Socrates Cafe
Socrates Cafe
Socrates Cafe reboot. \-\-\-\-\-\- For all of those who have been coming to the Socrates Cafe in Panera in Rockville, off of East Jefferson Street. The organizer stepped back from biweekly meetings to monthly. We are trying to help him out and return to biweekly meetings. The time and place is the same, Saturday the 21st from 6:30pm-8:30pm (at Panera off East Jefferson Street). For the discussion topics we can vote on them and choose when everyone arrives. A couple ideas that came to mind: What role does reading play in today's society given all the other media options we have? and What are the benefits and disadvantages of public versus private education in the United States? We hope to bring back the biweekly meetings. We miss seeing everyone and the great community we have found at Socrates Cafe. Bring a +1 if you want and spread the word. For now we'll just focus on trying to resume this weekend, and be more organized for the next meetup in a few weeks. Also often we meetup after for a bite and to hang out, sometimes at Silver Diner next door.
ClubFeminist - Join our first gathering
ClubFeminist - Join our first gathering
**Feminists unite**! *Join us for the very first meeting of ClubFeminist.* This inaugural gathering will be an opportunity for founding members (you!) to meet, get to know one another, and begin an open conversation about feminism, gender expectations, and what equality means in our lives today. This first event will focus on creating a welcoming space for thoughtful dialogue. We’ll introduce the vision for ClubFeminist, hear from attendees about what topics matter most to them, and discuss the kinds of conversations and events we’d like to build together. **Some questions we may explore:** • What does feminism mean to you? • What challenges do women still face today? • How can men be better allies in advancing equality? • What kinds of conversations or activities would you like this group to host? This is a **founding meeting**, so your voice will help shape the direction of the group moving forward. I started this group because I was surprised a space like this didn’t already exist locally. Conversations about equality feel more important than ever, and this group is meant to be a place where they can happen openly and thoughtfully. If this is something that gets you fired up or you’re someone who believes in respectful conversation and equal rights for women and men you are very welcome. Hope to see you all there!

Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: The Power of Folk Horror
Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: The Power of Folk Horror
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“The Power of Folk Horror,”** an exploration of an especially creepy subgenre in folklore and film, with Joshua Barton, lecturer in English at Virginia Commonwealth University and scholar of horror. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/arlington-folk-horror](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/arlington-folk-horror) .] What makes a horror film scare really stick with you? Sometimes, it’s not monsters or jump-scares but the eerie feeling that something ancient, something forgotten, is still lurking just under the surface. That’s the heart of folk horror, a subgenre that blends folklore, rural isolation, and rituals gone wrong. It takes the past—the truly forgotten past—and makes it come roaring back to bite us. Venture into the strange and fascinating world of folk horror with Joshua Barton, who has earned a big following among Profs and Pints fans with excellent past talks on cryptids, ghosts, movie monsters, and other things that go bump in the night. We’ll start by digging down to folk horror’s roots in classic British films like *The Wicker Man* and *Witchfinder General*, discussing how these stories introduced us to secretive villages, ominous woods, and old traditions that clash violently with the modern world. We’ll move on to explore how folk horror has reemerged in recent hits like *The Witch,* *Midsommar*, and *Lamb*. What ties them all together? The feeling that history isn’t dead; it’s just been waiting. Beyond the scares, this genre taps into something deeper. Folk horror asks what happens when we lose touch with our roots or when we get too close to them. It reflects fears about identity, nature, belief, and the things we can’t explain. And in an age of environmental anxiety, political division, and cultural upheaval, these stories are more relevant than ever. By the end of the lecture, we’ll see that folk horror goes beyond surface-level eeriness. It’s a mirror for our collective anxieties and a reminder that the past is never as far away as we think. Disaster+Travel+Wilderness First Aid (In-Person) Certification Course
Disaster+Travel+Wilderness First Aid (In-Person) Certification Course
Hands-on learn how to save life & limb, when mired in the wilderness of an urban disaster zone, travel or rural area far from hospital, or natural area miles from an access point, during the critical minutes or hours before ambulance arrival. Come away with actual do-it-yourself care-giving skill and confidence, and 2-year SOLO certification. Counts as WFR Recertification, too. No prerequisites. YOUR SPOT IS NOT RESERVED UNTIL YOU'VE COMPLETELY REGISTERED AT WWW.SOLOWFA.COM \***Spaces are limited. REGISTER: www.solowfa.com or 434.326.4697** Can't make these dates? Check out more course locations and dates on our website. WHO: Open to the general public, adults & teens with solid attention spans. Know your loved ones are safe wherever they are. WHY: Mired in a disaster zone, travel or rural area far from a hospital, or natural area miles from an access point ... accidents, destructive weather, and terrorism happen, and all-too-often members of a group are not capable of dealing with the emergency. This leads to improper care of the patient, and endangers the entire group. Many recreational accidents are preventable, and improper care of trauma can compound even simple injuries. Very few first aid programs actually address the issues of providing emergency care in a setting where 911 is overwhelmed or not immediately reachable. In this course, classroom instruction and Q&A are interwoven with practical work and problem-solving exercises. Hands-on experience - a most powerful learning tool - during scenarios comprise \~50% of class. TIMING: This is a 2-day class, Saturday and Sunday, 8:00am -7pm each day. Fee: $295 (Earlybird)

Brunch and Discussion!
Join us for brunch and Freethinker discussion! We will meet at Caboose Commons at 11am (in the upstairs area of the building) to munch and chat. We'll organize into a handful of separate tables with 6-8 people at each table. Each person will write down ideas, drop 'em in a hat, and each group will pick 'em out at random to determine our topic(s). We'd love to mix the "louder" and "quieter" voices so that everyone has a chance to weigh in—we want to hear all perspectives! :) We're a very friendly bunch, and welcome participation from newbies and old-bies alike! Come with your best ideas—anything goes. Feel free to post interesting articles, videos or thoughts in the comments section beforehand to inspire our discussion. PLEASE NOTE: We have placed a cap on the event, so if your plans change, please adjust your RSVP, so someone on the Wait List can attend.
