современным ему миром, например, с американской политикой на Ближнем Востоке. Techiniques are involved drawing pictures, patterns, and letters on the surface of lacquerware using lacquer, and then sprinkling and fixing metal powder, such as gold or silver, onto the surface. Come and join us for an evening of Buddhist meditation with like-minded people. The doors open at 7:00 PM, and meditation begins promptly at 7:15 PM. The meditation will last between 30 to 40 minutes, followed by tea and biscuits for anyone who would like to stay and chat.
