Beach Tennis in Singapore? Try it for yourself
Beach Tennis in Singapore? Try it for yourself
Most people in Singapore haven’t tried beach tennis yet — and honestly, that’s part of the appeal. It’s fast-paced like tennis, social like volleyball, and played barefoot on sand. You don’t need prior experience, and the learning curve is surprisingly quick. Beach tennis is big in Brazil, and it’s now starting to pick up in Singapore. Sessions are run by Pacific Beach Tennis Academy, which is Singapore's first dedicated beach tennis academy. If you’re looking to: – try a new sport without pressure – meet people in a more relaxed setting – or just switch things up from your usual workouts this might be worth checking out. Sessions are beginner-friendly, and all equipment is provided. If you’re keen or have any questions, feel free to message Luke at 8950 0295. You can learn more about Pacific Beach Tennis Academy here as well: Website: https://pbta.sg/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pbta.sg/

** THE SPECTACULAR JAPAN NORTHERN ALPS & ALPINE ROUTE TRAIL! **
PS: This Trip may be combined with our **TOHOKU SPRING FLOWERS ADVENTURE.** Click here - [https://www.meetup.com/travel-leisure-care/events/312417749](https://www.meetup.com/travel-leisure-care/events/312417749) \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* **" AWESOME. PICTURESQUE. INSPIRING. OVER-WHELMING!"** *"Trekking beside the riverbanks in Japan Alpine region, I was overwhelmed by the sheer beauty and awe-inspiring scene that stood before me. The grandeur and splendour of these majestic mountains reflected on crystal-clear lakes and rivers is truly awe-inspiring! To me, no words will ever be able to truly describe the serenity and natural beauty of this place. Having experienced the peace and tranquility of paradise, I just had to share this place with you .. my very own TLC members."* David Lim - TLC Founder / Organizer \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* **TRIP HIGHLIGHTS:** **KAMIKOCHI** Known to the locals as Japan's most spectacular Alpine mountain sceneries, this region is only open from late April until early Oct and shuts down during winter. The scenic trekking trails on the lower region is roughly 15 km along a plateau beside crystal-clear waters on the Azusa River Valley, about 1500 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by breath-taking snow-capped mountains, including the *Nishihotakadake (2909 m), Okuhotakadake (3190 m), Maehotakadake (3090 m)* peaks and the active volcano *Yakedake (2455 m)* all offering spectacular views and challenges to mountain hikers. As part of the **Chubu Sangaku National Park**, this region has only been moderately developed with a few lodges and bridges preserving it's natural beauty. All private transport are banned here, and access to this alpine trail is quite a daunting challenge as it only possible by local public bus ([http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2015.html](http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2015.html)) (need to change 3 different buses) or by approved taxi (very costly). The serenity and beauty that awaits you however far outweighs the effort taken to get there. **TAKAYAMA** \- Ancient Old World Charm Located in the heart of the Japanese Alps, **TAKAYAMA** is best known for its inhabitants' expertise in carpentry. It is believed carpenters from Takayama worked on the Imperial Palace in Kyoto and on many of the temples in Kyoto and Nara. The town and its culture, as they exist today, took shape at the end of the 16th century, when the Kanamori clan built Takayama Castle. About a hundred years later the city came under the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokugawa_shogunate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokugawa_shogunate)). However, the high altitude and separation from other areas of Japan kept the area fairly isolated, allowing Takayama to develop and preserve its own charm and culture over a 300-year period. A hike or cycling around the village exploring its charms will bring you back to the Samurai era. **SHIRAKAWA-GO** This is a mountain village located at the highest peak on **Mount Haku** in the Ryōhaku Mountains, where it borders Ishikawa prefecture. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995, they are famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old. **Gassho-zukuri** means "constructed like hands in prayer", as the farmhouses' steep thatched roofs resemble the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer. The architectural style developed over many generations and is designed to withstand the large amounts of heavy snow that falls in the region during winter. The roofs, made without nails, provided a large attic space used for cultivating silkworms. **KUROBE-ALPINE SCENIC ROUTE** with its amazing **20m Snow-Wall.** Experience hiking along 20 Metre high snow-wall and stunning vistas and unique landscapes as you travel over, above, and even under the majestic Mt. Tateyama. Stop off to enjoy a stroll through flower filled meadows or steaming volcanic valleys. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine (pronounced “Alpen”) Route is known as the **“Roof of Japan”**. The route passes through the dynamic scenery of **Mt. Tateyama** in the Japan Alps. **KUROBE DAM** It is traversed using a variety of vehicles eg. Ropeway, Cable-car, Trolley Bus etc. with an elevation change of 2400 meters from Toyama Prefecture to Nagano Prefecture. Tateyama is home to many rare species of plant. It takes many years for these plants to grow and bloom. **TOYAMA** Nestled between the dramatic peaks of the Japanese Alps and the shimmering waters of Toyama Bay, Toyama is a breathtaking blend of nature, culture and culinary delight. Famous for it's picturesque castle, the spectacular Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and its snow walls, this coastal gem also tempts with some of Japan’s freshest seafood. Stroll along the tranquil Kansui Park at sunset and feel the calm. Toyama is serene, authentic and beautifully untouched—an unforgettable escape from Japan’s usual tourist trail. **"ON-SEN"** \- Soak in Japanese Hot Springs Hot springs have a very long history in Japan, and they are an intimate part of Japanese culture. There are over 3,000 “onsen” – or hot springs – in Japan, many which can be found at the ryokans listed at Japanese Guest Houses. At many ryokans, there will be large indoor onsen for both men and women. Or they may often have several pools with wall-length windows where you can look out over a garden, river, or another natural setting. The interior may be lined with natural rocks and decorated with various kinds of tropical plants. **TOKYO/ NAGANO/ TOYAMA/ TAKAYAMA STREET-FOOD ADVENTURES!** Tokyo, Japan’s bustling capital, mixes the ultra modern and the traditional, from neon-lit skyscrapers and anime shops to cherry trees and temples. The city is famed for its nightlife in **Shinjuku**, vibrant food scene, and its **Shibuya** and **Harajuku** districts are the heart of its trendy teen fashion scene. Here ... anything goes and as adventurers, we're ready to check it out! :) \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- Yes, the **Japan Northern Alps** is a region of awesome beauty, charm, history and great food! With award-winning UNESCO World Heritage sites, this vast area is still largely unexplored by tourists, especially it's spectacular alpine scenery. Having led several groups there to this breathtaking region, I invite you to join me in this awesome experience - trekking through snow-capped mountains, hiking along beautiful streams and rivers, staying in a capsule hotel, soaking in a mineral rich onsen, walking through 20 metre snow-walls, trying out Japanese delicacies etc and more. This special self-designed adventure that brings you to explore the Northern Alp's history and beauty spiced with different experiences is not your usual tour package offered by normal tour agencies. We will be on an adventure taking various modes of transport eg. the bullet train, cable car, trolley bus, ropeway, tram etc to access some of the remote parts of the Northern Alps inaccessible to private vehicles. You will have a chance to stay in different types of accommodation eg. at a capsule hotel, ryokan, spa hotels, samurai villages etc. subject to availability. A certain level of basic fitness eg. ability to hike at least 15 km; having a spirit of adventure to explore new places and willingness to look after and care for each other as a Team is a must. Trails & Ales! Blendon Woods Metro Park / Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery
Trails & Ales! Blendon Woods Metro Park / Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery
**History** The history of [Blendon Woods Metro Park](https://www.metroparks.net/parks-and-trails/blendon-woods/) began long before its 1951 opening, rooted in a landscape of rugged ridges and deep ravines that made the land unsuitable for traditional farming. In 1945, a report proposing a metropolitan park system for Franklin County specifically highlighted these cliffs of Bedford Shale as some of the "wildest land in the vicinity". Following this recommendation, the recently formed park district purchased the first 229 acres in early 1949. Because the terrain was so uneven, developers had to cut a mile-and-a-half-long roadway through dense woods just to bring in heavy equipment. This initial preservation effort ensured that the mature second-growth hardwood forests remained largely untouched by the urban expansion spreading toward Westerville. Opening day arrived on Labor Day, September 3, 1951, marking Blendon Woods as the second park in the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system. The final push to open was a frantic race; the State Highway Department only finished the primary gravel access road four days before the gates opened. Early staff members, consisting of just four full-time employees, had to hand-dig pit toilets and learn construction skills on the fly to build the first picnic shelters. Despite the dusty conditions and limited facilities, the park was an immediate success, drawing massive crowds from across Central Ohio. By the end of the 1950s, annual visitation had already climbed to over 190,000 people. As the surrounding suburbs grew in the 1960s, the park faced severe overcrowding that threatened its natural habitats. In response, Franklin County voters passed the first Metro Parks levy in 1960, providing the funds necessary for a decade of steady expansion. During this era, the park nearly doubled in size, growing from 264 acres to over 570 acres by 1968. Planners also addressed a critical water shortage by collaborating with the U.S. Soil and Conservation Service to build a lake in 1964. This body of water originally served as a temporary reservoir before its role shifted toward conservation and wildlife support. The 1970s marked a transition toward the specialized wildlife and educational focus for which the park is known today. In 1971, the Walden Waterfowl Refuge was established around the 11-acre Thoreau Lake, creating a sanctuary that remains restricted to provide a quiet habitat for migratory birds. A formal nature center was also developed during this period, expanding on the guided Sunday walks that had been a park staple since the early 1950s. The park’s famous "Monarch Mansion" also became a prominent fixture, starting a long tradition of raising and releasing thousands of monarch butterflies each September. These initiatives cemented the park’s reputation as a premier destination for birders and nature enthusiasts. In more recent decades, Blendon Woods has continued to modernize while maintaining its wilderness character. The 10-acre Natural Play Area was added in 2017, encouraging kids to explore the ravines and woods off-trail. This was followed by the opening of a $1.5 million inclusive playground in April 2025, designed to accommodate children of all physical abilities. The nature center also underwent major renovations to include immersive, three-dimensional exhibits and a new butterfly house. Today, the park encompasses 653 acres, preserving a unique geologic and biological corridor amidst the bustling Westerville and Northeast Columbus area. **Map of the Park** Here is a map of [Blendon Woods](https://www.metroparks.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/BLN_map_Inclusive-Playground-and-Butterfly-Trail_May-2025_1980px.png). **Summary** For this event, we will hike the Lake View, Hickory Ridge, Ripple Rock, Overlook, Brookside, and Sugarbush Trails. This sounds like a lot, but it will really be only a little over five miles. Blendon Woods has a few hills here and there, but it's not one of the more strenuous metro parks. **Where We'll Meet** We'll meet just in front of the Nature Center. This is about a mile into the park from the main entrance. You have to go past the Ranger Station and the Shadblow Reservable Area to get to it, so don't stop too early at the Ranger Station and get it confused with the Nature Center. **After the Hike** Afterward, we will head over to [Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery](https://forbiddenroot.com/restaurants/columbus-ohio/) at Easton for [drinks](https://forbiddenroot.com/restaurants/columbus-ohio/#dinner-menu) and [food](https://forbiddenroot.com/wp-content/uploads/Cbus-Food.pdf). We should be there by 5 if you can't make the hike and just want to join us for drinks. The brewery's actual address is [4080 Worth Ave, Columbus, OH 43219](https://www.google.com/maps/place/4080+Worth+Ave,+Columbus,+OH+43219/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x88388a86d10b6619:0x4d42b470a5cf11d3?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111); however, I recommend pointing your GPS to the [Worth Garage](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Worth+Garage/@40.0542293,-82.9137962,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x88388b4df6082825:0x17582f0eccd9dda1!8m2!3d40.0542293!4d-82.9137962!16s%2Fg%2F11rzfvvv8b?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDQxNS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) across the street.
